Johnny threw up 3 consecutive feedings today. He was like this a couple days ago & basically throws up everyday. He completely rejects bottle & I have to spoon feed him EVERY feeding. It’s so slow and long!!! And just when I spend one hour trying to get 2oz of highcal formula down, he throws everything up! Urhhh… I want to scream on top of my lung (it’s funny because it should be my little one screaming from the pain, but guess what? he is worn out and sleeping soundly now)! Johnny is on 2mlx2 Zantac & Mylanta as needed. He doesn’t seem to be in pain too much and sleeps very well, but he won’t take bottle at all! (I should corret this because he would take bottle as long as what’s inside is not formula & believe me, I have tried all kinds of formula). I think his problem is the uncontrollable vomiting. I wouldn’t mind spending hours spoon feeding him, or if he has slient reflux and would get fussy all the time, as long as he can keep his food down! He just can’t!!! He is usually not a grumpy eater (from spoon), but he throws up a lot!!! I try everything to make him eat (will talk about this some other day) & spend hours feeding him. It’s just so frustrating he throws it all up! We tried Reglan, crazy stuff, will NEVER want that near Johnny again. I heard Molitium is actually very safe but not available in the US. My American ped is really against Molitium and would like to put Johnny on Reglan again rather than Molitium. I willl call her tomorrow & try to talk her into referring us to see German doctors, who might be willing/able to prescribe the medicine. My quesion is, does anyone here have any experience using Molitium? Does it work? Is there any other medicine that can stop Johnny from vomiting??? I just can’t take this anymore!!! Help!!!
February 7, 2006 at 10:13 pm #1078AnonymousInactiveunless he has delayed gastric emptying that is causing him to throw up—-there isn’t going to be much you can do about it. you are likely to make him more comfortable if you get him on a PPI. i kind of think zantac is worthless.
February 7, 2006 at 10:26 pm #1081AnonymousInactiveHave you tried thickening? We had the same prob with the Neocate and Jack would spit up everything. Now with the rice added he doesnt. plus I think it makes it sweeter too.
February 8, 2006 at 3:25 am #1091AnonymousInactiveMotilium is supposed to be really safe – but many American doctors tell you it is not because the FDA has not approved it. It is actually really mild and now that Matthew throws up non-stop it is what we are giving him. Not only that, but when an adult is throwing up, they get motilium pills… i have had them so many times and i have never felt anything… problem is it is really mild and may or may not notice anything.
I would think that what is most important now is to find out WHY he is throwing up so much — i think he was not gaining weight properly or very slowly? Or i am wrong? If he is not gaining weight or too slow, you need to find out what is going on. If he is OK then maybe he is throwing up a lot but getting all the food he needs?
– he could just have an immature digestive system — but he is already 6 months (and shares birthdays with Eden and Marisa!) and i think you should have noticed an improvement by now – if this is the cause then there may not be much you can do although something like Motilium will help the stomach empty faster and he will not throw up that much. Also a formula like Alimentum maybe which is really easy to digest, so his body can digest quicker and keep more nutrients down maybe — they can check with endo maybe to see if the cardias is closing properluy for his age
– he could have delayed gastric emptying and then, yes, you will need a drug i think… you can start with Motilium, erythromicin (It is an antibiotic that has the side effect of increasing emptying), bethanecol (I THINK), then go to something like Reglan (which does help some babies) or there is also Propulsid (regulated, so you need all types of tests etc) – i would ask for an emptying scan where they see if your baby has this
– he could have a hernia or something abnormal in esophagus or in duodenum – again, this could be checked with endo possibly
– he could be reacting to the formula or somethign else — have you tried a hypoallergenic formula? Maybe it is worth giving it a shot… be on it a few days and see what happens – they could also check with biopsy (endo) to see if there are any EOS cells
Has he always been like this? If you do not think that he is in pain, then maybe a PPI is not the answer but if you think he is, i would push for one…if he has only been like this lately, could he have some type of stomach flu or something?
February 8, 2006 at 9:42 am #1104AnonymousInactiveI am sorry that you are going through this right now! That is alot to deal with. Like Thais mentioned by 6 months old things in normal reflux should have settled down. I think maybe you need to get some tests done (endoscopy and biopsies) to see what is causing this. Also he may benefit from a good ppi. I do see that you have prilosec on your siggy but it was not mentioned in your post. Maybe you could try a new ppi and that will help with the bottle aversion but i really don’t know! I hope that you get some help with this (something new and different than has been tried previously) and it all will be under control soon.
February 8, 2006 at 11:33 am #1120AnonymousInactiveJust a couple of thoughts .. . have you had him examined for any throat/tounge/mouth issues? I would try a hypo formula immediately .. .strangely enough, young ones can sort of sense when something is not going to sit right with them and even though it sounds odd maybe he already knows he can’t tolerate the formula hes getting? Spoon feeding is definitely not a normal necessity and poor you for having to do it .. .what is your doctor offering for advice or action?
Try the formula switch and see what happens. . .it can’t hurt and it may help tremendously with the spitting up and bottle refusal.
Keep us updated ~Liz
February 8, 2006 at 12:45 pm #1125AnonymousInactiveThank you all so much for the input! Johnny is on Alimentum, which did stop him from frequent vomiting at the beginning. I really don’t know why he vomits so much these days. The doctor examined him today and was pretty sure he does not have a bug or anything like that. I did thicken his formula with rice cereal, and it made him threw up big time! Because of his small intake from spoon, I feed him concentrated formula in hope that he get more calories. Luckily he is willing to take water from bottle and syringe, so it’s not difficult for me to get good amount of water in him to dilute the formula afterwards, although I always worry that he doesn’t take enough water & the concentrated formula is going to overload his kidneys. The doctor doesn’t like the idea but has to let me do it because it’s so far the best way working. She also said that if Johnny does not take bottle at all, I can do without it. I also got the referral from the doctor to see a German GI pediatrician here. Hopefully we will be able to see the doctor tomorrow after completing the paperwork. Will keep you all updated.
February 8, 2006 at 1:32 pm #1138AnonymousInactiveHey – just wanted to ask out of curiosity – why the reglan and how long has he been on it? Sometimes too much of a good thing can cause more issues. Reglan can cause stomach cramping and other serious side effects that may or may not make him want to eat since his tummy might be in distress? The other thing is if the Aliment. worked so well, would your pedi be good about trying to up him to Neocate. It could be that the trace amounts of milk proteins in Aliment. are still causing issues.

ps – I know you don’t have much of a choice and your trying to get water in afterwards but concentrated formula can cause constipation . .. be on the look out.
February 8, 2006 at 3:18 pm #1157AnonymousInactiveHope things get better for you real soon. I don’t know much about formulas and meds, but I wanted to suggest that if he takes formula well from a spoon, maybe he would try to take it from a cup. It may not help with throwing up, but if he would take it that way, you wouldn’t have to spend hours feeding him. Sometimes, just an open cup held up where they can take small sips works. It isn’t the fastest method, either, because they can only take small sips, but it has to beat a spoon. Best of luck, Glor
