We’ve all been through the trenches, some of us out of them sooner than others. I truly pray for those who are in the midst of this hell, and those who have a long road before them.
I just get so tired of thinking “we’ve outgrown it” just to be kicked in the face again when your life starts to resemble something normal. I swear I come to these boards when my kids are first born and then slowly but surely “wean” our way to normal. And then I come running back going “help me again!! “So here I come again…Cooper has been doing great reflux wise. He has some flare ups when teething, but we’ve gotten to the point where he isn’t on any prevacid at all. We’re still on alimentum after some trial and error.Aside from some ear infections, I thought we were out of the woods.Well, as I always do, I’m second guessing myself. He has been miserable the past few weeks. Went to Dr, he does have yet another ear infection. So we are on day 4 or so of antibiotics. He seems to be more miserable than before! He WILL NOT go to sleep. He would usually go to sleep at night, since he was so pooped from being up all day. But I just got done “rocking” him for what seemed like hours. He would not hold still and just seemed in pain. I had given him motrin earlier… He finally just cried himself to sleep. I know that sounds mean but, I was just about to snap.He keeps bringing his hands to his mouth, but not to chew on just kind of blocks his mouth. This is all while screaming. The other thing I’ve noticed is he is wanting bottles more and the amount is never enough. If it was just teething, wouldn’t drinking a bottle be bothersome? This is why I’m questioning reflux. But as my DH points out, he is fine once he is being walked around, etc…Sorry for the rant, I just am so sick of all the variables with this cr*p.tinaNovember 26, 2007 at 12:04 am #45771AnonymousInactiveCould he be in pain from the ear infection? I would call the doc for them to recheck. Wonder if the meds are clearing it up?
Hope things get better soon.November 26, 2007 at 3:51 am #45773AnonymousInactiveSorry to hear it! Alana never had any trouble with a bottle when she was teething so I wouldn’t rule that out. Interestingly she did have trouble when she had ear infections. Why don’t these kids come with a manual! I would probably use motrin round the clock for the time you are giving the antibiotics and if at the end of it the ears are cleared and things are still the same I would probably try the meds again (I wouldn’t have wanted to hear this gem of advice either !). I hope he gets better and you get relief soon.
November 26, 2007 at 8:17 am #45776AnonymousInactiveI’m not sure how old he is or how long he has been off the prevacid, but antibiotics can make reflux worse. My lo who we thought had outgrown reflux and taken off meds would still have flare ups here and there. I could do some mylanta for him and he was fine. You could try that and also Hylands has some earache tablets that worked wonders for us. You may have to give more than the pkg says, but I was advised you could give the whole thing and they would be fine. Not that you would want to do that though. Also for the ear infections the chiropractor works wonders too. I hope things are better soon.
November 26, 2007 at 10:36 am #45779AnonymousInactiveThanks ladies. The dr prescribed a new antibiotic, a stronger one I think, so maybe it is harder on his tummy.
We have been doing motrin to the point where I went and bought the huge 4 pack from sams…I may call Dr and ask if this anitbiotic has any bothersome side effects…TinaNovember 26, 2007 at 2:41 pm #45786AnonymousInactiveHey Tina… we’ve been through the ear infection nightmare too, and my son would always gnaw on his hands too. I’m not sure why, but maybe it was like massaging that area or something. We got to the point that the antibiotics stopped working, and he just got tubes last week. Also, his reflux did seem to flare during the infections, probably from the antibiotic tummy upset. If he’s on Omnicef, that one really was tough on Ben.
If he doesn’t seem to be getting better after another day or so on the antibiotic, you may want to take him back in to make sure it’s actually working to clear the infection. Also, you can ask the doctor to prescribe some ear numbing drops to help with the pain. These were really helpful in getting my son to sleep during the infections. Also, while Motrin seemed to work better on his pain, it is actually a little rough on their tummies too. I tried to stick to Tylenol unless I was really desperate.Bensmama2007-11-26 14:43:49
November 26, 2007 at 8:21 pm #45801AnonymousInactiveHe was originally prescribed Omnicef, but when I nearly fainted at the cost, the pharmacy called for me to get an alternative. I’m guessing it’s something similar…
I would do tylenol, but the corn syrup in it really bothers him. One or two doses is fine, but when it is continual like lately, it really starts to bug him. Motrin doesn’t have any in it. Ugg!!!Numbing drops would be a lifesaver!! I will call to rant about that too…Does anyone know how much Mylanta a 22# ish baby would get??Thanks again!TinaNovember 26, 2007 at 8:46 pm #45803AnonymousInactiveAt that age I would do approx. 3 – 4 mls a few times a day if necessary.
Sorry Cooper is giving you trouble!!!!Ann MarieNovember 26, 2007 at 9:19 pm #45805AnonymousInactivethanks, he just woke up crying and I gave him 4 ml and he seemed to calm down some, still not great though….
November 27, 2007 at 4:22 am #45807AnonymousInactiveAlana doesn’t do so well with ibuprofen…in terms of her tummy…but if I give it with food it has much less of an impact. Can you get over the counter zantac in the US? Or whats the other one everyone was talking about awhile back…Pepcid? and see if that helps rather than the mylanta?
November 27, 2007 at 10:14 am #45813AnonymousInactiveAntibiotics hit Hailey’s tummy hard too. Can you try a probiotic? Hope it passes soon…
