Ok-in the grand scheme of things-this isn’t a full on boo-hoo..it just comes at a tough time for me personally. And it’s not a reflux issue, but I like whining to y’all…
So today the Blueberry (no, not her real name-we aren’t hippies!) finally had her suck/swallow test. I had to channel MAJOR Martha Stewart to get it done because we showed up late AGAIN and they tried to turn us down AGAIN because of it. Well hell-you try being the parent of a 3 month old who you are told to keep from eating for hours before the test and see if you don’t have a melt down or two along the way!! Anywhooo…put my nasty face on and got to the administrator of the dept-he obviously didn’t want to come out and deal with me, so he just walked out one of the tech’s who immediately took us back. Did get props from the DH who told me that yes, I was his favorite B.So we do the test, and she has to take a bottle of barium in a bunch of different thicknesses from boobie juice, to formula, to nectar (a couple of variations) to honey while we watch on the X Ray monitor. Almost every time the poor baby had silent aspiration where liquid was entering her windpipe but she wasn’t coughing it up. The DR observing it made the comment of if this was happening this often without complaint, how much is making it down her throat when she chokes. It was really pretty scary to watch how much liquid was sneaking down her windpipe.So-test is over, and they give us the lowdown. BF’ing has to stop-she has to have all foods thickened to a consistency between nectar and honey. We go back in 2 months and if her weak muscle contractions don’t improve, we are going to have to hook electrodes up to her throat while she eats to try and get the muscle to start strengthening..my poor little frankenstein baby with bolts in her neck!!!So-we caught it-that’s good…and she never got hurt-that’s good…and we can still give her BM-that’s really good…but between us moving her crib into her own bedroom last night (), me going back to work today after medical leave, and our BF’ing immediately and painfully ending, I am just feeling very disconnected from our beautiful blueberry.Ok-I’m going to stop whining, put on my big girl panties and go have a pop tart..smooches ladies.August 18, 2008 at 9:41 pm #55468AnonymousInactiveI hope the vital Stim does wonders for her. The frequency is VERY low so it shoudl not be painful for her. I knwo some one on another site who did this with he samll son for the same reason and it did wonders.
They do however slwowly build up the time of the sessions becasu ethe muscles get tired form beign “worked”. This therapy is primarily used on stroke victims but is becoming a trend for children with difficutly swalowing (dysphasia). The one thing you need to ask is IF the SLP who is administering the Vital Stim is certified to do so. They must take a special class and be certified in orde r to preform the therapy on a paitent. So I would def. ask. There are a couple in our rehab center who are certified but NONE of our EI workers are certified. So really I would ask to make sure.BTW did you enjoy your PopTart????? This def. called for a bowl of ice cream at least…LOL HUGE HUGS, this def. is a booohooo don’t feel bad for posting here. I am sure this was VERY hard to go through today!!!!!August 19, 2008 at 10:10 am #55473AnonymousInactiveI read this earlier this morning and could not reply right away. First of all, thanks for the humor again, you always make me laugh!
On the serious side, I am so glad they found out what was going on. I am sure that the thickening will help her immensely! I am so hard you had to grasp all of that news in 1 day though. It is SO hard going through all of this with a newborn. People just don’t know how lucky they are when they have a normal, healthy baby who eats, sleeps and poops normally and who is content all day!I hope that going forward the new advice you’ve gotten will help your baby feel better and make life easier for you now!August 19, 2008 at 9:39 pm #55481AnonymousInactiveHUGS. I am so glad that you found out what was going on. It is so tough but they have her best interests at heart. What thickener are you going to be using? I would recommend simply thick b/c it won’t thicken over time once it gets to the right consistency. The e/vital stim will be fine. It should not hurt her at all and will make a world of difference in the long run. HUGS again and keep us updated on how things are going.
August 21, 2008 at 10:46 am #55549AnonymousInactiveHow did you know to do a suck and swallow test?
zachysmom2008-08-21 10:47:13August 23, 2008 at 11:26 am #55630AnonymousInactiveHowdy all!
Jessica-pop tart was delish!Beth-you are right…we’re doing simply thick. Unfortunately that also means her poop is simply to thick too come out! My ped had us give a little bit of apple juice to get the factory going….you haven’t lived until you have cleaned a sticky, apple scented poop bomb at 3 am.Beth 2.0-she was choking almost every time she ate and it didn’t seem related to the ‘flux. Our specialist got us scheduled for it, but even the lousy pediatrician knew that we needed to do the test-it just took her lousy staff almost 4 weeks to schedule it versus the specialist’s 2 hours. It has made a world of difference-she hasn’t choked once since starting the thickening, which is wonderful! However, she is also not doing the up, eat, and back to sleep in 7 minute routine in the middle of the night any more. It’s more like 30 mins to 2 hours now-that’s doing wonders for my complexion-however, she is liking the extra mom/dad time, little stinker! And crap-my supply has started to wane since I’m exclusively pumping. However, the kiddo is happy, so that is all that counts!BBerrysMom2008-08-23 11:28:39
August 23, 2008 at 1:56 pm #55636AnonymousInactiveI am glad she isn’t choking anymore! Sorry about your supply. I must say, the term ‘flux gave me a chuckle.
I am surprised they said apple juice would help with constipation. I was corrected once on that too. I used to think it helped, but one lovely member on this site told me pear juice is the way to go and let me tell you…it is! If you need to loosen up the cannon, pear juice will do the trick.
August 23, 2008 at 2:10 pm #55640hellbenntKeymasterI want to get all mushy gushy sympathetic epathetic with/for you but only have a second (that poptart sounds great!)
so here goes: maybe you could find a Int’l Board Certified Lactation Consultant to help? I know nothing about all of this but maybe there’s something to be done so maybe you could nurse like one time a day? notto give false hope or anything- just popped in my head (must’ve been the poptart reference)HUGS!(& I AM a hippie, lOLOLOL ok not as much as I used to be…)August 23, 2008 at 2:46 pm #55649AnonymousInactiveJill-I will try the pear juice if nothing else just for a change in pace in scent..apple-poo is just AWFUL as you well know! I just changed two poop bombs within 20 minutes that were apple scented. Wait a minute-maybe I should stick with apples because if I change to pears then I’ll never be able to eat a pear again either!
Dear Hippie- You aren’t mushy-I’m right there with ya..I hate that we’re missing the boobie. I pumped last night while DH was feeding her and just drained myself as much as possible and then snuck in a little vitamin B(oobie) to put her back to sleep. Granted, she sounds congested today and I’m wondering if she did aspirate a bit of that. We follow up with the specialist in a week-I’m going to be asking if there is absolutely anything that we can do to bring back at least comfort nursing. Alas-I have already been the LC route. Thanks ladies! Now move to Texas so we can all go out for margaritas!August 23, 2008 at 4:37 pm #55655AnonymousInactivemmmm….Margaritas sound amazing! Frozen or not….(they say blender babes are just moms that make their own baby food- and while I am amazing at that too, I beg to differ!!) How far is TX from MD?? Darn you were so much closer to me when I lived in FL!!!
September 24, 2008 at 6:00 pm #57079AnonymousInactiveI feel for you…it’s so hard to exclusively pump. I had to do it for 5 days and really missed it. To keep up your supply…could you rent a hospital grade pump? I swear by that thing.. I used Medela’s Symphony. Or maybe even Medela’s new Freestyle pump would be a worthwhile purchase(?)
and like Laura mentioned…would it be okay if you BF once a day?
Good luck…and congrats on getting some good answers about Bberry–September 27, 2008 at 11:32 am #57146AnonymousInactiveHey Colleen-gpoing on exclusively pumping for about a mth now-awful! I actually own 2 pumps, one of them being the freestyle. While i do really like that pump, there just really is no substitute for good ole little baby lips for keeping your supply up. I’ve tried all of the homeopathic stuff and other than making me smell yucky, it didn’t do anything. My OB/Gyn gave me a ‘script for bromocriptine but our ped doesn’t feel good about that drug and doesn’t want me on it. We go back for another swallow study in a few weeks and while I think we have improved, I don’t think it will be enough to stop thickening her food. 🙁
But thank you all for the kind advice!September 27, 2008 at 12:21 pm #57147AnonymousInactiveShellie–It’s so good that you’ve been seeing improvement! i totally agree–the baby really sucks it out—plus the pumping/then feeding is such hard work. other things my milk supply likes are: fenugreek capsules (3 3xday), and maxi-milk tincture by Mountain Meadow herbs.
hang in there. you deserve a margarita!September 27, 2008 at 2:16 pm #57149AnonymousInactiveI just wanted to add that oatmeal always helps my supply a lot… not sure if you’ve tried that. I’ve also used fenugreek & blessed thistle.
