OK, this is a long story, so I will try to be brief. At nine months, I tried taking McKenzie down to two nursing sessions a day (and supplementing with formula) but unrestricting my diet, to see if she could handle it OK. (Previous food trials she had been fine during the day, but couldn’t sleep well at night, so I thought this might work.
Anyway, this started on Nov 12th. This past Sat (the 21st I think) when I BF McKenzie in the AM, she vomited immediately afterwards. She has a cold and was coughing a lot, so I thought she just choked herself. Well that mid AM after her bottle of neocate, she puked again. So I was that evening when I gave her neocate she puked again. So of course I am thinking she has a bug. Then I am wondering if it is a reaction to the Amoxicillin she is taking for an ear infection. Then I am wondering…is she possibly reacting to something I am eating. So on Sunday we skip an Amoxicillin dose and no throw up, but the DR. says we have to give it to her for at least 7 days, so we do. She is fine but four hours later she throws up (after BM). So Monday I decide to pump all day and just give her formula. No throw up, but major spit ups (more than normal) after each Amoxicillin dose. Tues. AM I BF and she seems fine, but then she starts coughing and then throws up. So mu question is this…do you think she just has a bug, or is reacting to the amoxicillin, or is it food intolerance. The only reason I was not thinking food intolerance was because it has been over a week and a half before this happened. And previous food trials did not have any vomit associated with it…What do y’all think? I decided to pump for the rest of today and tomorrow (then we will be done with the medicine) and then try BF again, and if she pukes again, I will determine it is something in my diet still….

It could be too, that the drainage from the cold/ears is causing some nasty mucous in her tummy that is upsetting it.But it does take some proteins awhile to build up in our (and their) systems, so it is possible that she would just now be reacting to something when she hadn’t before. It’s really hard to say when there are so many variables at play.I wish I had better insight for you.November 25, 2008 at 11:02 pm #58988hellbenntKeymasterI guess finish w/ the antibiotics, then give probiotics and see where you are?
November 26, 2008 at 6:59 am #58991AnonymousInactiveHmmmm…Interesting…My DD did the same thing when on amoxicillin a few weeks back. Every time I would give her dose she would either immediately throw it up or she would throw up after finishing the bottle. My Ped didn’t seem to think that it was an allergy necessarily, but once we stopped the antibiotics…guess what…she didn’t throw up anymore. I’d think it was the antibiotics. Has she been on them before? I would be curious how she does once finishing them.
November 26, 2008 at 8:05 am #58994AnonymousInactiveantibiotic seems to be the culprit from reading your post….. is the amoxicillin flavored? can you call the pharmacy and find out… also, they might be a better judge of what the meds will do, etc…
November 26, 2008 at 3:46 pm #59011AnonymousInactiveThanks guys. Well I decided to just pump for yesterday and today, because this AM was the last does of meds. She hasn’t thrown up since yesterday morning, but I don’t think I got ANY meds in her at all as she spit most of it out. Anyway, I am going to try and nurse her tomorrow morning and then we will see what happens. I have been giving her probiotics for the past few days and the poops seem back to normal…how long am I supposed to keep up with them? I really don’t like giving her probiotics because they seem to bother her a bit too (not what made her throw up as that happened before I started the probiotics.
