I am going to the Dr. office tomorrow prepared with the MarciKIDS printout, and I am going to ask for a PPI because tomorrow will make 14 days on Zantac with very little improvement.

However, I have read and reread everything about PPIs that I could find and I am totally confused.

It appears that MarciKIDS recommends the Zegerid powder for oral suspension, especially for tiny babies.

However, I have noticed that many of you use the Prevacid solutabs and there are notes about “if Zegerid can work for your child.” Does it not work for specific types of children (ex. MSPI, etc.)? I can’t find any information on who this does not work for. Are there other reasons why people choose not to use Zegerid?

Also, there were notes about using Chocobase. This isn’t used for Zegerid, right?

Do I mix the Zegerid or do I have the pharmacy do it?

I am so confused! I should probably just not worry about it and let the Dr. figure it out, but I want to go in prepared with exactly what I want because I have not had good luck.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Let me see if I can help. I think that Zegerid is an unfamiliar med for some of the docs and the prevacid solutabs are so well known that many docs just prescribe that. The zegerid is mixed by you (I am not sure how you mix but I think it is with water and mylanta or tums) some of the moms who have used it can tell you better. The solutabs have to be timed with meals (give on empty stomach and follow with a feed/meal 30-60 min later) where as the Zegerid does not so it has its advantages. I hope that helps some. Many babies have success on zegerid and it’s nice b/c you don’t have to time with meals. I wish it would have worked for us for that reason.

I can tell you why it did not work for my MFPI baby. There is sodium bicarbonate in zegerid to keep the meds stable and it caused a lot of gas and discomfort for Landen. It did not matter what mgs we used or what we mixed it with, he still had issues with really bad gas and he suddenly started spitting up the entire dose (vomiting) when he was usually a silent refluxer. Chocobase and Caracream are essentially the “old” zegerid. It also is a flavoring that is milk/soy free with sodium bicarbonate to make prevacid capsules or prilosec capsules turn into an “immediate release” PPI so it does not have to be timed around meals. Again, many moms have had success with prevacid in chocobase/caracream and many did with zegerid. There are just some babies that are too sensitive to the sodium bicarb.

we loved caracream. there were lots of mspi babies who did well with it…

HELP!

UPDATE: We started the Zegerin (40mg packets. 8mg 2X per day. One part Mylanta added as additional buffer per the MarciKIDS suggestion) on Friday evening. The doctor did not want us to keep using the Zantac. Of course, we are now having more problems with feeding and pain. She seems to be having a terrible time sucking even on the pacifier like she just can’t figure it out. She occasionally did this before but now it is all the time. She also has been screaming bloody murder before and at the beginning of meals. She is arching, grunting, all of that. She also farts and strains during these fits like she is trying to go to the bathroom. Sometimes farting and getting out her stool makes her quiet for a few seconds like she found relief. Is this the reflux getting worse because of not being on Zantac through the transition or is she having a reaction to the Zegerin? My doctor was not familiar with the drug at all so I am not sure that she will know the answer to that. The difference between feeds 3 days ago and feeds today is that she used to get into her screaming fits after at least an ounce of formula and after eating. Now she is having the fits before she even gets going. This last time she settled down half way through and was only fussy when I changed her position. She is screaming now again. She is grunting and straining and farting. I also recently changed her formula to Nutramigen. Yesterday was the first day where she was 100% on Nutramigen. HELP!!!

I would give that baby zantac & I would give the MAXimum dose of zantac for her weight (10mgs per kilo- not lbs)

give it 4hrs seperate from the zegerid

give it for a good 14 days and then back off to see how the zegerid is working all by itself

without zantac, it’s as if your baby isn’t on ANY MEDS AT ALL.

I learned this the HARD way!

when I took baby off of zantac and started a PPI, my poor baby cried/screamed/shrieked/howled so much that he LOST HIS VOICE!

Can they add in a coating agent like Carafate. It is by RX only. IT can be trickly to dose around the PPI but is will be worth it. It’s like super duper strength mylanta. It is meant to coat the esophagus to allow it to heal itself and will in effect lessen the pain form the relfux be cause the throat is coated.
