We have been on this diet for almost 2 weeks now and dd has greatly improved, no more blood in stool, etc. My question is how long do you have to wait to bf again after eating dairy/soy?
I mean like alchohol is usually out of your milk in 2 hours. How long if you eat something you’re not supposed to?I’m asking because while I am confident I can do this diet for long term, there are 2 events that only happen once a year coming up and I really want to be able to eat at them. It would only be for 1 meal for the whole day and at breakfast, so I will nurse her before we go. Then give her bottled or frozen dairy/soy free bm that I’ve been storing. But wasn’t sure how long I needed to do that for. Unless its like another 2 weeks again because thats how long it took her to get on track the first time.Any help would be appreciated.February 17, 2010 at 3:11 pm #65814AnonymousInactiveIn my extensive (unfortunately – ugh) experience, in general, something you ate will enter your breastmilk within 2-3 hrs. For most things it will be OUT of your breastmilk (& baby’s system) within 4 days (but usually not any sooner than 3 days). For some of the more troublesome proteins (ie: milk/soy) some ppl say 2 wks but for me it was still about 4 days for those as well (& my son was/is VERY sensitive)…as long as you don’t eat a ton of dairy/soy @ one sitting.
I know this isn’t the answer you want to hear, BUT if I were you I would eat what you want for those meals @ the 2 events that you want to. I did this occasionally with my 2nd son (I was on very strict diet for a long time) & though the proteins definitely affected him it wasn’t nearly as severe as you might expect… especially if you db is a bit older – how old is your LO?
Hang in there!
February 17, 2010 at 3:41 pm #65816AnonymousInactiveI have often wondered this myself…
I am on a very strict TED; so far he doesn’t seem to tolerate protein at all, among other things. Everyonce in a while (well, more often these days!) I crave some sort of protein (I “jokingly” told my dh that I would throw him out of the car if it meant I could have a bite of the burger he was eating-poor guy!) and I would REALLY love a cup of decaf w/ some non-dairy (but really is dairy-casein) creamer but have been too afraid to chance it.He has been so happy and sleeping really well, I hate to rock the boat, you know?!February 17, 2010 at 3:57 pm #65817AnonymousInactiveEvan didn’t tolerate protein @ all for a long time. I was afraid that Tate was the same way but I was actually able to add in pork over the weekend (I opted to try pork b/c Evan is intolerant still to turkey & chicken so I’m trying to do things similar to him).
Anyway, you could try coffee w/ sugar & rice milk (if he’s tolerating rice). I did this once Evan tolerated rice through my diet (around 10 mths old) & that cup of coffee made me so happy :).
What proteins have you tried adding in? What are the consequences? How long do you give it before ‘giving up’?
Hang in there!
ETA…sorry, just saw he’s not tolerating rice… you could try hemp milk or coconut milk – all great options in our house!erinntx2010-02-17 15:58:42
February 17, 2010 at 4:54 pm #65818AnonymousInactiveI was eating a lot of turkey (and rice) when I first started TED, and his diapers were dark green and mucasy. When I cut those out, the diapers cleared up and he started sleeping more consistently during the night and naps got better. Anytime I try to add turkey, beef, pork, or chicken, he gets the dark green diapers, seems constipated, and it throws him off his normal pooping schedule (ususally first thing in the morning after “BK”.) I can’t stand lamb, so I haven’t tried that. And I only give it one try, like I ate beef last week, and the next evening he finally pooped dark green, so I didn’t try it again.
I also tried sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds as a snack and the sunflower seemed to be OK, but I just tried the pumpkin seeds for the past few days and he has been waking up at night. Not bad, just more waking than he was doing. Usually if I give him gas drops, he goes right back to sleep.I tried coconut milk about a month ago- DISASTER! It didn’t sit well with me, so I was not suprised that he was screaming that eveing and didn’t sleep at all. I just tried the hemp milk (a splash in my oatmeal- he doesn’t have a problem with that) and it seemed OK as well. As I said, I am literally afraid to try too much of anything b/c I am so scared to cause him anymore pain than he already has had.Maybe some digestive enzymes for me would help? I got them, but again, was hesitant to keep using them b/c he seemed to get fussy when I first tried them. I got the brand you recommened in another post…Thanks for your input- I consider you the “expert” in this area!Congratulations on Tate- his picture is beautiful!February 17, 2010 at 5:41 pm #65820AnonymousInactiveerinntx wrote: In my extensive (unfortunately – ugh) experience, in general, something you ate will enter your breastmilk within 2-3 hrs. She’s only 10 weeks. We didn’t realize there was a problem until her 2 month checkup. She started off totally normal but was fussy in the evenings for a couple hours. Then the poop started changing after the first month. She’s definitely not fussy anymore and if she is only for 5 min.I would just feel horrible for causing her more discomfort, but even when she was fussy she was only fussy, she didn’t scream and cry horribly.February 18, 2010 at 2:38 pm #65825AnonymousInactivehelpforshermie-
Your ds sounds so much like my Evan. His diapers were green & mucousy pre-TED but once I started traditional TED they got SO MUCH WORSE. I finally realized he was reacting to rice, turkey & pears (he’s still intolerant to turkey & pears).
When he reacts to something new you try to add in does he get the stinky gas? Or just the diapers change… I ask b/c he could have a bad day/diaper & not really be reacting to something in your diet (as long as there’s no stinky gas to go along). If he’s not having stinky gas (& even if he’s only having a little) I would give it @ least 2 days of eating the item 2x/day before calling it a ‘fail’.
I would definitely add in the enzymes. I highly highly doubt they will affect him as they are very ‘safe’. I gave them to Evan sometimes (in water) before he started solids… & then definitely when he started solids (& still do them). Also, are you doing a probiotic for him?
I know it’s so hard & confusing but hang in there.

It definitely does sound like she has a ‘mild’ case of intolerances (though I’m sure it didn’t seem mild when she was fussy in the evenings). If you were eating totally normal (milk, soy, gluten, etc) for the 1st 2 mths & she wasn’t totally miserable & no blood in her stool then I would certainly say that you are okay eating what you want @ those 2 events… WITHOUT guilt :).
February 18, 2010 at 3:26 pm #65830AnonymousInactiveDefinitely on the mild side if I had to say. We wouldn’t have even realized there could be anything going on until my friend pointed out the mucousy diaper when she changed her. Her son was the same way as a baby.
I’m still going to give her the safe pumped milk for at least 24 hours, but hopefully it won’t be too bad then. Thanks. And I guess that would also answer my next question about the shared equipment. As long as the food is free of dairy/soy is it ok for us to have something that was on shared equipment? And I noticed above that you suggested digestive enzymes, I’m assuming that means they’re ok for breastfeeding? I take them sometimes to offset gallbladder issues that I have, but since I’ve been avoiding almost everything it hasn’t been a problem lately. Just didn’t know if I could take them or not.Thank you for your help.February 18, 2010 at 3:59 pm #65832AnonymousInactiveThanks again Erin. You are such a big help! He rarely has stinky gas, only if it’s been a while since he pooped. And once he goes, no more stinky gas. I have been going stictly off the diapers; color and consistency.
How did you do the digestive enzymes in water; how much water with a whoel capsule? Can you do them in breastmilk or formula?I am using probiotics, also the ones you recommended and I def think they have helped.Thank you thank you thank you! I truly appreciate your advice as well as all the wonderful advice and support I get from the amazing moms here!February 18, 2010 at 9:07 pm #65836AnonymousInactiveimdgrrl-
Yes, I would still give the pumped milk… & I wouldn’t think the minimal proteins from 1-2 meals will be that big of a deal.
Yes, I would be okay w/ shared equipment. I eat stuff from shared equipment & let Evan eat stuff too (for the most part).
I don’t know if all digestive enzymes are okay but the brand I suggest are. Here’s the info…
Here are the digestive enzymes. I take 2-3 with each meal & snack (to try & break down the proteins that I eat so they enter my breastmilk broken down).

Hmmm… (re:stinky gas) that’s interesting. I’ve noticed that Tate has less stinky gas than Evan did (when he reacts to something) but it’s definitely there.
You can put enzymes in water or breastmilk (or formula)… just put it in like 1/2 a medicine cup’s worth (usually around 1/2 tsp or 5-8mL). I would suggest breastmilk over water b/c they taste AWFUL but either will work.
