So I’ve been going dairy free for about a week, and noticed that Ezra was much much better. He was able to hang out on his own happily without crying, much less reflux and hardly any issues with BM’s. However, this was also the 2nd week of prevacid, so I actually thought it was just the meds working and I decided to reintroduce dairy on thursday night. I had nachos and icecream! I noticed that friday afternoon he had a gassy spell but it didn’t last too long. But this weekend has been awful! He’s back to screaming for hrs at a time, lots of wet burps, spitting up, projectile vomiting, and his tummy is SO upset! No amopunt of gas drops or mylanta are helping. Could one meal of dairy have this effect? If he had an issue with dairy would it make him reflux more or would it just upset his tummy? I’m taking it back out of course, but I’m just curious. Is it conceivable to think that maybe dairy is his only issue, and without that in his diet he wouldn’t need to be on meds at all? Also, in regards to medication, I’m giving him the marci kids dose as suggested, but it’s 7.5 mg’s more than the pediatrician is willing to prescribe. I’m waitting for the bufferbabies in the mail, but when it arrives, can I make up that extra dosaging with OTC prevacid?
July 2, 2012 at 12:15 pm #70515hellbenntKeymasteryes! one meal of dairy can do this…
it can take a bit to clear it from your system again…issue w/ milk protein can exacerbate or even cause refluxbest EXPLANATION OF FOOD ALLERGIES/INTOLERANCES and their RELATION TO REFLUX that I have found, to date: 2nd post: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2697&PN=2
you can try no meds- first I’d get back to diet for a good week, then you can try cutting back on meds- not stopping cold turkey…July 3, 2012 at 6:35 am #70517AnonymousInactivevery good info thanks! Do you know about whether it would work to use OTC prevacid in combo with RX solutabs to get the dosage I want? Hoping marci-kids comes in the mail today….
July 3, 2012 at 11:26 am #70518hellbenntKeymasteryes you can use both. the solutabs need to be given on an empty stomach, followed by a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later
you cannot use the solutabs w/ the productswhen you use the products, you can use capsules or tablets. if you use capsules & find a little tablet in it, discard that. the beads have the medicine.when you use the products you do not have to time the meds around food. you can give them whenever you want.when you give a PPI (prevacid in this case), you must space it 4hrs from zantac and from mylanta.zantac & mylanta can be given together or near one another, just not near the PPI.July 3, 2012 at 8:54 pm #70519AnonymousInactiveI’m confused, the solutabs have to be given on an empty stomach which is why they can’t be used with the products, but capsules or tablets CAN be taken with food, and can be used with the products?? I just paid $150 for 15 solutabs this afternoon -uggh!
July 6, 2012 at 3:24 pm #70521hellbenntKeymasteryou’ve got it. solutabs on empty stomach, followed by a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later. they canNOT be used w/ the products.
capsules and tablets CAN be used with the products. when used w/ the products, they can be given at any time.when capsules and tablets are not used w/ the products, they, too, must be given on an empty stomach (well, the beads from the capsules is what you use & you give them w/ a tsp of applesauce) and then follow w/ a ‘meal’ 30 minutes laterJuly 6, 2012 at 6:31 pm #70522AnonymousInactivehow come capsules and tablets can be given with meals if with products, but not without?? I wish marci kids was still around, they were so good at answering questions. thanks for everything!~
July 7, 2012 at 1:38 pm #70523hellbenntKeymasterthe products, themselves, make it possible- they provide a buffer- any explanation that they gave, way back when is the same explanation now
this might help?
July 20, 2012 at 6:19 pm #70552AnonymousInactiveHi Caetlin, I have been away from this site for awhile because what started out to be a week long camping trip with my dad ended up with him in the hospital after being hit in the head with a rock while hiking. He passed away at the hospital.
So I am now trying to catch up with the latest “news” on this site.
I am sorry that your little guy didn’t like the Digestive Health pills. I personally have opened up a capsule, mixed it with water and drank it just so I would know what it tasted like. It wasn’t horrible but wasn’t very good and I don’t blame a baby for not liking it. And I don’t blame you as a Mama for not trying to force it.
I hope Ezra is doing better by now but… If you are still breastfeeding have you tried taking the pills yourself? If not, I would highly suggest taking one with every meal. By doing this the enzymes in it will break down the proteins in your milk and will make it MUCH easier for your baby’s tummy to digest.
I wish you the best!
July 23, 2012 at 10:05 pm #70563AnonymousInactiveOh my, I’m SO sorry to hear about your father, that’s just awful!!!!! 🙁 I hope you and your family have some time together to get through this difficult time.
It’s so nice of you to check in, Ezra has been put on 30 mg of prevacid two weeks ago -does that seem like a lot? We’re using the old marci kids products, so that makes it easier to get in him. I’ve been on an elimination diet for two weeks also, no dairy, soy, wheat or gluten. It’s so hard to tell if there’s a difference or not. Although I know the meds are working to an extent (his bad breath has gone away, and much less screaming) he’s still certainly refluxing. You can hear it, he’s sometimes woken from a dead sleep, he still vomits and spits up a lot, sometimes pulls off the breasts screaming, etc etc. I feel like with 30 mg it should be better than that, so I’m calling tomorrow to discuss switching to prilosec. I’ve been taking the Digestive Health pills myself, and giving him the completegest which he prefers the taste to. They definitely work so we’ll keep it up, I’m so thankful that you told me about them.
thanks again for checking in, I’ll keep you posted and all the best to you and your fam!
July 24, 2012 at 12:17 am #70564AnonymousInactiveThank you! All my family lives in Nebraska and I in Kansas. But we did have some good tome together there around the funeral. I kind of wish I was still there but, KS is home and its best to be happy and accept that. My mom said she was thinking to maybe come visit me next weekend so that would be lovely. 🙂
My son Jackson was taking 30mg of Prevacid when he was 6 months old. I thought it was pretty high but the GI said it was ok temporarily. But even at that high of a dose he was still having reflux. 🙁
How often are you taking the Digestive Health pills? I would suggest that you take one every time you eat something. It will help break down the proteins in your milk so that it is easier for Ezra to digest.
I’m glad things are getting a bit better for your little guy and I hope it continues! 🙂
July 24, 2012 at 6:17 pm #70569AnonymousInactiveJust spoke with the GI specialist and asked about switching to prilosec. She said that one PPI is the same as all of the others and there was no point. I said, well tylonol works better for me than ib profin, and prozac works better for me than wellbutrin, why couldn’t the same concept be applied to PPI’s? She had no good answer for this. What do you guys think? Could one PPI work better than another? Any BTDT stories?
July 24, 2012 at 7:31 pm #70570AnonymousInactiveI really don’t know the difference. But that kind of stinks that she didn’t have real answers for you. There are many kinds of medicines that are relatively the same but because different people react and respond differently to them some work better than others. I like your question about the way other meds work differently. 🙂 I guess you could do a little research on the differences between different meds and then tell her what you found and what you’d like to try and why.
July 25, 2012 at 7:01 pm #70571hellbenntKeymasterYOU are correct! Some work better than others! Just like your example!
Also: zegerid is fantastic and it has prilosec…and just prilosec and one of the ‘products’ is also great! as is any PPI w/ one of the products- each baby is different…What form of prevacid were/are you giving? sometimes it’s one form that works better than another- for instance, some don’t fine success w/ solutabs – it might be the aspertame in them…July 25, 2012 at 8:53 pm #70575AnonymousInactivewell the GI specialist called back today and said that we was going to give me 20 mg a day of prilosec tablets to use with the products. He has been on 30 mg a day of prevacid capsules used with the products. I asked her if the PPI’s are all the same, then why a lower dosage? She said that prilosec and prevacid are not the same mg for mg. Doesn’t that imply that prilosec is a stronger PPI? Should I expect a relapse period while switching? I’m nervous that 30 mg of prevacid hasn’t done the trick, and that by doing a lower dosage of prilosec will make things worse. any thoughts?
