Why does this have to happen on a Saturday?
Andrew is 11 weeks old with reflux. He was first on Zantac, but it stopped working. We were switched to Prilosec which has been working. He is on Alimentum formula.
Someone told me the compounded Prilosec needs to be made in 14 day doses because the effectiveness wears off after that, but ours was made in a month’s dose.
We saw the GI this past week and he advised us to start cereal in 2-3 bottles per day.
Today Andrew is refusing bottles. He has been fussy, and in the last few hours has been making the choking sound and puking. He had a cereal bottle this AM at 10 which he took (I think only because it is the Y nipple that comes out fast and gave him no chance to refuse it-and, I did not know he was not feeling well. He took a bottle at 6AM, but my husband neglected to tell me he choked and threw up after. I would not have done the cereal at 10, otherwise. I can hear the acid or stomach juices going up and down his esophagus, and he keeps swallowing.
He had silent reflux before, and he did not puke much like this. Please help me. What do we do? I have a call into our nurse’s line, but our regular pediatrician probably will just tell us to watch for dehydration? I don’t even know.
Anyone have any idea what is happening? Is it the Prilosec becoming ineffective? He starts daycare Monday. I can’t go back to work and leave him there like this!

I’m just curious as to the cereal? Did your husband try it at the 6 am feeding too? Or was the first one with you at 10? And is he on Alimentum because of MSPI? It’s possible that the cereal is not settling with him esepcially if he has any type of food intolerance (Dairy/soy etc.) My LO could not handle rice cereal until about 6 months, and he cannot have oatmeal cereal (he broke out in hives).Or it could be that your LO is having trouble with the Alimentum? Sometimes more sensitive babies need an elemental formula (Neocate, EleCare, Nutramigen AA) because they cannot handle the partially broken down milk protein chains that are still found in hydrolysate formulas like Alimentum and Nutramigen. Sometimes food intolerance can make reflux symptoms worse, as was the case for my guy.Let us know what the nurse/doc say.October 1, 2011 at 11:53 pm #69151AnonymousInactiveRachel_Neocate wrote: Laura (hellbent) may be able to help you with the reflux meds?

The nurse did not have much to say. She recommended loosening the diaper etc-stuff like that. She said based on symptoms he can wait until Monday to be seen, and if I noticed a change to take him to the emergency room.
He did take some more formula this afternoon/evening without vomiting, but he continued swallowing and gulping all day. Every now and then he would cry out, but I was happy he took fluids.
My husband did not give him cereal. I gave him the first and only cereal bottle today at 10AM. I am stopping the cereal and calling the GI on Monday. I am wondering if we need a new dose of the Prilosec made. He had been doing well on it since we started it. I even wondered if he was getting better and may no longer have the reflux! The GI did mention the next step may be Elecare formula so I will hopefully get some info Monday.
Of course, I go back to work Monday so this is going to be interesting to manage. He is supposed to start daycare, but there is no way I can send him like this. He chokes, and he will be the 8th baby in the room with 2 teachers. I cannot trust he will receive the special care he needs. I am very fortunate to have found a friend who will come stay at my house with him (I work from home but cannot do my job and watch him at the same time) for the next week or two until we (hopefully) get him feeling better again. I am just hoping daycare will hold my spot.
It has been a rough, emotional day!
