Brielle had really bad reflux in the beginning and around 6 months it settled down a little so that she wasnt projectile vomiting at every meal and constantly expereiencing Sandiffer symptoms. She will be 9 months tomorrow and about a week and a hald ago the vomiting started back up. Now its after every meal again and at night she is having episodes of sandifer symptoms again.
Her 9 month wellness is Friday and I just called her ped about it. They dont think she can really have much more as far as medication. She is probably just over 17 pounds and is currently on 7.5 mg of prevacid solutab 3x per day.
I also give her 2ml of mylant before bed time and naps to try and alleviate some pain.
What else can I do for her?!
June 27, 2007 at 12:43 pm #38103AnonymousInactiveBrielle,
Is she taking a lot of solids at this point? I’m just wondering if it’s possible that she has some intolerances and the solids are intensifying that since she’s taking it in directly as opposed to getting the proteins from breastmilk?
This is just a thought that comes to mind, but I know how hard it can be to detect what specifically is bothering them. I have still not figured out any one food or particular protein, etc. that bothers Caden.
The weird thing about Caden is that his reflux flare ups have no particular pattern that I can decern or any relation to any foods he has eaten, etc. I could be wrong, but I have really tried to analyze his behavior, mood, etc. after eating certain things and have never seen a correlation. So, I am not one to give answers on this, but I just keep thinking that it’s possible that certain foods irritate them or cause indigestion due to an intolerance.
I hope you figure it out soon! I know how hard it can be. Caden is thankfully through with most of it and not on any meds, but boy when he has an episode, I really know it. When he had his ear infection recently, I smelled acid on his breath again, and I haven’t smelled that in a long time. Apparently illness can cause it to resurface. His seems to have subsided again – at least for now.
It’s good to hear from you again – I have been wondering how Brielle has been doing.
Take care
June 27, 2007 at 1:42 pm #38108AnonymousInactiveWe are giving Pepcid Complete at bedtime now (1/2 tablet) instead of Mylanta and it has helped tons. It has the same ingredients as Mylanta but also has an acid reducer for breakthroughs. Seth can chew the tablet but I think some do dissolve it in water before giving but not sure. There has been a lot of threads on here about it lately if you want to search. Good luck and sorry she is having flare ups again.

Brielle has been taking solids since she was 5 months old and been on graduates since she was 7 months. Other than tomatos, we also cant find what seems to flare her up. It just seems to come out of no where but for the most part, we have been able to treat flair ups with mylanta. Not this time 🙁
As for using something other than mylanta, how would I know how much to give her?
June 27, 2007 at 4:20 pm #38126AnonymousInactiveFor the Pepcid Complete, You can e-mail Dr. Phillips at Marci Kids and see what he says. He told me 1/2 a tablet and I confirmed it with the GI.
June 27, 2007 at 4:44 pm #38128AnonymousInactiveYes, I was told 1/2 tablet of Pepcid Complete dissolved in water. I used it with Caden awhile back, and it seemed to help him. Mylanta never did anything for us.
Good luck
June 27, 2007 at 8:45 pm #38150AnonymousInactiveEmily’s post makes me wonder… do you you think that Brielle could have something else going on??? Ear infections are running rampant lately, and that can certainly make the reflux flare and the puke rain forth. Maybe her pediatrician will catch something during her check-up.
June 27, 2007 at 9:58 pm #38162AnonymousInactiveShe has been shaking her head no alot lately and ear infections can cause that but its also a common phase at her age. I was really thinking she has outgrown her dose and after tonight Im even more convinced of that
My MIL baby sat her tonight for a couple of hours. I told her to break her 15mg prevacid solutab in half and give half to Brielle. Well, she miunderstood, broke the tablet in half but gave her the whole thing End result was, no projectile vomiting, no vomiting at all after dinner. Im going to see how she sleeps tonight, then give her the correct dose tomorrow and see what happens. That way I can report my findings to her Ped.
June 28, 2007 at 1:06 am #38173AnonymousInactivemaybe the stronger dose is a bit better?
June 28, 2007 at 10:31 am #38191AnonymousInactiveThats what Im thinking but her ped said the 7.5 mg of prevacid is the max dose?
June 28, 2007 at 10:42 am #38192AnonymousInactivelifeuntome,
That does sound suspicious. I wonder if she needs a higher dose. You’ll have to see how she does today on the lower dose again. I always wondered if Caden would have improved if we could have tried Zegerid or at least gotten solutabs. Our ped would only prescribe H2blockers or Prevacid granules, so we were never sure we timed them correctly on an empty stomach, etc. since he breastfeeds.
Good luck!
