This week has been kind of a bad week…Anderson is 7 weeks old today and he has been SO irritable every time he is awake. He cries I change his diaper, I feed him, I rock him, I exhaust myself because he cries and I hear the reflux coming up his throat and he coughs and grunts.
He is on Zantac and has been for 3 weeks and it doesn’t seem to be helping at all. I called the doctor today and requested to be on prevacid and am waiting for her to call me back. I just want our baby to be happy, that is all I want and I don’t know how to do it.SusannahJune 12, 2008 at 8:01 pm #52531AnonymousInactiveHi and welcome.
We have all been there and you are in the hardest part. Prevacid is a great first step. Are you BFing or formula? if BFing have you tried elimination or if you are formula feeding, what formula is Anderson (love the name!) on?You have definitely given Zantac an appropriate amount of time to work (and then some) so it is time to move on and try something else.Hang in there! Have you seen Laura’s intro post? It has a TON of information and tips to help with getting through this until you get teh food/meds combination figured out.I’m sure other moms will have more advice! Hang in there!!!Ann MarieJune 12, 2008 at 8:09 pm #52532AnonymousInactiveGive him some Cherry Mylanta Supreme to help with the pain until you can get a stronger med like prevacid. Also even though the Zantac doesn’t seem to be working, keep using it for 2 wks after you start the prevacid,.. just space 4hrs apart so that he continues to have some relief. Good Luck… you are on the right track.
June 13, 2008 at 11:41 am #52535AnonymousInactiveThe other ladies have said what I would. I never thought Landen would outgrow reflux and he did. He was really bad and I cried with him for so many days/weeks. Hang in there. This too shall pass. (it really will!)
June 13, 2008 at 8:00 pm #52553hellbenntKeymasterhi & welcome!

also, how much does he weigh? we can help you find the MAXIMUM zantac dose for his weight (10 mgs per kilo)
and, also:
don’t call the doctor, FAX!
FAX FAX FAX the dr
dont wait for a call…
start off w/ a THANK YOU
keep it short & sweet
stick to the facts (no feelings and no rambling emotions)
state current meds, doses, symptoms
make request- flat out- short & sweet
THANK AGAIN
follow up by calling office to say fax was sent
call again later to discuss requests in fax, ie: have you called in the increased/changed prescription yet? THANK YOUJune 13, 2008 at 10:45 pm #52564AnonymousInactiveHey, thanks for your advice. Anderson weighs around 8lbs 12 oz. as of last week. He’s 7 weeks old. The dr. put him on 2 ml of prevacid solutabs today!! We’ll see how that works…
I just get so worried about his reflux, it really breaks my heart.June 14, 2008 at 8:40 am #52566AnonymousInactiveI am confused by what your doctor prescribed. The solutabs come in 15mg and 30mg tablets that dissolve in your mouth. The 2ml part makes it sound like a compound. Tell us exactly what the doc told you to give and how and maybe we can help some. sorry I am just confused by what you wrote and want to make sure he gave you the “right” stuff.
June 14, 2008 at 9:00 am #52567hellbenntKeymasterI’m guessing the dr gave you a prescription for a prevacid solutab (probably 15mgs) and told you to break it in half and then take that half and mix w/ 2ml of water…of course this is just a guess! and I’m being ‘mean’ about your doctor, lol!
if that’s the case, then it’s only 7.5mgs a day and that’s a very low dose…
Regardless, the solutabs need to be given on an empty stomach and follwed by a meal 30 minutes later. also it can take up to 14 days for you to see their full effect, so if you have zantac, I would most definitely give that as well, 4hrs seperate from the prevacid, until you see improvement from the prevacid and also for use in the ‘meantime’ in case the dose is way too low…
June 14, 2008 at 10:52 am #52570AnonymousInactiveEXACTLY!! Me too, I was confused by this dosage. I called the pharmacist and he helped. The doctor gave him Prevacid solutabs in 15mg pills. The pharm told me to dillute them in 15 ml of water and draw up 2 ml of water/prevacid. He had two vomits yesterday during/right after eating. He hardly ever does that… So the zantac should be given until day 12 or 14, 4 hrs. apart from the prevacid??
Thanks guys,SusannahAlso, my post pregnancy brain was not thinking last night and took a multi vitamin with 27mg of iron and took another one with 18ml of iron, I’m afraid of an overdose on iron. THis can be fatal to children under 6…my mom is a nurse and said it’s nothing to worry about. Just seeing what you guys knew…June 14, 2008 at 11:09 am #52571AnonymousInactiveOkay so what I am “hearing” is that you dissolve a 15mg tab in 15 ml of water and then draw up 2ml… Well there are a few problems with that. ISt being that the med is only good for 15 min once it is in water so you are wasting one tab daily for what appears to be 2mg of med is you even get that much when you draw it up. I would do what Laura said and use a 1/2 tab daily and at this age, I would hold the tab in the side of his cheek with my finger and use a bit of water to help dissolve it. HTH.
June 15, 2008 at 10:17 am #52607hellbenntKeymasterOK, now we need to work on the dose!
then we can help you with what to do. in a way it’s ‘good’ that they told you the ‘wrong’ way to do all of this because maybe you’ll have extra medicineJune 20, 2008 at 2:49 pm #52830AnonymousInactiveAnderson is on the solutabs, and they are helping w/ the vomits, but now his little tummy is hurting. He crie during feedings and takes 2 oz. of b milk and I have to force the other 1 oz. He’s been on the prevacid for 1 week exactly. I asked the rx about taking the zantac too during his transition and he said no, too muc med.
Is this commom, tummy trouble with prevacid?June 20, 2008 at 4:48 pm #52842hellbenntKeymasterI’m not sure how much prevacid you’re giving? how much how many times a day? are you giving it on an empty stomach followed by a meal 30 minutes later?
if it’s not a ‘proper’ dose of prevacid, then perhaps he’s being bothered by the reflux itself rather than the medication? -
