Oops, I goofed trying to post this the first time. Sorry. Anyway, Does anybody out there have a little GERDling who is surviving on only an average of 15 ounces of breast milk or formula a day??? For the last week my five month old boy (REFLUX on Prevacid) will only eat and keep down an average of 15 ounces of his feedings each day. He refuses solid foods, but I do add some cereal to two of his bottles each day. I’m worried because he used to consume about 25 ounces per day and he kept a lot more of it down. For the last week he will only drink 2 or 3 ounces at each feeding and pukes most of it up. Twice a day on average he’ll keep down 4 ounces. My doctor says as long as he’s gaining, not to worry. O.K. But how long can he continue to thrive on so little food? Do any of you have babies who get by with so little? Please let me know. It may calm my fears. Thanks.

February 24, 2006 at 1:49 pm #2355AnonymousInactiveMy daughter is 9 months old and I can count the number of times we’ve gone above 18 oz on one hand. Most days we used to do between 14-16 oz and then she’d vomit one entire feed. She now takes no solids, and about 18 oz a day. I’m concerned, but no one else seems to be!
February 24, 2006 at 2:00 pm #2358AnonymousInactiveWe were at 15 oz of formula for a few months there and no solids. He still gained but is on the skinny side now. I try not to worry until he seems like it is bothering him. He just now started liking solid about a month ago but still doesn’t eat a “normal” amount. He also still vomits all day and all night.
February 24, 2006 at 2:30 pm #2365AnonymousInactiveEmma never ate a lot at once. She still only drinks an average of 4 oz at a time, every once in a while 5, and she is on solids but don’t eat a lot at once. At 5 months 15-20 oz was very normal for her. To tell you the truth It really didn’t bother me and I think it was b/c she was gaining. She was small and usually in the 10-15 percentile but she looked healthy. She spit up ALOT too. We never put her in clothes b/c of it. It all depends on how they feel when they eat and what your instincts are telling you. Just b/c they are gaining even though they are usually healthy doesn’t mean they aren’t hurting and that they don’t have reflux. Some babies don’t require alot of food, emma is a prime example and now she is around 19 pounds. What concerns me about your little one is is that he was eating 25 oz and he is now puking. How much med is he on? That can cause the decrease if he is hurting, if the dosage needs to be increased b/c of his weight. Could he possibly have a sickness of some kind? or could he be teething? Emma’s food intake dramatically drops when she is teething. Just some thoughts
February 24, 2006 at 2:39 pm #2366AnonymousInactivemy guy has always been on the low side for weight and fluid intake. He is breastfed so I don’t know for sure what he was/is getting but I know we are on the low side of normal. He is over a year now and eats solids like a mad man. If your baby is small, they require less (not substantially but less). I am not surprised he refuses solids at this age. Did you other babies eat this early? All of mine did better with solids after 6mths, though I certainly kept trying. Keep on eye on it. You should be going in for a well check soon. My last two have been low on the growth chart and had one feeding problem or another. It is so hard not to worry so I won’t tell you not to 😉 And that would be hypocritical of me since worry is all I do.
