Hello Everyone! I need serious help! My son started with his reflux problem at 2 weeks old….So they put him on prilosec….well at first it helped with bringing down the amount of spit up after each meal and taking away the pain. So I thought great problem solved along with adding rice to his formula. Now please also know I double checked to make sure it wasnt the formula causing this.Plus put him at a 45 degree angle while he rests. Well as of 2 weeks the medicine started to not work anymore. The spiting up picked back up again…then his wheezing started kicking from it going up threw his nose so much..to now where he just goes without sleep for hours at a time as if he has insomnia. Of course then I dont sleep. He is in obvious pain with grunting in his sleep and arching his back while feeding and during burping, along with endless crying. I dont know what to do. I am going INSANE! I have also tried the mylanta and it works but for only short times. Today I went in and they put him on reglan….but as of so far the first 2 doses are not working…and he is still awake! I dont know what to do. I am wondering about other ideas to make him more comfortable…and what is the best medicine. I know its different for everyone…but there has to be one the works good for most cases. Anyways….any help would be really appreciated. Thanks!!
April 28, 2008 at 11:52 am #50943AnonymousInactiveIs it a compound? If so, what’s his dose and how is it made. Does it have flavouring? It shouldn’t. If made properly, it’s typically only stable for 2 week doses. Also, maybe the dose needs an increase. You might want to try zegerid or the prevacid solutabs. Check out http://www.marci-kids.com for info about dosing. If you haven’t already, I’d do some reading about reglan. If he doesn’t need it, you might want to try other options first. It can (though doesn’t always) have some side effects, so read up first to make an informed decision.

They told me to give him .05cc of the reglan every 6 hours. The prilosec he was taking every 12 hours..of 2.3cc…and that stuff I had to mix with koolaid for it to go down it was so nasty. The reglan has cherry flavor to it. I have been tring to ask about the disoveable tabs of prevacid…but they keep giving and telling to try these other medicines. He is only 2 months old now and because of of this his is not sleeping at all…maybe an hour here and an hour there..till he is just so exhuasted he knocks himself out…and the docs are telling me this is sometimes normal for babies. I will look into more info on the medicine though!!
April 28, 2008 at 2:03 pm #50950AnonymousInactiveI’m new at this too but you seem to have a similar experience as we did.
Our ped started w/ reglan, then zantac, a then compound prilosec. Like you, the prilosec worked for about 5 days then quit working. We were having to give her so much (like 5ml 2x/day, equiv to about 20mg/day) that is was very hard to give due to the nasty taste. The prevacid medication is encased in tiny capsules so they never taste the nastiness.
So we told the ped that she was spitting out most of the prilosec compound and wanted something easier to administer. You’ll have to call every day and beg for the prevacid, not sure why. Our Ped was ok w/ the 1-15mg per day but just now agreed to let us try 30mg/day because I wouldn’t stop calling. But if this doens’t make her 90% better they want to send her to a specialist. And really, she is not so bad as I have heard you say and others here. She is mainly just miserable but can be comforted by a warm bath or constant stimulation w/ lights, sounds, etc, etc, but she doesn’t sleep good w/o the prevacid. She doesn’t have the apnea like a lot have said here so it is not considered as severe.
but the main thing you have to do is keep bugging your Ped every day for the 30mg of prevacid. Tell her you’ve been in contact w/ a specialist (you can email Dr. Phillips so you won’t be a liar) and he has recommended 15mg 2x/day. Tell her he claims it is the safest treatment and that you only need to try it for maybe 10 days and then you’ll know for sure.April 28, 2008 at 5:51 pm #50953AnonymousInactiveOh am I going to continue bugging them to get the prevacid solutabs cause all I have heard was that it works wonders. The reglan i am concerned with the side effects. And my son does have the apnea going on…plus with the spitting up through his nose..and it happens with him sleeping in an up right position…which with any mother scares me to death. I would love to take him to see a specialist cause that is what he needs. But I am at a disadvantage because I am military and I am over seas right now and the doctors here dont know much about gerd let alone have a specialist or even the proper tests. But i will continue to demand for the prevacid cause I havent heard anything about about that medicine except with zantac, prilosec, and reglan I have heard alot of bad with these medicines. And its funny you mention about the docs and them with the prevacid…cause I have mentioned it and they dodge me buy changing the topic and saying he is a happy spitter or something. Its very aggravating as a mom and having a doc tell you dont know anything ..even though you are the parent and with your child 24/7.
