Okay, we really need to get a happy tears smiley on here. I don’t know what changed the last week or two, but Bryce has been eating solids!! He’s still only eating a very small amount, but it’s improved SO much! It used to be he could only eat maybe 2 or 3 teeny tiny bites before he gagged and usually threw up. Now he’s been eating around 10 good sized bites – without gagging (much)!!! (He still won’t take it very willingly, but hopefully that will improve with practice).
Now here’s the real shocker. My husband came in last night and told me he gave Bryce one of those little Gerber puffs and he ate it! I about died of shock. I’ve never even considered giving him anything but stage one purees because so far he can’t handle any textures whatsoever – not even the teeniest crumb without gagging and throwing up. So I went in and watched Josh give him another one. Bryce took it, put it in his mouth, chewed it up and swallowed it!!! He ended up eating like 12 more and only gagged once or twice, but didn’t spit up! It was almost comical because I’ve never seen Bryce crunch anything up like that.
Anyway, just thought I’d share. I hope things are going to continue improving & it’s not just a fluke.
March 2, 2007 at 1:26 pm #26368AnonymousInactiveGood job, Bryce!
That’s the way it started with Myles, too. At his 12 month check up his doc was mortified that he still could not eat puffs or cheerios. He gagged on anthing that got past his lips. Finally at 13 or 13.5 months he could finally eat puffs and I think by 14 months he was eating cheerios, and then it gradually just got better and better. By 15 or 16 months he could eat just about anything he wanted to.
I hope Bryce continues to improve like Myles did and that he will soon be eating all kinds of yummy foods.
I’m so happy for you!!
March 2, 2007 at 2:13 pm #26369AnonymousInactiveThat is so wonderful!!!! Way to go Bryce!!!1 Before you know it, he is going to be asking for a big juicy steak.
March 2, 2007 at 2:32 pm #26374AnonymousInactiveThat’s great and that is how we started too. Its like something just clicks and all of a sudden the figure out that they can eat solids. Good Job.
March 2, 2007 at 3:02 pm #26380AnonymousInactiveThat is so great!!! Horray for Brice!!

March 2, 2007 at 3:37 pm #26390AnonymousInactiveThat’s just so fabulous!!! That’s how it started with Hailey too. First a bite of puffs (which I used to have to break into quarters! so she wouldn’t gag), and things gradually started getting better.
I think watching your child eat and enjoy eating something is fun for any parent. But when your child has a feeding aversion, it often seems like a small miracle… like a little bit of normalcy. I felt so happy the first time Hailey was able to enjoy something orally without gagging and vomitting that I actually cried.
I can imagine the feeling is that much stronger when your child has a feeding tube.
I’m so so happy for you guys. We had a similar happening recently that I’ll post about in a different thread so as not to hijack.
I know that it’s a long road for kids with feeding aversions- I’ve just finally accepted this myself- but I’m so happy that Bryce has taken this step forward and I hope it’s the beginning of a cycle of progress for him.
March 2, 2007 at 4:17 pm #26398AnonymousInactiveThanks everyone. I liked reading all of your experiences. It gives me hope that maybe we’re going to finally start moving forward with Bryce’s eating.
Lori, you expressed the feeling perfectly. I cried too when I realized Bryce was actually eating something. It does feel like a bit of a miracle. You don’t realize how much you miss those “normal” baby things like munching puffs until you see it finally happen with your tube-fed baby.
Thanks again!
March 2, 2007 at 11:03 pm #26453AnonymousInactiveWay to go Bryce. What a wonderful day for the whole family. LOL about the steak!
March 8, 2007 at 1:25 pm #26955AnonymousInactiveHey Lori, you never did post about your experience that you mentioned in this thread. Or did I miss it?
March 8, 2007 at 1:44 pm #26959AnonymousInactivethats so great! i never experienced that much.. but when shane wouldnt take his bottles several times i almost had a heart attack! soo i couldnt only imagine how happy you are. i wanted to say that i showed my sister in law this post because she has been upset as well.. that her daughter is a year old and cant have anything besides purees as well! and she isnt even a reflux baby! soo this gave her hope that in a month or so that her daughter will start too!
but i am very happy for you and bryce!
March 8, 2007 at 1:56 pm #26964AnonymousInactiveNo, I didn’t. I’ll post in the feeding aversions section, so as not to hijack…. especially since it hasn’t been a good day. (Sarah had a bad seizure last night).

OMG i am so excited for you… i have been there and it is a wonderful place to be, isn;t it… it gives you hope and it is an amazing reward for all your hard work — SO CONGRATS to both of you!!
Matthew still does not handle the puffs that well but i think he does not like them… will you ask your therapist about the veggie stix? They help with lateralisation and I think they dissolve better than the puffs
I am so excited for you!!
March 8, 2007 at 2:25 pm #26973AnonymousInactiveOh, I’m so sorry Lori. Don’t feel like you need to post anything! I had no idea. Is Sarah doing okay now?
March 8, 2007 at 2:27 pm #26974AnonymousInactiveThanks Thais!
I’ll definitely try the veggie stix! We showed our therapist how Bryce can eat the puffs on Monday, and she was so surprised and impressed. My husband also bought some of those gerber graduates freeze dried fruits last night. They don’t seem to dissolve as well as the puffs, but Bryce did okay with them.
I’ll have to try the veggie stix now. I’m so excited that he’s starting to be able to try new things finally!
March 8, 2007 at 2:52 pm #26977AnonymousInactiveWe also like veggie stix around here. And cheezies have been a hit as well b/c she can hold it and it kind of melts in her mouth. We also didn’t really have success with the freeze dried fruit. It never really dissolved.
