I bought Cooper some of the sweet potato puffs to try when we start finger foods since he likes sweet potatoes so much. But the first ingredient is rice flour! And from experience I know that the protein in rice mimics the protein in milk and we have MSPI, now my question is is rice flour okay? The puffs don’t really have any measureable protein per the food lable so I couldn’t think it is too much, but I am afraid to have a reaction. Anyone got any advice/experience.

i do not agree with the saying that rice protein mimics milk protein. the problem with rice is that it is a grain, and grains are EXTREMELY hard for kids under 1-2 years of age to digest. babies lack an enzyme called amalyse to digest grains. i did not give my son any prepackaged snacks like that for a few reasons, one being that a lot of them have ingredients in them that i wasnt too fond of. there are a few alternatives, like these organic corn puffs i give my son. he likes the peanut butter flavor best, and yes i started it around 6 months because we do not have any peanut allergies in the family. that was just a personal choice.

I hadn’t heard that rice flour mimics the milk protein. Kaelyn has done really well with things made of rice despite the fact that she’s allergic to milk, so I’d say go for it.

Cooper and Evie appear to be 11 days apart, and it looks like were are on the same track regarding solids. Evie did poorly on rice and is great on the oatmeal, so I had the same worries about the sweet potato puffs also. However, they have been working fine. She does not have her pincer grasp mastered, nor does she know how to chew really. I don’t think she’s that interested in them. I’ve fed her a few everyday and there’s been no reaction. I think I’m giving them to her b/c it’s fun for me to watch.

I would classify Sarah’s MSPI as mild (never any rashes or mucousy diapers, just really cranky on milk based formula) That being said, she did great with puffs. Eventually I found out she handled hidden dairy well too…and then we finally made it to milk. Good luck!
