I was just wondering for those of you using Miralax OTC, what dose is safe for an infant with constipation? Does it come in a powder or liquid form? My daughter Lauren is only 8 weeks old and MoM works well for her but our GI is very against using it everyday at this age so I wonder if Miralax would be ok? She does not poop unless we use a thermometer or babylax or MoM so we have to find something. Also, we’re using Simply Thick (which I know is a fiber) but instead of helping her go, it actually makes her poops quite gummy (sorry) and harder to pass. I think it gives her a little gas too but she won’t eat without it so you pick your battles right?
Thank you!!

We’ve had to adjust the dose and have found that for Hailey, we need to use almost the full adult dose to get results. It’s powder and it dissolves pretty well though. I would call the miralax help line and ask them how much to give. It works well for Hailey. Another thing that helped a fair bit was benefiber. It’s safe for infants and helps to bulk up the poop. Sorry to hear that she’s having trouble. Constipation can be terrible.

We were told we could use 1/2 tsp to 1.5 tsp a day (he is almost 20 lbs) and we’d need to play around with the dosage until we got it right. 1.5 tsp gave him the runs and 1/2 tsp wasn’t enough, so we landen on 1 tsp per day. They say it is very safe and it’s even used in the NICU at our local hospital. You could always run it by your ped GI, but maybe start small, with 1/2 tsp or less and see if that works. I’m not sure what weight your baby is. I hope the constipation gets under control soon. It can really aggravate Landen’s reflux.
HTH!September 29, 2007 at 10:39 am #43487AnonymousInactiveThanks guys. Lauren is now almost 12 pounds! Do you put the miralax in a bottle or with water? Can I mix it in the formula?
September 29, 2007 at 11:37 am #43490AnonymousInactiveNo problem!
You can mix it in any hot or cold liquid. I put it in one of Landen’s Neocate bottles each day. I would think water would be fine too.September 30, 2007 at 2:27 pm #43540AnonymousInactiveDefinitely fine in the bottle… but we use the OTC powder, not the liquid which I think is a prescription. I’m not sure what the difference is.

November 29, 2007 at 10:51 pm #45934AnonymousInactiveAnother Miralax question or two… We just started Ella on it and she pooed today for the first time in a few weeks without the help of a suppository. Anyone have any idea of how long we’ll have to keep her on it and when we can start decreasing the dose? Thanks for any help
December 1, 2007 at 3:44 pm #45993AnonymousInactiveHmmmm… hard to say.. my daughter is 4 and still needs it! Many parents find, however, that once the reflux is resolved and the child is off meds, the constipation tends to subside as well.
