i broke down..and i gave him goat yogurt tonight. i decided the other day to take ALL dairy and soy out of his diet and see if his sleep improves. i bought some yogurt for back up just incase i couldnt do it. and i gave in. ITS SOOO HARD to make sure he gets the right amount of fats without dairy/soy. and i got scared because he wouldnt eat his pasta w/olive oil.. and so i gave up.
i am soo upset.. i dont know how to do it!
June 11, 2007 at 7:53 pm #36345AnonymousInactiveOh, Lauren! Don’t beat yourself up!!! It is so rough trying to find the right foods! Addy is still on Neocate supplements since I can’t figure out how to get her to eat good, nutritious foods to meet her needs! Good luck and it will get easier!
June 11, 2007 at 7:57 pm #36347AnonymousInactiveDon’t beat yourself up! You are a GREAT Mommy!!! It’s very hard to change the diet, so hang in there!
Forgive me if you have done this already as I am behind on posts, but have you seen an ENT? Dylan’s sleep did not improve until we got his tonsils/adenoids removed. He had 7 – 12 respiratory arousals an hour during the sleep study. You might be able to see if the restless sleep is due to enlarged tonsils/adenoids?
Just a thought. Hang in there!!!
June 11, 2007 at 8:03 pm #36349AnonymousInactiveOh Lauren, it’s OK!!! You are a great mommy and Shane is lucky to have you!!!
I had a total A-HA moment when I read Ann Marie’s post….have you ever looked into an ENT??? Maybe THAT is the mystery clue???? Hmmmm
June 11, 2007 at 8:32 pm #36357AnonymousInactiveAn ent sounds like a great idea. I hadn’t thought of that either. Of course, I have no idea what an ent is, but looking into the tonsil thing might be a good idea.
June 11, 2007 at 8:56 pm #36369AnonymousInactiveyeah, his ped. said “oh no thats no it” when i suggested it! made me think i am ridiculous! hmm.. do i need a refearal??
June 11, 2007 at 9:02 pm #36371AnonymousInactiveAlexis was the same way with sleep, she would also snore really loud. We had her adenoids and tonsils removed when she was 22 months not only due to recurrent strep but due to sleeping problems. You only need a referral if you have an HMO, POS, or a EPO or something like that, they keep on renaming these insurances. So it really depends on your insurance. Is your peds MD willing to do a sleep study? They actually might be the first step prior to ENT. Some Peds MDs are willing to order the test and if that comes back abnormal then they typically will make the referral.
By the way, don’t beat yourself up, you are a great Mommy! Taylor was skin tested when she was 5 months old for allergies and it came back postive for milk, I thought the Allergist would retest her at 1 y/o but he said we should just slowly try to introduce milk to see if there is a reaction since he said that is the best way of telling, she has no risk for anaphylaxis reactions so give it a shot, since there is a lot of false negatives with skin testing. So I started with a little yo-baby starting at 1 y/o and now I have her on 2oz of Whole Milk and 2oz of RCF formula trying to wean off the RCF to see if there is any difference. So far so good! So really don’t beat yourself up, it is worth just trying it out.

June 11, 2007 at 9:10 pm #36376AnonymousInactiveum.. whats a ped’s md? i am sorry i know i think that sounds stupid. i just cant think of it.. medical doctor? . he is a jerk about the whole sleeping thing.. i guess i will call an ENT myself?
and this is the situation with my ped’s office. i call and the receptionist answers.. andl lets say i ask if my ped will refear an ENT right? than they will have the nurse call back.. than i have to wait forever for the ped. And i cant just make an appointment to talk to him.. cuz he is so booked!! if shane is sick he sees whoever is available. is that how it is other places? soo its hard to really ever talk to him! and his 1 yr. visit isnt until july 3rd. would ya’ll wait or put a call in? i feel like he is going to dismiss me because he already said” oh no thats not it” .. a while back.
June 11, 2007 at 9:17 pm #36379AnonymousInactiveAnd ENT is ear, nose and throat doc…if someone already answered that, just ignore me…I am in a hurry to get to bed tonight after a rough day with Addy (and yes, its only 8:17 pm!!!!!!!!!!) Awful, I know!
June 11, 2007 at 11:46 pm #36400AnonymousInactivePeds MD- just a Pediatrician and your right MD is medical doctor. I guess I am just use to typing in Peds MD or Peds GI or Peds ENT. For awhile we were seeing a general ENT, he sees patients of all ages, the with Taylor’s ongoing throat problems, mom’s on the forum were suggesting I go see a Pediatric ENT for a second opinion. Which I did take Taylor and I’m definitely much happier.
June 12, 2007 at 12:42 am #36402AnonymousInactiveI don’t think it would be a bad idea to just call the ENT docs yourself. Your doc has to listen to you if you insist. Trust me… we have a GREAT pediatrician who is totally on my side and he has given me comments like “oh it’s not that”… if I insist, he just orders the test and we have a great relationship. I think that may just be the way doctors are. Remember, you are the most important member of your child’s team. So if you suspect there is a problem with her throat, insist on getting it checked out. Our pedi has rolled his eyes at me when I insisted on testing Quinn. Most of our tests have come back negative, but it gave me piece of mind to know that I had ruled out that possiblity.
I don’t think your pediatrician would be offended if you just set yourself an appointment nor do I think he would be if you insisted on him ordering it. Our pediatcician didn’t think Q needed a GI doctor, when i just called to set up an appointment anyways, it turns out that our world would be upside down without a GI team. And he knows he was wrong… but he is still a great doctor. We have bumped heads a few times, but that’s how it is with these doctors. They live and learn too… which is why they PRACTICE medicine… right?
Go for it… call ENT or insist to have him seen by them. You won’t regret it.
Good luck to you. It’s ok to give in every once in a while… it’s so hard having a reflux kiddo. You just want them to be better.

June 12, 2007 at 5:20 am #36407AnonymousInactiveIf I had a penny for every time a Dr. said to me “oh it’s not that….” I could pay for the infant reflux reunion……
Trust your gut, or at least rule it out so you don’t have to doubt that.
Also, sometimes the tonsils and adenoids can shrink if he has just taken an antibiotic, so sometimes it is just the point in time when they look..
Good Luck and let us know what happens…..
June 12, 2007 at 9:38 am #36428AnonymousInactivethanks everyone.
i actually wrote a letter to his ped. and i am having my husband fax it in today. i updated him on shanes issues.. and asked to have a sleep study done. i figured it will cover everything easier. also to have a phprobe done at the same time to see if its reflux or whatever else going on.
does this make sense?
i didnt send it in yet.
June 12, 2007 at 12:09 pm #36445AnonymousInactiveHERES MY LETTER.. DOES IT SOUND O.K? I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT I DONT COME ACROSS WRONG. I AM SO NEW AT THIS STUFF!! MY HUSBAND IS SUPPOSED TO BE RE-READING IT AND FAXING IT OVER FOR ME NOW. THANKS ANYONE FOR READING IT! I PRAY THAT THIS WILL GET US IN!!
Dr. T,
I thought this would be the easiest way of getting in touch with you, and easier for the nurses as well! I wanted to update you on Shane’s situation.
His sleeping has gotten much worse. He is now moving every 2- 5 minutes all night long. Sometimes it is even several times in one minute. His movements look as if he is being attacked! I would really like to do a Sleep Study on him. I am not sure about the procedure in doing so, and would love your help in getting us in. At this point I think its either reflux or a type of sleep apnea disturbing his sleep so frequently. This is why I think the Sleep Study would be beneficial plus a possible PhProbe to monitor his reflux and his movements. What I am most concerned about is that since its getting worse, he is now waking up still tired in the morning, and extremely tired and irritable during the day.
As for his allergist appointment; The results showed a “slight” allergy to dairy and eggs. I put him on Goat and Rice milk. His eczema actually cleared up, but his sleeping has not improved. (The allergist actually suggested soy, but I prefer to keep his diet soy free as much as possible, and I know there is a good percentage that dairy allergies coincide with soy ones.) Currently I took the Goat’s milk out of his diet and I am just doing Rice milk in hopes of seeing a difference with his sleep. I know I probably need a pediatric nutritionist in helping me meet his nutritional requirements since I am not doing dairy/soy. So, if there is one you recommend I would love to know.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and if you could get back to me regarding the sleep testing A.S.A.P that would be great. You can reach me @ 803-0890.
Thanks again!
