mashed potato poop?

Does anyone know what a soy formula thickened with oatmeal baby’s poo is supposed to look like? My son is having such a hard time with his bm’s lately and sometimes they look like mashed potatoes followed by clay followed by more mashed potatoes…it’s like he has constipation, then he doesn’t then he does again? It seems a little grainy when it’s not hard like clay and he grunts, strains, cries, screams, etc….when passing any of the above. No mucus no blood..and it’s a light brown or yellowish tan color. Just wondering! I have had to insert a rectal thermometer a couple of times to help him get it out and it’s not hard when it comes out??

I might stop thickening and see what happens?

is he on meds? the meds should stop the pain so even if he is spitting up, it should not hurt him. if he is having trouble gaining weight and that’s why you need the thickening, then I would go to a nutritionist/dietician to find out how to enrich his formula w/ extra calories, etc.

if you are thickening bcse you are worried that he is getting thinner liquid into his lungs (aspiration), then I would ask for a Swallow Study which will tell exactly the mechanics of how he’s swallowing and then if he shows that he does need thickening they will tell you exactly what consistancy (using terms like ‘nectar’ or ‘honey’) and help you get this consistancy w/ thickening agents like Simply Thick or Thick It.

I am thickening because my ped. told me to…if I don’t he chokes on his milk and he also can’t keep it down without me adding cereal to his bottles. I have tried thickeners and they help him to be able to drink the milk without choking but it all just comes right back up …even hours after he ate. He isn’t having any trouble gaining weight and he isn’t on any meds but I have scheduled an appt with another ped. who was recommended by justice’smom on this forum, who hopefully will give him something, because feeding him has become a struggle and he always has something trying to come up, he makes these disgusted faces and swallows it back down all the time. He does still spit up with the thickened feeds but not half as much. He doesn’t usually cry when he spits up, just after he eats. My current ped’s take on it is he will just grow out of it…which I think is ridiculous. I can’t wait to get relief for him.. he doesn’t sleep good at all and I am soooo tired.
