Long story short…Today was the most horriable day! We had our appt. to the Allergist, he ordered blood to be drawn from the lab to test ds for “childhood allergies”, which apparently covers everything. The lab tried 2 different times to get the blood and each time ds was a mess and his veins kept collapsing. So I went back to the Drs. office to let him know they couldn’t get the blood and he threw his arms up in the air and said “what can I do” and walked away! I’ve been in tears ever since. I just feel so defeated and like no one wants to help us. Living in Miami where the majority of people Spanish doesn’t help. Oh ya, and I got cursed out by a woman in Spanish for nursing ds in the waiting room. I was behind a wall and I had the stroller in front of us. The first time I ever nurse him in public someone freaks out. Aggghhhhhuuuuuuu
I am at my wits end, I just don’t know what to do anymore. I want my baby to feel good, to be a normal baby and to sleep at night.
Thanks for letting me vent.August 20, 2008 at 4:21 pm #55516AnonymousInactiveI’m so sorry your appt. went so badly. I can’t believe the allergist himself acted like that! I would consider getting referred to another allergiist if he’s not willing to do anything diff. AND Poor Baby! That had to have been so painful for the little guy! My DD gets her blood drawn tomorrow (for allergy testing) during her endoscopies. So, she’ll be under anesthesia. Hopefully her veins don’t collapse. I remember when she was just born & in the hospital they had to draw blood for testing and when they FINALLY brought her back they said that they had the HARDEST time getting blood out of her tiny feetsies.
BTW, the lady can get over it! You do what you have to do for your LO. AND It wasn’t like you were all out in the open. You were trying to be considerate and stay behind a corner and your stroller. What more can you do?!
Hopefully, someone else knows more about allergy testing and if there is anything they can do differently to get the blood drawn. I hope things get better for you and your LO!!!August 20, 2008 at 4:53 pm #55519AnonymousInactiveI am SO sorry you had a rough day!!! The blood draw for allergies was really hard on my LO too. It ended up coming back all negative which my pedi does not beleive (my DS is COVERED in excema) I have since researched and read that skin prick allergy testing is more accurate. I am not trying to throw you off here, just wanted to let you know I have heard that there are some false negatives/positives with that test. So if you dont get the chance to do it again this week and want do do your own research, you can. Also, I just cannot beleive the attitude of the doctor!!!! And WTH is wrong with nursing your baby? People bottle feed babies all over the place, women who BF should have the same right. It isnt like you weren’t trying to be discreet!!! HUGE hugs to you! Sounds like a horrible day and I hope you are having a much better day now.
August 20, 2008 at 6:10 pm #55522AnonymousInactiveSorry you had such a rough day. Can you get reffered to another Dr to get some testing done??
August 20, 2008 at 8:27 pm #55531AnonymousInactiveSo sorry to hear that you had such a terrible day. As to the breast feeding incident, do not let ignorant people discourage you from doing what is best for your baby! Things WILL get better. It is so hard in the mean time, but you and your little one will make it through. I hope that things improve sooner rather than later.
August 20, 2008 at 9:13 pm #55535AnonymousInactiveI can sympathize with you. cooper had his skin pricks last week and it was horrible for him. We had blood drawn the next day as well for further testing and for us it went much smoother, but his vein did collapse at the end but luckily they had gotten enough for the tests at the time. HUGS.
August 21, 2008 at 9:59 am #55547AnonymousInactiveThanks for all the support. It really helps knowing there are others who are going through similar stuff. I found a much better Dr. but the appt. is more than a month away. Hopefully by then we’ll have figured out what’s causing his problems.

Things went the best for us (still difficult, but better) when we had her bloodwork drawn at the children’s hospital lab. They’re more familiar in dealing with babies, techniques to use to calm baby and mom, and they definitely let you nurse in public!!!
