After reading a few posts where people have had more luck with their GP< I decided to go to my husbands GP today- who he loves- and talk about medications and dosages. Although he wasn’t in total agreeance with some of my comments re dosage, he was prepared to increase her Zantac (and prescribe it as a effervescent so it doesn’t have the alcohol the syrup does) and prescribe an increased dosage of Zoton (Lansoprazole)– which comes in a sachet and can be dissolved as well. Given she was doing OK on Zantac alone (not perfect but bearable) I was pretty happy with that. Bugger the pead now, I will just go through him, he will consider upping the dose if I try for two weeks with no luck. At least he was open minded about it all.
Moral of story- maybe it would be worth trying your GP (providing they are able to prescribe the meds- in Aus some can only be prescribed by specialists)
November 6, 2006 at 8:19 am #17273hellbenntKeymasterwhat brand rice cereal? maybe it’s something in the cereal like milk or soy?
beechnut doesn’t have any milk or soy…
not that this is the answer per se, just one more thing to think about…
November 6, 2006 at 9:50 am #17277AnonymousInactiveHave you considered letting him sleep on his belly at night? I know it’s scary, but the AAP does actually recommend tummy sleeping for babies with severe GERD. You can look into getting a monitor if it would give you peace of mind.
November 6, 2006 at 9:56 am #17278hellbenntKeymasterThis is from the American Academy of Pediatrics & how they recommend that tummy sleeping is best for GERD babies. http://www.aap.org/new/sids/question.htm (thanks Sherry & Christine!)
There’s a monitor that you can use called the Angel Care Monitor that many of the parents on this board have had great success with. Jonah was sent home with a monitor from the hospital, so I don’t know firsthand about the Angel Care monitor, but here’s all about it: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/search.asp?KW=angelcare&am p;SM=2&SI=TC&FM=0&OB=2
November 6, 2006 at 11:25 am #17281AnonymousInactiveaw i am sorry guys, he DOES sleep on hi tummy! its the only way he will sleep.. and yes he gets only beechnut, and since starting solids i have been trying to take it out of his bottle and spoon feed him 2x a day… so he is getting less rice, incase that was a problem… ohh well . thank you so much for helping!
and does any of your babies have a problem with acidy fruits like apples or pears? i know they are supposed to be safest.. but that wouldnt make sense for reflux right? i am asking this because i have tried to stay away from them.. but i have to give his prevacid in the applesauce!… could that be making him any worse?
November 6, 2006 at 1:31 pm #17286AnonymousInactiveLauren,
Many babies get gassy and tummy aches from rice cereal. Maybe try oatmeal instead. Many of us have used oatmeal (including myself for all three of my babies) instead of rice with good results. Gerber Oatmeal does have soy in it so if you want to try it Beechnut might be best.
I do think his Prevacid dose is likely too low, though.
November 6, 2006 at 9:16 pm #17323AnonymousInactivehey,
thanks christine..today i tried introducing oatmeal again, and he has rubbed his eyes a couple of times today…. i dont know if that is a coincidence or not… and he doesnt seem to have tummy problems w/rice, at least i dont think so.. i hardly ever hear him pass gas or pull his knees up..
did any one ever have problems with the oatmeal,?i am guessing because of the wheat…. what are other symptoms?
and when everyones baby’s reflux wornt fully controled did they have short naps and hard time sleeping @ night too?
November 6, 2006 at 11:10 pm #17328hellbenntKeymasteryes jonah had terrible sleeping until he got his reflux controlled…
November 7, 2006 at 9:23 am #17340AnonymousInactiveYes, terrible sleep was the main symptom with my first refluxer. She rarely slept more than 40 minutes at a time all night long, and didn’t nap well during the day either. When the reflux was gone she began to sleep 11 hours at night and 3 hours during the day!
November 7, 2006 at 9:53 am #17348AnonymousInactiveohh last question, i promise ;).. does that mean i have to wait for the reflux to be gone? or the acid to be under control? can the reflux w/out it burning cause him to toss and turn and arch all night?
November 7, 2006 at 10:12 am #17352hellbenntKeymasterwhen reflux is ‘under control’ baby still refluxes but w/o pain and in some circumstances, like ours, we saw Jonah’s Sandifer symptoms stop/lessen as the reflux became under control…
when it wasn’t under control completely, there were break through periods- this time period was better than when the reflux was at it’s worst, but still there were times when Jonah was clearly uncomfortable/in pain…
November 7, 2006 at 10:23 am #17353AnonymousInactiveok this is funny, he just did a 1 and a 1/2 hour nap this morning…and he NEVER has done that!… the only thing different is that i didnt give him the pepcid…and i didnt put rice in the bottle… but that wouldnt make sense! haha.. i hope this isnt a one time thing! and last night was the worse.. he arched and turned all night.. maybe thats why he slept long today…
oh well.. i think this whole reflux thing is such a guessing game when it comes down to it.. but everyones prob right , he prob just needs a higher dosage, than i will try and switch afterwards…but thank u again everyone for ur help so far.

November 9, 2006 at 2:57 pm #17540AnonymousInactiveLauren,
Your little one sounds a lot like my daughter. She never had bad poops or skin rash or anything else, but she does have a hard times with naps (wake up after 30 min) and night waking out of no where. My GI suggested a protien intolerance, so I am off dairy and soy (I breast feed) but you know what…she still has those instances when she does wake like you are talking about. But I will tell you something else I have found. ANY medication in suspension causes her sleeping and naps to be worse. Actually, before I got off diary, I was eating it and she was fine. Then she got thrush and had to take meds in suspension, and there went the 30 min nap thing, and night waking. She didn’t seem to fully recover, so I decided to give the dairy free thing a try.
Anyway, long story short. I say this becuase I was giving my daughter pepcid for a while (mine was in supspension, so I assumed that yours is too)and I couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t get her sleep right again. One day I just switched it to Zantac…and things improved so much!!! She still does have some days where she wakes up early from her naps…but they are not nearly as often…and the night waking is even less. Only a few days here and there, and even then, she can get herself back to sleep. Random, but something to try. 🙂
I would try
November 9, 2006 at 7:54 pm #17553AnonymousInactiveReflux does cause sleep issues, but honestly some babies (like my 2 for instance) are just crappy sleepers!!! Austin was horrible to try to get to go to sleep and I gave up on naps when he was 18 months old, Aidan takes a LONG nap in the afternoon, but getting him to initially go to sleep just sucks!!! He just hates to sleep, and the more tired he gets, the harder it is to get him to go to sleep!!!-side note, Austin sleeps just fine now (although he takes melatonin at bedtime b/c his anxiety and worrying make falling asleep hard).
November 9, 2006 at 8:17 pm #17561AnonymousInactiveyea, i am not totally convinced he is mspi.. .i just think he has an easier time digesting his formula when it is alimentum.. and i think the rtf just helps keep it down.. there is no reason to believe he is intolerant. that is interesting to think about with the suspensions… i know when he was on prevacid suspension it hardly did much… but than the solutabs really helped, just like the capsules now. but he was on zantac before and it didnt help at all. but that was also before we started prevacid so, who knows? but thanks i will look into it. 🙂
