hi! I am Michelle and i have four month old twins that were born 9weeks early. I have NO idea what is going on with them and it is beyond frustrating. They are breastfed, with occasional bottkes of.formula (mostly b/c i get touched out and need a break). They spit up all the time. Immediately after eating and hours afterward. They would nurse.all the time if i let them. They are fussy whenever they are not eating or being held. Day, night doesn’t matter. They are infrequent poopers (every 8-9days) and the poop is.weird. very thick like peanut butter, greenish and stinky. It.is.not.constipation.. i can’t tell.if there is mucous.or blood, but i gave a dipe to the ped.the.other day. He is.going.to.refer us to.a gi, but who knows how long that will take.
I was.working with a lactation.consultant to nail it down.and we were thinking maybe oversupply (usually that results in frequent pooping not the opposite). I have been off dairy for 6weeks and maybe they have been slightly.less.grumpy, but nothing that has made a big difference. I had theped call ina rx for zantac and that may have also helped slightly, but not anything definite. Somefimes.their spitting seems uncomfortable and.other times.not.really. they are gaining.okay….They both gained a.pound in.a.month (they are 9#7oz and 8#3). Those are the basics.
If it was just tbem.being grumpy i.would chalk it up to.temperament and learn to.deal, but with the other stuff going on, i feel very certain that something is causing them.discomfort…i.just don’t know what it.is. They have had a few days where they seem.relatively happy but i have not.managed to figure.out what was different about those days.

*mucous in poop; mucous can look like: snot, jelly, cottage cheese, stringy like the inside of a banana
*foul-smelling poop

And how strictly do you avoid dairy? When children can’t properly break down the proteins in dairy, they often can’t break the proteins down in soy either. And when avoiding dairy…. it means ALL dairy… not just fresh… and you have to carefully read labels. Dairy is hidden in a lot of things.
Mucousy, green stool is a classic sign that your little one is not properly digesting his food and often times it means they have MSPI. Milk/soy protein intolerance.
There are other foods other than dairy and soy that can cause reactions. You can read more about it on the Total Elimination Diet page.
April 23, 2013 at 11:52 am #72126AnonymousInactiveAt first i.was just eliminating obvious.dairy, which did.not seem.to.do.anything. After.a.couple.weeks i.became.a.label.reader and.avoided everything (tried.to.stay away from.soy, but haven’t been stringent.at all). I was never really sure if it was helping or.not as i was also.doing block feeding so any improvement.was not.directly traceable.
So….i.am.back to.thinking.it.is dairy. The other day (friday) my MIL slipped.me some.sausage with cheese (it.didn’t occur to.me.that sausage would have cheese. I also.asked before.consuming.the.meal.if.there.was any dairy in.it.and.was.told.no!)(she.is.very passive aggressive or.else.it.was.a.mistake). As soon as i realized it i stopped eating.it. the next day though was honestly.the best day.of.their.lives. They were.smiling.and.laughing.and.not.in.pain.and.they both had normal looking yellow.poop.with seeds.and.everything. So i.figured that it.was.NOT dairy and.was the.block.feeding and.that night i went all.crazy at my DHs birthday party and ate.all the dairy i.could get my hands.on, knowing.that maybe the next day(s) could be rough. Well…they were. Gas and.not.sleeping.and.lots.and.lots.of.screaming. I.don’t understand why the sausage cheese didn’t cause a.reaction, but i am.back.off.all.dairy again.
The crazy thing.though.is.that since that normal-ish.poop.on.Saturday, they both pooped again yesterday and.again.it.seemed.normal (a.little stinky, but.not.remotely.like.how.it had been).
So.for.now.i.am.back.off.dairy and.obvious soy and hoping that will be.enough to get us.back.to the good.happy.place. They seem.to.be getting.there.
I.don’t know.that their.poop.had.mucus.in.it.(back.when.it.was.stinky.and.green.and.thick.and.stringy).. i.never saw.red and.nothing.looked.like.obvious mucus….but it.was.not.normal.
I.feel.like.we.are.getting.on.the.right track.finally. before, i.was never sure that eliminating.dairy.was.actually.necessary, so.i.kind.of.resented.it. Now that i.know.it.is.helping, it isn’t bad. I.would.do.anything.to.avoid the screaming…that.is.the.other.thing.is.that there.never were.tons.of.signs. No.rash or.obvious.blood. Just really.fussy all day babies that slept.well at.night, nursed all.the time, spit.up.all the time with weird poop. Everyone was telli g.me.that i.just needed.to.learn.to.deal.with.it.becasue.babies.cry. I.KNEW something.was.wrong. i.hate that nobody believed.me..

May 4, 2013 at 12:44 pm #72173AnonymousInactiveI totally get what you’re saying about being frustrated when nobody believed you. 🙁 That is not a good feeling. I think that most of us moms that have had children with digestive problems, go through having others not believe that something is wrong with our babies.
I bet that the reason your little ones didn’t react to the sausage/cheese is that is wasn’t a big amount and they hadn’t had any dairy for awhile. Sometimes it is that way, that a little amount of dairy here and there won’t bother them. But when a baby can’t break down proteins properly, then those proteins will stay in their system. If they have little bits of dairy here and there and even if they aren’t bothered right away, they might be bothered awhile later by the build up of proteins.
Have you heard of, or considered taking a supplement of digestive enzymes and probiotics or giving them to your little ones directly? You can learn a lot more about how and why probiotics and enzymes could possibly help by going to my blog and reading there. Feel free to ask questions if you would have any.
My heart goes out to you having 2 babies at once with digestive problems. (((HUGS))) I hope you soon find the right things to help your little ones feel better!!

May 21, 2013 at 7:53 am #72184AnonymousInactiveJust a quick update: we have an appointment with the ped GI later today. I have been dairy free and there has been some improvement with their dispositions (until this week…where if i didn’t know better I would say someone slipped me butter)but their spitting is still constant and their poop is not looking any more normal. I think there is mucus in it now. I bought some probjotics to try but tried them on me only to discover that they were not truly dairy free and I haven’t had a chance to pick up more.
May 21, 2013 at 11:57 am #72185AnonymousInactiveThank you for the update!
I am glad there has been some improvement. But sorry things went backwards this week. 🙁 It does seem as if you had some offending food. What about soy? Often times when babies can’t tolerate the proteins in dairy, they can’t tolerate it in soy either.
Beings your little ones do better without dairy, then most likely it is because they are unable to properly break down and digest the proteins in the dairy. Proteins are very hard to break down and require lots of digestive enzymes to do it. Some baby’s systems have a hard time keeping up making enough enzymes. I would highly recommend to not only take probiotics but digestive enzymes too.
We use Digestive Health sold by Core Health Products. It is dairy and soy free. It contains 13 strains of probiotics, prebiotics (which are food for the probiotics), over 20 types of digestive enzymes, and several soothing herbs for the gut.

But be aware that it is possible that they can cause temporary side effects sometimes.

May 22, 2013 at 11:02 am #72186AnonymousInactiveI have been avoiding soy also, but only really carefully for a couple.weeks. they have done okay without the dairy in my diet (a whole world.of difference from how they were initially), but their poop was still stinky stretchy and green (sorry) and their moods have been hit or miss, and usually the same at the same time (leading me to this k there was still some.dietary component).
The doctor changed their RX to pepcid. He said they are gaining well and we will reevaluate next month at their 6 month visit to make sure that they still are gaining. I am not super convinced that one is gaining all that well…the smaller one has only gained 4oz (different scales though) in a month. He seemed to be anti PPI, because they seem to be doing well enough without it. I am okay with trying the pepcid first and pushing for something else if that doesn’t work. I think maybe their recent backslide could have been the zantac not working anymore.
It was nice that they exhibited all the bad symptoms while we were there, so he got to see the crying and the arching and the spit up everywhere constantly. Usually people just dismiss me as being a hypochondriac….so at least that didn’t happen. I am not 100% happy with how it went, but I think it could have gone much worse and I do feel like hewould be receptive to medicine cchanges if need be.
May 22, 2013 at 11:15 am #72187AnonymousInactiveThat IS nice that your children showed all your symptoms to the doctor. 🙂
I hope things continue to improve!!!
