Dallin’s older sis, Ashley had acid reflux. She was put on Cimetidine and seemed great a few days later. She was fine on Cimetidine for a year. Dallin seems worse. I can hear him refluxing like crazy. He’s way more fussy and has more intolerance problems, etc. I’ve been to billions of doctors, and no one will prescribe me a PPI. Zantac and Axid have done nothing. Every doctor I have been to has made me feel stupid, and even like a horrible mom, for even thinking of putting my child on a PPI. It makes me start to wonder if they are right. Why do I want this drug that isn’t even tested and approved for my little 6 week old?? I wonder if his reflux is bad enough….maybe we can just find ways to wait it out?? I know our situation is not as bad as many of yours because he doesn’t cry and cry and cry. He has episodes, and is sometimes fussy/crying/ and awake for hours at night. I can hear it, and he cries when it comes up, when he has hiccups, etc. He definitely has a milk/soy intolerance and is on Nutramigen. Sometimes I wonder if he needs Neocate because his stools are still sometimes mucusy and he has excema/crazy baby acne. I don’t know.
And then there are moments when I KNOW he is hurting because of his reflux when I am so very confident about trying to get him on a PPI. I feel like it would really help him. I at least want to try! I want to give it the two weeks and see if he is drastically different. I just wonder what you guys think. I know he has it. I know it causes pain. I just wonder how much I should fight for a drug that all these doctors seem to make me feel bad for wanting. How do I know it doesn’t cause some weird thing 15 years down the road?
I just wish I could find a doctor that would prescribe the Zegerid. It is SOOO hard to give him any meds on an empty stomach before he eats. He is always starving and screaming for his food. I think it soothes his throat at first. But lately he seems to be getting worse and has also starting wanted way less oz. per feeding. We have to bounce him to get him to eat more. But I guess that’s another topic.
I guess I’m wanting to know what you all think. He sleeps for 4-5 hour stretches at night sometimes, but sometimes he can’t sleep for hours because of his reflux. He doesn’t cry for long periods of time, but he cries about it and seems to be in plenty of pain. It’s just that the pain doesn’t last forever. Oh, and every time I take him to the drs he seems to be a perfect baby. Of course.
April 14, 2008 at 8:06 am #50290AnonymousInactiveplain and simple you need to find a doctor that wil prescribe a ppi for your child. he is obviosly in pain and the sooner you get the pain under control the better. Maybe try your family doc as I have heard the some moms have had better luck with them than with peds. Whatever you do don’t feel bad for trying to make your child feel better.
April 14, 2008 at 8:48 am #50292AnonymousInactiveAre you in NYC? (forgive me if I am thinking of someone else) Are you willing to travel? I bet there are some moms in NY somewhere that have a GI that would give you an Rx for a PPI and Neocate. With an Rx for the neocate, often times you get get insurance coverage (but there are some of us who cannot. lol)
coming back to edit : I just looked in ped/specialists ans I think shanesmom (Lauren) had a suggestion for you! if you can travel, it would be sooo worth it to get your lil guy comfortable!coming back to edit again (LOL) if you go under “Pediatricians/Specialists” forum, look on pg4 I think. There is a Dr. Nancy Pittman in NYC (Mount Sinai) can you go see her? apparently she’ll dose the higher dose of a PPI. I feel for you, I went through this in FL. The GI’s we saw were both affiliated with the 2 major childrens hospitals in central FL and I couldn’t get anywhere with either of them!jilly782008-04-14 09:04:38

April 14, 2008 at 11:34 am #50296AnonymousInactiveI agree wtih Beth!. I had a wonderful ped that would prescribe a ppi,but sent us to a GI dr here in Missouri when her could not get her pain under control. Ashlynn would eat alot in her early days of reflux. (comfort eater). stcwatt2008-04-14 11:34:30
April 15, 2008 at 5:10 pm #50374AnonymousInactivethank you – all of you. I think I am feeling more and more that I need to really push a trial of Neocate and a PPI for sure. I have heard that sometimes Prevacid is bad for MSPI babies?? I would travel if I knew a Dr would prescribe the right dosage of Zegerid or some other great PPI plus a NEOCATE prescription. Someone else wrote that Nancy Pittman doesn’t really listen to you. Hmm….
