Hi everyone! I’m new here, mama to two beautiful girls ages 2.5 years and 14 weeks. Our youngest daughter was diagnosed with silent reflux at about 10 days old. We tried Zantac for two and half weeks which seemed to do absolutely nothing, had our ped tell us that if Zantac didn’t work that meant our baby didn’t have reflux after all, did our research, found a new ped and got our girl started on Prilosec. The Prilosec worked wonders and she transformed from a very sad baby who was hurting all the time into a girly who ate and slept well and was generally very happy.
At around 6 weeks she began having some reflux symptoms again and we had her weighed and had the dose upped. Everything was great since then until about a week ago. She started having some reflux symptoms again so I called the ped and went in to get her weighed again. The ped upped the dose to match her current weight and I went home thinking she would improve in a few days. Well, it’s been 3 days and while I know it could take a bit longer, she has not just not improved yet, she’s actually doing a lot worse each day. She has been absolutely miserable part of yesterday and most of today, and I haven’t seen her have it so badly since before she got started on the right medication. The only other time we upped the dose it seemed to help some immediately and took full effect in a few days, and she definitely didn’t feel worse before it got better. So my question is, how long can it take for an upped dose of Prilosec to take effect? And is it normal for her symptoms to get worse after upping the dose before they get better? She’s currently 12 lbs 9 oz and taking 6mg once a day in a solution. From what the ped told and from what I’ve read I understand the dose is on the lower end of the spectrum but she did great on just under 4mg once a day up until a week ago (for weight 10 lbs 10 oz from when she was 6 weeks old) so it seems upping it by this much should at least help a little.Thank you so much for any answers or advice you can give me! I’m so sad watching her feel so horrible again and just hoping so much the new dose will start to make a difference soon!December 4, 2011 at 4:29 pm #69507hellbenntKeymasterit shouldn’t take so long…
how are poops?*mucous in poop; mucous can look like: snot, jelly, cottage cheese, stringy like the inside of a banana
*foul-smelling poop
*stinky, foul-smelling painful gas
*straining and grunting to poop and, when baby finally does poop, it’s soft
do you have any zantac left? I’d give it, too, 4 hrs from prilosec until you get prilosec dose figured out- how much does she weigh? I can help you figure out proper zantac dosePrevacid 101:

She’s solely breastfed and it’s not normally so smelly. The first few weeks she grunted all the time and when she’d finally poop it’d be soft, just like you describe, but she hasn’t done that in quite some time. What could this mean? The ped seems to think it’s normal. I forgot to mention in my original post that in the very beginning I cut out all dairy for 2 weeks but this didn’t seem to make any difference, whereas the Prilosec did, so the ped figured it wasn’t milk protein allergy.
I thought it wasn’t supposed to take this long either. The way she’s suffering today is almost as though she’s on no medication at all. I don’t get how it could go from her doing so well on her old dose, to this new higher dose seemingly not having any effect at all. It’s even got me wondering if the pharmacy messed up her prescription, since we had it refilled Nov. 21 and things started going downhill a few days later… but that seems unlikely. I’m just grasping at straws I guess, I just want so badly for my baby to feel better!Thank you very much for your reply!!December 4, 2011 at 7:15 pm #69509hellbenntKeymasterthere’s a lot to read…lol…
I wouldn’t be surprised if the meds aren’t effective. Unfortunately you would not be the first oneplease read through Prevacid 101…personally, I’d TELL dr you need RX for zegerid 40mg packets- long story short, this is a way to make an EFFECTIVE compound & you don’t have to time around meals…zegerid mixing:

also: here’s some more light reading for youReasons a breastfeeding mother might think her baby is reacting to something in her milk:
*poop that is not ‘normal’ mustardy yellow, seedy breastfed baby poop
*mucous in poop; mucous can look like: snot, jelly, cottage cheese, stringy like the inside of a banana
*foul-smelling poop
*stinky, foul-smelling painful gas
*straining and grunting to poop and, when baby finally does poop, it’s soft
the TED takes two weeks and then you start adding foods in to see what you CAN eat.
Research all you can! You are your baby’s best advocate!

I don’t think it’s the dose wearing off as the day goes on, as we give it to her around 4pm every day and this evening she’s been miserable. She definitely seemed overtired, though, so that could be it. But then again she’s been overtired before and while it would make her cry, it’s never made her arch and scream while she’s been on the Prilosec. Also – I didn’t think this would affect her reflux, but her toddler sister had a stomach bug last week Monday and Tuesday. I was worried Emma, our baby girl, would get it too, but as she never had a fever I thought she didn’t get it… maybe that could’ve triggered her reflux to get worse again? But then her sister being sick was over a week ago, and Emma’s reflux has only gotten this bad over the weekend – starting to get worse last week but still getting worse every day it seems.
