Eric- Zegerid is Omep + Bicarb.
Omep ( or Name brand Prilosec) is just Omep.
That is what makes Zegerid great for our LOs. It has the buffer in it already! So far so good over here,, we are on day 10 of OTC Zegerid. Fingers crossed..:)
November 28, 2011 at 3:45 pm #69470AnonymousInactiveI was looking into getting some Zegrid OTC the other day and when I read the bottle on how to take the med, it said to take on an empty stomach and wait up to one hour before eating! Why? I thought this was the stuff you didn’t have to time with food.
November 28, 2011 at 4:01 pm #69471hellbenntKeymasterStoneycypher- you do NOT have to time around meals!
this is what everyone loves about it!you are making your own compound- this is a liquid that you are making- this is why you’re adding the 19 mls of mylanta cherry supreme (find the cvs brand- it’s the one with no aluminum in it) & the zegerid has some bicarbonate in it. This w/ the mylanta cherry supreme makes it ok to give at any timeNovember 28, 2011 at 6:58 pm #69473AnonymousInactiveluckyjill22 wrote: Eric- Zegerid is Omep + Bicarb.

Glad to hear you are seeing positive results. I sincerely hope it continues for you. Which cocktail did you use:
(1) 20mg Zegerid Capsule
plus (1) 20mg omeprazole [prilosec]
capsule plus 19ml Mylanta Cherry Supreme, or(2) 20mg Zegerid Capsule
plus 19ml Mylanta Cherry Supreme? How old is your LO? How many mls are you giving her at one sitting? And how are you administering it?
Our LO is 3 days shy of 4 weeks and hates taking the prilosec compound (2mg/ml omeprazole and 8.4% sodium bicarbonate). She screams at first taste until it is over. This makes it very difficult to give her as we have to be very careful she doesn’t inhale it down her lungs which causes some of it to drip out her mouth. We are currently giving her 2.5 mls a sitting and can only give it in 0.3 ml increments so she doesn’t inhale it. My wife and I have to emotionally gear up before giving it to her by reminding ourselves it would be worse without the medication. And then feel like we need a nap when it is all over.
Sometimes she will take it in the bottle but not most of the time. Even 35mls of breast milk does not mask the bitter taste.
November 28, 2011 at 8:29 pm #69474hellbenntKeymasterEric:you can try it w/ mylanta or tums or even a natural calcium carbonate- I it’s copied & pasted on page 1 of this thread-also, Dr. P says you can add splenda…I’m not sure what I even think about that option? I don’t know anything about it, but, I DO know that there’s aspertame in prevacid solutabs and that’s given to infants…anyway, before going that route I’d try, in this order (this is just ME- I’ve never even done any of this before, so I’m just being ME here, lol!):mylanta cherry supreme (cvs brand)pure Calcium Carbonate powder using the exact brand name listed in the hyperlink because it’s been tested to be lead free [I suppose I’d take their word on this..].Tums QuikPackYou would use the NOW brand calcium carbonate powder or the tums in place of the Mylanta Cherry Supreme; then add enough water to make 19mL total volume.found this:Tums is an excellent alternative as it does not contain magnesium hydroxide (that is what causes gas and loose stools)Also: To help with excess gas from the buffering in Zegerid you can add Mylicon drops in the mixture and some in the bottle.录 tsp. of CC powder = ~750mg of calcium carbonate路 1 extra strength TUMS or 1 TUMS QuikPac = 1000mg of calcium carbonate
路 1 TUMS Kids Smoothies (contains wheat & dairy) = 750mg of calcium carbonate but often have a better flavor for LOs.
STILL waiting to find out if you need to give 7ml doses…here’s cvs brand Antacid Liquid Cherry Supreme:Ingredients:Per Teaspoon (5mL): Calcium Carbonate 400 mg; Magnesium Hydroxide 135 mgso use these ingredients/measurements as a rule of thumb for the tums, too 馃檪路 录 tsp. of CC powder = ~750mg of calcium carbonate
路 1 extra strength TUMS or 1 TUMS QuikPac = 1000mg of calcium carbonate

November 28, 2011 at 10:06 pm #69476AnonymousInactiveEric- My girl is almost 6 months (20lbs)and has silent reflux too, and we give her the first option (OTC Zegerid and Omep). We give her 3.5 mls per sitting (3 times a day). (As per Dr.P and Marci-Kids dosing.) She HATED the taste thru the syringe, so we decided to put it in with 3oz of formula and she didn’t even notice! Has been working great so far. We do add some mylicon drops for gas in the bottles.
Not sure how long your LO has been on her med, but i know they say it takes time for it to kick in. Hang in there! Congrats on your baby! 馃檪
December 2, 2011 at 10:56 pm #69498AnonymousInactiveI was wanting to switch from MCS to CC powder..(DD has SUPER loose stools). Anyone use CC powder with OTC Zegerid?? Wasn’t sure if I should follow the rules for RX Zegerid. I could not find any info on mixing CC powder with OTC Zegerid. Thoughts??
December 3, 2011 at 12:08 pm #69501hellbenntKeymasterYou can be our experimenter
but I did copy & paste a conversion chart (2 posts above) – I think it’ll work-I think I saw from Dr P you could use tums w/ otc, so why not the CCDecember 7, 2011 at 11:48 am #69515AnonymousInactiveNot to belabor the issue, but since gas has been an issue for us – if we were to use the Tums quikpak with OTC, we would combine
1 20mg prilosec OTC
1 20mg zegerid OTC
1 tums quik pack + 19 ml of water?
how much water to put in OTC mixture with tums quik pak, or tums smoothie?
sorry if this was already answered, this is just so confusing.
Thanks!
December 7, 2011 at 8:52 pm #69523hellbenntKeymasterI *think* I’ve ‘got’ it?!!!!!!!!!!!I just got the following from Dr P:(1) otc zegerid capsule + (1) otc omperazole capsule + 19mls mcs, mixed at a concentration of 2 mg/ml.3.5mL is the minimum volume to give each dose.Dr P also says: “19 mls is plenty, but 13mL and the remainder in water is fine too.”I posted to ask if this means 13mL of mcs & 6mL of water (I think that’s what he meant?)Ok, straight from Dr P, regarding OTC Zegerid capsules: (1) otc zegerid capsule + (1) otc omperazole capsule + 19mls mylanta cherry supreme [mcs], mixed at a concentration of 2 mg/ml.He then said: “19 mls [of mcs] is plenty, but 13mL [of mcs]& the remainder in water is fine too.”Then, I said the following & he agreed: Basically you use enough calcium carbonate in whatever form (mcs, tums, cc powder [NOW brand]) to equal 1,000-1,500 mgs of calcium carbonate and add enough water to make it 19mLs. This makes a concentration of 2 mg/ml and 3.5mL is the minimum volume to give each dose.I am now adding (to keep everything all together): “Shake & refrigerate; good for one week. To help w/ excess gas, from the buffering in Zegerid, you can add Mylicon drops in the mixture & some in the bottle.” Also adding that some have had success w/ Little Tummies Gas drops (right??). whew! I think we’ve got itThe cvs version of mcs has, Per Teaspoon (5mL): Calcium Carbonate 400 mgso: 13mLs of cvs brand mcs has approx ~ 1,000mgs of calcium carbonateso you find the equivalent amount of calcium carbonate and add enough water to make it 19mLs…路 录 tsp. of CC powder = ~750mg of calcium carbonate
路 1 extra strength TUMS or 1 TUMS QuikPac = 1000mg of calcium carbonate
路 1 TUMS Kids Smoothies (contains wheat & dairy) = 750mg of calcium carbonate but often have a better flavor for LOs. [not even sure these are still on the market?]

December 10, 2011 at 10:23 pm #69544AnonymousInactiveHi
I’m new to post here but have been reading a lot here and finally registered. I have a little 24 weaker girl, not as little anymore though. Sophia was born in march 2011 weighed 15 oz. She is 9 months actual/ almost 6 adjusted. Doing well except for severe acid reflux. We’ve try all the formulas out there and she’s been on prevacid solutab 7.5 mg twice a day for the past 4 months. It never really helped but we’ve been hoping it will and her GI won’t prescribe zegerid:( thank you all I found this thread and bought OTC zegerid and omeprazole (CVS brand) the only one I found in capsules. Came to find out inside this capsule are granules and a pill. Do I crush the pill? And do granules dissolve in the solution? If anybody uses this combo, I would appreciate you share your experience. Thanks in advance!
December 11, 2011 at 2:07 pm #69548hellbenntKeymasterdon’t crush anything! you throw the tablet out & use the ‘beads’
I’m pretty sure somewhere that it’s the beads that have the med-
ok here it is:hellbennt2011-12-13 13:18:34
December 13, 2011 at 11:33 am #69551AnonymousInactiveThank you so much for clearing it for me! This site is very helpful. I’ve been giving her zegerid/omeprazole OTC with mylanta, we switched from 15 mg solutab a day. Giving her 3.5 ml 3 times a day. She is 12.5 lb. is it enough? She’s been the same, no improvement yet, but its only been 3 days. How do I spread three doses? Do I still have to give the last one not later than 530?
December 13, 2011 at 1:31 pm #69552hellbenntKeymasterthe concentration is 2 mg/ml
so 3.5mls = 7mgs7 x 3 = 21mgsyou can dose later than 5:30-first thing in a.m. then middle of day then eveningDecember 13, 2011 at 6:51 pm #69553AnonymousInactiveThank you so much! My poor baby has been suffering for 4 months now. Being a micropreemie she’s been through a lot and now this. Strangely they never diagnosed her in a nicu and she hasn’t had any episodes there. This all began when she came home. I hate acid reflux. I can’t see her suffering any longer and not being happy and developing like other babies do. I hope zegerid at the right dose will do the trick and my baby will be happy. She is my third and my first encounter with acid reflux. She is also on erythromycin which def works for her motility because she doesn’t vomit whole feed 2 hrs later. But she is still in pain from burning and refusing the bottle. Hope we can avoid the Gtube and nissen in a near future. Sorry, just needed to vent. You guys are great and I learned a lot from the forums here. Thanks for your help. Day three on new med., so far no results or I would say she is doing more of coughing and swallowing 馃檨 but I stay positive. When she started on solutab I was told two weeks to see the result. We never did maybe a little relief but not a different baby who started eating. Is it this long when you switch to different PPI too? Anybody who has experience please share. Thank you
