OMG! What is going on??! My lo has been awake and fussing since 6:30 this morning! No matter WHAT we do she wont stay asleep. She is totally restless and unable to settle for more two-three minutes. Why does she do this?? This has been an off and on-more on-problem wioth her for so long and I dont understand WHAT it is??!! Furthermore, she hasn’t done it at all this week-once we started the Neocate. Is it the reflux? How do I even know if she HAS reflux anymore??? Im SO confused and losing my mind. It took us 4 years to have a second baby because our first was colicky. This is TEN TIMES harder to deal with. I’m just really not in a good place right now. ANY insight is appreciated
July 14, 2008 at 1:12 am #53854AnonymousInactiveI am sooo sorry you’re having to go through this. Its no fun. It really sucks b/c one day its good, the next its bad. Then it’ll trick ya for a few good days and then BAM its bad again. Ugh! Forgive me, my memory is bad but has she had any tests? How are her bms? Are you thickening with anything (rice cereal)? Any other symptoms?
Hopefully, one of these other lovely ladies can chime in with suggestions. Here is one of my posts from a few months back. Honestly, this post feels like forever ago. We have come a long way! Here is a few good post to read when you’re feeling down:HUGSJuly 14, 2008 at 8:06 am #53858hellbenntKeymasteris the prevacid still 7.5mg 1x a day?
she probably needs more.unfortunately neocate isn’t ‘the’ answer for all babies-a lot of baboes need meds along with it, tooJuly 14, 2008 at 8:48 am #53860AnonymousInactiveI agree with laura that I believe if that is her dose, it is probably not enough. aLso, for us, it took 2 weeks on the Neocate until things got into a better groove. We had some days that were worse than before neocate, but I think that was all of the other formula and stuff working it’s way out of their systems and they were healing from the milk based formulas. I wouldn’t throw in the towel just yet on the neocate. Give it the FULL two weeks as it did take that long for things to even out. You are half way there!!! I would still see about upping the prevacid though as that might hlep. What form of prevacid are you on? Hang in there!!!
July 14, 2008 at 9:10 am #53862AnonymousInactiveHow do I know if this is Reflux or the allergy?? I dont even know if she has reflux or ever did?? The only symptom I could list right now would be not being able to sleep?? What else should bethere for her to have reflux?? HELP
July 14, 2008 at 9:53 am #53867AnonymousInactiveMore often than not, if your child has a milk/soy type intolerance reflux is a symptom of that. I didn’t even notice the dose of Prevacid. I agree with Laura also that 7.5mg once a day is probably not enough. Once my ds was on Elecare (similar to Neocate) his excema went away quickly. But, it did take the full 2 weeks for his feeds to improve and his reflux to settle down.
July 14, 2008 at 9:53 am #53868AnonymousInactiveTypically, reflux is a symptom, not a diagnosis. For example, if a baby has an immature LES, (lower esophageal spincter) then it doesn’t hold food in the tummy well and then it can crawl up the esophagus and burn. Some babies spit up, some not. For my boys I thing it was a combination of the immature LES, and in addition and intolerance to the milk/soy based formulas. I believe that their guts were just very immature and it was too difficult to digest the milk/soy based formulas. When we put them on Neocate, their reflux dramatically improved, but until their LES’ matured, they didn’t stop spitting up and it would burn if they were not on the prevacid so they needed both PPI and neocate to feel better.
Every baby is different, and I’m sure there are a lot of other reasons for reflux as well. I would think that maybe you have a combination of teh immature LES as well as allergy or intolerance to the formula, so there is a combination of meds and formula that might work? I am not sure though. I hope others have more input as well….July 14, 2008 at 10:02 am #53870AnonymousInactiveNow that I have read one of your other posts- the constipation definitely could cause the fussiness and inability to settle. I would have that checked out. It still could be reflux, but the constipation isn’t helping.

KatieJuly 14, 2008 at 1:34 pm #53884AnonymousInactiveI agree with everyone else that the dose of prevacid is probably to low and that she needs more in addition to the Neocate. They all explained the allergy reflux stuff pretty well. Sometimes we have to do both meds and formula changes to get to where they are happy/healthy. Good Luck.
