My son is on prevacid and that seemed to have helped with the crying and fussing after feedings. He is breastfed and I am on the TED diet. I am on day 7 of this diet. But we are still dealing with extreme fussiness and gas. He looks like he is in so much pain when he is pooping. He arches and is contantly grunting. We send his stool samples to be analyzed but haven’t received the results yet.
The doctor suggested that we switch him to Alimentum and give it about 2 weeks to owrk. Meanwhile he wants me to keep pumping in case my son doesn’t really have MSPI and he can go back to breast milk.I also noticed that Gavin is constipated today. He is trying so hard to poop. Could it be all the rice I have been eating on the TED diet.ThanksJanuary 14, 2008 at 2:20 pm #47334AnonymousInactiveWhy does the doc. want you to switch to the Alimentum? If you are on the TED, I would think your breastmilk would be “purer” than the Alimentum (which does contain milk). Just wondering… How old is your son? Ben had those symptoms until he was about 4 months old, and for him, it was (I think) a mixture of an immature digestive system and the reflux. Once he hit that 4 month mark, he was much more comfortable, and the gas subsided.
when he does poop is it hard? Ben would often seem to strain to poop but it would come out looking totally normal.As for the rice… it is possible. I guess you could go a couple of days without it just to see what happens.What form of Prevacid and what dose?January 14, 2008 at 2:58 pm #47336AnonymousInactiveMy son is almost 4 weeks old. He is on 15mg prevacid solutabs once a day. He weighs about 10lbs. He was born 7lbs 7oz. The stool test came back today negative for blood. The doc still wants me to try alimentum for two weeks. I haven’t switched my son to formula yet and probably won’t until I see how the TED works. Does not having blood in his stool mean that he doesn’t have MSPI?

ok, here goes as best as I can, fast, lol1) I don’t like your doctor- this sounds blunt- but really HE should try pumping! anyway you are making your milk to be equivalent to alumentum so personally i would just forget going to formula & keep on making your milk free of milk & soy proteins. actually alimentum HAS milk proteins, it’s just very very broken down. so, your milk will be FREE of milk & soy- harumph to you great doctor!!!(if I am offending you I am so so sorry! I’m just going off bcse that’s why I’m still here- to help people whose doctors tell them things that there are other solutions to)2) even if there was blood in the stool, it doesn’t mean it couldn’t be ‘solved’ while you are breastfeeding. no blood does not equal to no MSPI. congrats on no blood! are you seeing any difference in baby’s stools now that you’re on day 7 of the TED?3) there is a difference b/t allergy & intolerance- go to the ‘main’ mspi forum- click on MSPI & allergy info’ and then go to page 2 to read an EXCELLENT article that tells the difference b/t the 2. thre’s a list of symptoms, etc- this should really help you a lot4) also from the ‘main’ MSPI page is a link to look for called ‘Misconceptions about elemental formulas’ this will also helo you a lot5) because rice binds you doens’t mean it’s going to bind the baby, meaning that the poop issue might be MSPI- it can be a symptom, you’re right- refer to article I mentioned about allergies/intolerances- anyway it might be the rice, but it would be rice ‘protein’ that is affecting baby, not the fiber, etc that affects you as you eat it…so, if at the end of the TED you still think its something in your diet, then I would say to cut out the rice- there have definitely been mamas who noticed their los reacted to the rice they ate6)1) what is the biological/physical/scientific explanation for the
> connection between food
> allergies and reflux?The body has difficulty digesting or tolerating the food for whatever
reason, so it is essentially treated the same way the body would treat
a non-food substance or poison – back up the way it came so that it
can’t affect the rest of the digestive system.> 2) what’s the connection between gas and reflux?
Gas is created when something isn’t digested properly; for example,
beans are generally harder to digest than other foods, which is why
they are notorious for causing gas in most people (they are generally
not a common problem with breastfed babies through mom’s milk, though;
this is just a common example to help make sense.)Also, gas puts pressure on the esophageal sphincter (the muscle at the
top of the stomach that helps move and keep things down), making it
easier for whatever is in the stomach to be refluxed.7) I would really try to figure out how to split that prevacid up into 2 doses- a pill cutter or just take the crumbled powder mess and divide it up, it doesn’t have to be exactly equal in fact I always gave a higher portion of the day’s dose at night so I could get baby to sleeeep8) it takes a good 2 weeks so you’re halfway there! keep going mama!January 14, 2008 at 9:13 pm #47354AnonymousInactiveJust wanted to say that I agree with the others — if your little guy has protein intolerances, the TED should show a big improvement — you don’t need to try Alimentum to show this. My son’s dr (well, the first one he had) suggested the same thing to me, but I HATE to pump and refused to try it because after all, I had started the TED and knew it was as “pure” as you can go, basically. And I was scared to death that my milk supply would dry up.
If I were you, I’d finish out the full 2 weeks on TED (hey, you’ve come this far — congrats!) just like you are, then maybe try to cut out the rice for a few days if you like. If that doesn’t work, I’d say to try to increase the Prevacid dose. I may be wrong, but I think that whatever symptoms are leftover after doing the TED should be helped by medication.Good luck!! Hang in there — it’s gonna get better SOON!!! -
