My little Kasi was put on Zantac at 3 weeks. She never really spit up a lot but was very fussy and only took 15 -20 min naps during the day. She sleeps on average 6 to 8 hours at night 90% of the time (even when she wasn’t napping well). We kept her on the Zantac for 4 weeks and last Saturday took her off to see if she really needed it. She is back to her short naps and being fussy because she is so tired. She also wants to eat more often.
Help I am not sure what to think. My doctor says that I should have been able to tell the 1st day of her being off the Zantac – but it took about a week for me to see the pattern.
Feedback please.

and are “happy” spitters – theres no discomfort with the spitting up, and
then theres others that spit up and are uncomfortable. So your daughter
could be a “silent” refluxer? If that were the case, I disagree with your
doctor, meds can heal residual damage done by acid getting into the
esoph. and it is possible that it would take a week or so for the acid to
start causing discomfort again if you know what I mean.
Something to think about atleast. ..
Does she arch her back at all?

Poor sleep could be a sign of reflux — it sounds like it may be silent reflux as she does not seem to spit up and the Zantac is helping. Also, comfort feeding may be a sign that the acid coming up from the stomach is bothering her esophagus and she wants to eat to ease the pain — most babies with reflux either eat a ton or donĀ“t eat at all.
As for what your ped said, well i think it may depend on the level of acidity in her stomach adn also of how often the food is coming back up. Ie it may take as little as one bottle for a baby to feel uncomfortable if the acidity is extremely high and refluxes 15 times after that bottle. In other cases, if the acid is lower, and baby refluxes less, then maybe it takes some time for the esophagus to get irritated… i am not a doctor, but i think this is possible

Alot of babies are comfort eaters. Ally certainly was, she wanted to eat every hour and it made things WAY worse. She was never much of a spitter when she was young, and that’s worse in a way because they’re getting burned by acid on the way up an on the way back down. If it were my child, I’d go back on the Zantac.
