Sorry-icky question on bm’s-Can I ask you all to weigh in on poop changes while on solids. Since I know we all have to be extra careful watching for blood, mucous, and loose stools while trying solids-it can be confusing. Ian’s been on pears for 4 days now as well as squash, sweet potato, banana. Seemingly tolerating everything fine-no rashes, sleeping and playing well, no gas, etc. He has been more constipated but we’ve been using MoM which helps. Still only going once a day and it tends to be mushy with a big hard piece somewhere in it. What I can’t tell is he has what looks like swirls of white (very tiny and thin) mixed in some parts of his poo last couple of days. Is that mucous? If yes, should I worry if he’s fine otherwise? Could it be from a food or have some of you experienced mucous from constipation irritation? Maybe bring a sample into doctor? We should have our fiber juice mailed today. Do pears do this?
We just had such good news yesterday too! Went to allergist for follow up and she was thrilled on Ian’s progress. He also had prick tests for more foods (including milk and soy) and all was negative!
Just wondering what I should do-stop pears? Or is this a reaction that’s been building from sweet potato trial last week?? Soooo many questions. Oh, and also, the poo he did yesterday didn’t have this white stuff but day before it did. And DH says it’s more yellow than white-but I disagree. It’s just not the traditional jelly kind of mucous (apologies).
Thanks.

adjusting to the new foods. IMO I wouldn’t worry about it unless he has
other issues. If you are concerned it couldn’t hurt to bring a dirty
diaper to the doctor but maybe wait a couple of days to see if it
continues?Excellent news with the allergist – yea for the negative tests!!! Is he
going to stay on Elecare or try a slow transition to something else
soon?May 31, 2006 at 8:33 am #8836AnonymousInactiveThanks Karen. I’m wondering if it’s from constipation problems-have you ever seen that? He was backed up pretty bad. Also, curious about MoM? Maybe contributing?
Allergist said no milk until 1 year old and even then we’ll do some patch testing first. She wants to rule out delayed reactions since that seems to be his thing. But another good bit of news-he’s been tolerating probiotic VSL3 (made from dairy) for 3 days now! He used to cry and sneeze immediately after and now nothing. Also, I don’t think that has to do with the mucous since it started prior to probiotic. Soo seemingly things are going well but of course, now this weird poop concern. NEVER is simple!

May 31, 2006 at 9:02 am #8837AnonymousInactiveMarisa has had pebble poops in the past with bits of white in them –
never lasted long and we just ignored it because of that. Lately she
has big mushy brown poops – such a nice change! Come to think of it,
maybe the white was around the same time as MoM – can’t remember for
sure – but if the fiber juice works for Ian you won’t need MoM!Great with the probiotic and sounds good with milk. Sounds like he’s doing great!
May 31, 2006 at 9:50 am #8844AnonymousInactiveAlso, I’m wondering if the white you are seeing could be the rest of the virus leaving his body?
May 31, 2006 at 10:14 am #8849AnonymousInactiveThat’s so funny that you say that about the virus-I was just wondering if maybe he picked something up at the playground yesterday-grandma took him. She’s great but not dilligent about hand washing him afterwards…he also was grunting at me this morning.
How much juice did you start with again? Hopefully it will come today.
Yes we feel so encouraged by his progress. He’s doing wonderfully. Sounds like Marisa is as well!

May 31, 2006 at 10:18 am #8850AnonymousInactiveWe started with 4 ounces/day (undiluted) but Marisa was already
drinking regular juice before that. Maybe start with 2 in Ian’s case? I
mix her morning oatmeal with one ounce and then she has 2-3 ounce more
in straw cup throughout the day.Fingers crossed – so far so good. Terrified to try formula switch soon but…
May 31, 2006 at 2:19 pm #8860AnonymousInactiveFiber juice is here! I’m going to try 2oz in sippy cup. Sometimes he’ll drink from one, sometimes not but I’ll give it a go. Wonder if it could be mixed with formula?

May 31, 2006 at 2:25 pm #8864AnonymousInactiveNot sure – might be pretty gross mixed? If not you can give it from a bottle – even a Dr. Brown 4 ounce bottle…
May 31, 2006 at 3:42 pm #8875AnonymousInactiveI would probably not worry too much about the muccous as Isaac has it all of the time and the ped said it is normal.
May 31, 2006 at 4:14 pm #8896AnonymousInactiveThanks Sarah. We just spoke with GI who said the same thing. Not to worry-it’s quite common, if he was having other signs like diarrhea or vomiting or irritability, it’d be different. So we’re ok.

May 31, 2006 at 7:54 pm #8903AnonymousInactiveGlad all is ok. The mucous that Tyler used to have used to be the entire poo. You could have (not that I would) picked it up and stretched the whole poo out like a bit of elastic (yuk I know). Thankfully we havent seen the mucous in a long time, once he was eating a large amount of solids it just went away. Hope Ian continues to do well with his solids!
May 31, 2006 at 9:26 pm #8919AnonymousInactiveTracy – did he drink the juice?
It really does work – Marisa had 4.5-5 ounces today (DH overidid it)
and she had 3 mushy poops! Of course all her oatmeal, fruits and
veggies played a large part in that too. In general, for us, 3-4 ounces
seems to be perfect.June 1, 2006 at 3:49 pm #8953AnonymousInactiveNo-refusing sippy cup last 2 days so we’re going to mix it in banana. That’s probably contradicting it but not on grains…yet. He had another poo with some mucus but funny-mucous is only in one area of the stool (sorry tmi). Wonder if that means anything? I definitely think he has another bug-fever -low grade- and some sneezing/coughing. But good spirits just needy and get’s over stimulated easy…oh and sleeping alot. Maybe its still hanging around..

June 1, 2006 at 4:19 pm #8956AnonymousInactiveMaybe still bug from last time? So hard to tell with them! IMO let him
sleep as much as he can/needs and as much fluids as possible. BTW –
will he drink from an open cup? When M used to refuse the sippy she’d
often happily sip from an open cup. Messy but worked. Hoep he feels
better soon! -
