hi everyone. this is shanes first time being REALLY sick.. therefore my first time EVER having to deal with something like this! he has a temperature of about 104 … well it was 103.5 at the ped’s office an hour after tylenol..so i assume around 104. he didnt sleep all night.. and if he did he was whining every couple minutes 🙁 no ear infection.. he does have a constant thick runny nose though.
anyhow, ANY advice?? i feel like i am going crazy.. back to the colic days! i cant put him down what so ever! and i get really nervous when his whole body is burning up. the ped said to give him tylenol AND motrin. any thing else i can do?? i just picked up tylenol cold.. do you guys give that to your babies? i know i heard something about not giving young children cold medicine…
well… thanks for any input.. the doctor thinks this might turn into rosiola because his fever his so high 🙁 so, i think that means i might have to deal with this for the next 3 or 4 days! ugh, my heart is breaking for him..

Definitely do give Tylenol every 4 hours and Motrin every 6 hours around the clock for a few days. I do this for the girls for the first 2 days or so if there temperature is that high, regardless if their temperature is lower when they are due for their next dose, I don’t skip it. In children their temperatures spike so fast and they are so uncomfortable. Also we give tepid bathes if the temperature is still high and they are not due for medications, it usually cools them off so they are comfortable for awhile. Good Luck! Keep an eye on if he is playing with his ears, since ear infections do come on very fast as well, even though you were seen today and there was no ear infection.
April 2, 2007 at 8:38 pm #29334AnonymousInactivePoor Shane and poor mummy. I would do the round the clock tylenol and motrin like Sue suggested. Also try and get lots of fluid into him (other than milk…yuk when you feel sick). Maybe some juice, some pedialyte…the stuff you put in water when you have gastro…anything a little sweet to encourage him to drink…because fluid in the system can help to bring down a temp. Lots of food that is water rich like fruit. I hope he gets better soon.
April 2, 2007 at 8:38 pm #29335AnonymousInactivehi sue, thanks for the advice..
what are the problems going on with children cold medicines?? if you dont mind me asking.. i know i have heard something along the way, but not sure why or what. also, why would there be INFANT cold medicines if they are not approved for infants??
April 2, 2007 at 8:52 pm #29341AnonymousInactivethe FDA is considering taking all cold medicines for children under the age of 6 off the market. i personally stay away from those, because they contain decongestants, and those even make ME feel loopy. so yeah. i would stick with regular tylenol and motrin.
April 2, 2007 at 8:53 pm #29342AnonymousInactiveoh i use benadryl for colds! works great! it stops the sneezing, itching, watery eyes, if he has that that is.nataliachick72007-4-2 20:53:51
April 2, 2007 at 9:00 pm #29345AnonymousInactivehow much benadryl? can u give it the same time as the tylenol?
April 2, 2007 at 9:08 pm #29346AnonymousInactiveyeah, the askdrsears website has the dosing under “medicine cabinet”. it starts at 17 lbs, but i started it when trace was like 15 lbs, i just gave a little less than the recommended dose.
April 2, 2007 at 9:21 pm #29347AnonymousInactiveI’m sorry that Shane is sick. I know it’s very scary when their fevers spike that high. I’ve been through it numerous times with all three of mine. I read that babies can spike really high fevers with viruses or with bacterial infections, mainly because their hypothalmus is not fully mature yet. That’s why it’s considered normal and not too worrisome for infants and toddlers to get really high temps, but it’s considered to be more dangerous in adults.
I agree with tylenol or motrin around the clock. My clinic discourages using both at the same time, so I usually give tylenol during the day and motrin at night, but I’ve actually found that tylenol works better for reducing a fever than Motrin for my children. Also don’t be concerned if the fever doesn’t go down to normal even with tylenol or motrin. They are actually called fever reducers because they can lower a temp but they don’t always bring it down to normal.
As for cold medicines, I agree with Natalia. I wouldn’t use them. Apparently there are no studies or even FDA reccommendations on dosing cold meds for children and so the doses we are giving are not actually proven to be safe. The FDA is saying that too many children are being seen in ER’s due to bad reactions to cold medicines and some of these kids have died.
Like Therese said, fluids are one of the best treatments so try to get as much into him as you can.
The thick runny nose is something Eliana gets frequently….basically an Upper Respiratory Infection. They always tell me it’s a cold and with my other two it usually passes in a week to 10 days, but for Ellie it frequently continues and she ends up needing an antibiotic. So, watch for that. The fever usually only lasts a few days, but the runny, stuffy nose can last a week or longer.
I hope he’s feeling better soon.
April 2, 2007 at 9:51 pm #29351AnonymousInactiveI am so sorry to hear that Shane is sick! Fevers are scary! Sarah had her first fever last week and it was 101 and I about had a heart attack…so I know how you’re feeling. I really hope he starts feeling better sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooon!
April 2, 2007 at 9:54 pm #29352AnonymousInactiveI think that every baby is different, but with Kaelyn tylenol does very little if she has a really high fever. When she was sick last year, we did exactly what Sue suggested and did Tylenol every four hours and Motrin every 6 for the first day or two. It really seemed to help keep her comfortable.
I hadn’t heard that about cold medicines. Alex has been getting Pediacare cough and cold just about every night all winter long. I guess we’ll try to stay away from it from now on.
April 2, 2007 at 11:02 pm #29361AnonymousInactiveI’m sorry that Shane is so sick. Poor guy! It kind of sounds like a sinus infection to me! I agree with what the other’s have said about Tylenol & Motrin. Motrin works best for my kids’ fevers. My doctor said it’s fine to give both at the same time when it’s really bad.
Good luck; I hope he gets feeling better soon!
April 3, 2007 at 11:53 am #29385AnonymousInactivePoor Shane! We often given both tylenol and motrin around the clock when Sarah has a fever. How is he today?
We give tylenol cold to Hailey and our ped said it was fine from when she was about 6 months I believe. You have to do what you think is right.
April 3, 2007 at 12:05 pm #29390AnonymousInactiveThe are trying to get the cold medications pulled from the market for children 6 and under due to the decongestant dosages in it, I guess there has been a lot of accidental overdoses on it. They don’t know how much is a safe dose for the kids that young, so there is no FDA approved dosage unfortunately. I’m not sure what else is going on with the cold medications but that’s a little of what I know. Both girls respond very well to Children’s Advil vs. other medications. How’s Shane doing today? April 3, 2007 at 1:13 pm #29403AnonymousInactivehe is actually a bit better! thanks everyone.. not great, but atleast i know its heading in the right direction instead of getting worse! he is acutally able to play a tiny bit, if i sit right next to him. but, last night was a NIGHTMARE! he literally wakes every 10-30 minutes crying. at one point i gave up and said what is the point of sleeping?!
do you guys ever notice that their reflux flares A LOT when they are sick like this?? he keeps burping constantly. i gave gaviscon hoping it would help more with his sleep… it didnt.
but thanks again.. and hopefully tomorrow will be better.
