I brought my 1 month old to Dr last Friday for grunting and grimicing and spitting up. She put him on Zantac but it is Tuesday and I feel like not only is it not helping, but it is getting worse. It is breaking my heart to see him make these horrible noises bc I know he is in pain. I haven’t gotten more than an hour sleep in the last 2 weeks bc he is just grunting so much at night. I feel like crying. I just want him to feel better. I am taking him back to the Dr this afternoon. I am also heavily considering buying an Amby bed. I am totally new to this and still trying to understand everything. My first didn’t have this, so it’s a completely new adventure for me. Any help or advice would be so much appreciated. Also if anyone has any advice on the Amby bed as well that would be great. Thanks

I don’t know much about the amby bed, someone else needs to chime in about that. Are you bf or formula and if formula which type. It does get better.

February 19, 2008 at 5:13 pm #48366AnonymousInactiveHe is BF. Just came from Dr and they did an abdominal xray today. she upped his dose from 1 ml to 1.2 ml twice a day. It’s so frustrating bc they don’t seem to understand the magnitude of nightime. He makes horrible grunting noises in his sleep ALL night long. Thanks for the link…gonna check it out now…
February 19, 2008 at 5:39 pm #48368AnonymousInactiveYou will find that most peds. just don’t understand and honestly most people don’t understand. We are here for you though. Have you thought about this maybe being food allergy relatedl?
As for the amby bed, I loved it because I just had to bounce it real quick to get Justice back to sleep. I will say though that it honestly didn’t make a huge difference. What finally got my little man sleeping well was leaving him latched on all night to nurse. I guess my bm must have soothed his little throat while he was sleeping. So, I can’t say the amby was the answer to our problems, but I do love it. If you decide to get one check for one on craig’s list or ebay. They are much cheaper that way. If you decide to get a new one instead those are options of ways to sell it if it doesn’t work for you.February 19, 2008 at 5:49 pm #48369AnonymousInactiveThanks for the info about the Amby bed! I would love to let him stay asleep BF, but am worried that it will make him spit up more? We all sleep better when he nurses, but I am afraid to not burp him. I have even started feeding him sitting up instead of laying down…which is SO not fun, but there are so many nights, where I just want to let him stay asleep at the breast.
I am going to try the elimination diet as soon as I read up on it.I feel fortunate after lurking around the forums. He spits a lot, but it’s not everytime that he looks like he’s in lots of pain. Nighttime is just horrible with the painful sounds…but he doesn’t seem to make them as much during the day?I’m not sure what to think, I will get the results of the xray in the am and will see the Dr in another week. It just seems to be a rollercoaster.February 19, 2008 at 9:38 pm #48382AnonymousInactiveHi-
I am also very new to this but wanted to welcome you and tell you you’re not alone and what a relief this website has been for me. Its given support and most needed information. I have learned way more here than from my peditrician or other websites. I’ve learned things by looking thru some of the old posts from others too. Lauras info. page is priceless and will help you lots. I can tell you that we just switched to prevacid from zantac and although things arent perfect yet they are SO improved. So I am an advocate for switching to the PPI.Good luck and I hope you get some rest.heatherFebruary 20, 2008 at 9:36 am #48396AnonymousInactiveYou could always try it one night just to see how it goes. My little man was not a spitter, but my friends boy was and she also nursed him all night long. As for the burping, people in other countries don’t even burp their little ones at all. They actually think we are strange for doing so. So, I wouldn’t worry a lot about that. I would say if you try it and your baby wakes up crying then maybe try to burp him. Burping caused my older son a lot of pain so a lot of the time I just didn’t bother. He seemed to do better not being burped. I would say just try it and see how it goes. With them laying on your arm they should be at a good angel . You have to kind of work with it to figure out works best for you both. I couldnl’t nurse laying on my side so I layed on my back and had my little guy on my side and he layed on his side. I hope something works for you guys soon.
February 20, 2008 at 12:53 pm #48402AnonymousInactiveJust a little note, with Ashlynn she did better when I stopped burping her.
February 20, 2008 at 1:27 pm #48405AnonymousInactiveWell, his abdominal xray came back normal. Woo hoo! I did try to lay him more at an incline last night and I did nurse him laying down but inclined as well, and did not burp him one of the times. It seemed to be ok. We got more sleep last night than we have in the last couple weeks…maybe all the positive thoughts from everyone! Makes sense about not burping him. He always follows his burps with squealing and spitting up. So, I will try and see how he does.
Thank you so much for all the feedback, it is so nice to have replies! It’s like my little breath of fresh air to feel so encouraged.February 20, 2008 at 4:43 pm #48414AnonymousInactiveI am soooooooo excited for you! That is awesome! Keep us updated. Who knows maybe you can tell the other moms what you are trying and maybe it will help their little ones too.
February 21, 2008 at 8:15 am #48447AnonymousInactiveIt must have been a miracle night…last night was rough
February 21, 2008 at 8:58 am #48450AnonymousInactiveOh no. I hate that rollercoaster ride. Some days and nights are good and some are bad and some are really really bad. I’m sorry. I’m glad you got one night of good rest though. Is it possible it was something you ate that made things worse? Have you tryed giving an h-2 blocker along with the ppi he is already taking? If not maybe try pepcid complete before bedtime. You have to give it 4 hrs apart from the ppi. I don’t think it ever worked with my little guy, but it’s always worth a shot.
February 21, 2008 at 10:13 am #48456AnonymousInactiveWell, I am doing the elimination diet advised by Dr. Sears, so I am eating practically nothing! He is only prescribed Zantac, and his dr said she will only prescribe a ppi after they have seen a Ped Gi. She wants to see how he does over this week. His spitting up really has seemed to slow up. It’s not as much as it was a week ago. He was just so restless and noisy last night. I’m really worried about giving him Zantac though. I saw so much on here how it either doesn’t work, or they have to keep upping the dose…of course I don’t want him to hurt at all, but I’m so concerned about meds. why is it that he seems to be ok during the day, but at night he seems like he is in pain? Thank you so much for always responding.
