Yes – soft poo hopes here too. Just ate some prunes so we’ll see.
Yes, at least he did it on the probe so hopefully you can get some
answers – definitely post and/or email me as soon as you know anything
and get back from the allergist.I know what you mean about Elecare/Neocate and our parents generation –
but by the same token, I think many of us as a result have food
allergies that might have been prevented if not pushed so early? Not
sure – I think it can go both ways…March 28, 2006 at 8:38 am #4800AnonymousInactivecaoimhe wrote:
I always have this theory that being on Elecare/Neocate sometimes makes there stomachs so sensitive to anything with substance to it. I mean, our parents had children with colic right and most outgrew it by 6-9 months on regular formula. We know now that it was probably mspi or reflux but they just didn’t know back then. I always say this but again just a theory (or wishful thinking).
This my theory also b/c my dh’s family always used goat’s milk instead of formula!
March 28, 2006 at 8:45 am #4801AnonymousInactiveBoth my dad and my DH’s mom were on goat’s milk because of milk problems as babies!
March 28, 2006 at 5:19 pm #4842AnonymousInactiveThe only reason I say he doesnt tolerate 100% is just by the difference when he is not having any solid food. When we take a break from solid food he is happy and smiling all day and sleeps through the night. When he is having solid food he has crying periods during the day and wakes a couple of times at night so I know that it affects him in some way. When he has a bad food reaction though he cries all day and wakes every hour at night, so you can work out the foods that really affect him.
I would be waiting until you have sorted out all of Ians current problems before I started on solids though otherwise it will be really hard to know if the foods are causing problems.
March 28, 2006 at 5:28 pm #4843AnonymousInactiveOK, just got back from Doctors-Probe is out and results tomorrow. Hopefully that will give us more clues…
Met with Allergist at Mt. Sinai and I actually felt very encouraged. She said Ian’s skin looked beautiful and that usually a rash/ecezma would be on the body as well as face if it was from something taken internally. On the face is usually something environment (and that could include teething or daddy’s stubble). I also told her about the mucous in the stool after amoxocillin (which he pooed again this afternoon-still watery/loose and mucous AGAIN). She doesn’t think it’s an allergic reaction if there were no other signs and thinks it’s a GI problem. Again, no guarantees but she really suspects Ian’s digestive system is just really that sensitive and he’ll outgrow. I’m still a little disturbed by the mucous because we’ve started solids today (her ok) and want to make sure I can read any problems but who knows how long it’s going to last at this point. We did skin tests for cat, rice, oat, corn, peaches, apples (he drank apple juice great during probe test-2 days in a row!), sweet potato, carrot, and squash. She said yellow veg are the safest to start with. ALL NEGATIVE!!!! Now, I know that can change but she seemed to think after 6 months they get a pretty good picture and after a year it’ll be even more conclusive. She also said that doesn’t include intolerances (which most kids outgrow) so we have to watch for those so they don’t turn into allergies. So I’m choosing to be positive and see this day as a step forward and not worry about the future.
We did try one tsp of sweet potato with lots of excited energy from Ian-really wanted it and made sounds when I took away! We will do this for one week with tiny amounts gradually increasing like most of you. Only down side-he’s been doing well on bottle last 2 days -6 oz a feeding but when I gave him bottle after the tsp of solids, he did his usual suck/turn away thing. Not like reflux, more distracted or couldn’t be bothered, a little gassy…just lack of interest. Do you guys think I should offer solids AFTER the bottle? I always read it’s the other way around but I don’t want him to say ‘hey there’s something better out there..” or do the thing he likes to when he feels a little full, he moves on… anyone else experience this?
So now I sit and wait for reaction. I really hope the mucous goes away so I can get a good picture…will definitely tell GI that allergist thinks it’s her area…
Cross your fingers!!

March 28, 2006 at 5:53 pm #4845AnonymousInactiveYeah! They all came up negative! That is so great! I usually have to space out bottles and solids like maybe an hour in between or he will eat one and not the other!
March 28, 2006 at 6:03 pm #4846AnonymousInactiveGreat news!!! Let us know how the PH probe goes.
We also have to space out bottles and solids by at least an hour or we get refusal.
March 28, 2006 at 6:40 pm #4847AnonymousInactiveOh good! I was worried-next time we’ll space out.
We had sweet potato at 4 and he’s fussy right now…OF COURSE I’m over-worrying and paranoid…
Anyone here ever try SP? I know Amber had no success but allergist was pretty adamate it was good to try first..

March 28, 2006 at 6:53 pm #4848AnonymousInactiveWe haven’t done it yet but I have a friend whose baby was very fussy
and wired from sweet potato. I’ve heard it can be a bit hard for some
-starchy. Might be good from an allergy standpoint but not digestive?
Not sure – we are planning to try it soon – so far have had luck with
banana, peach, peas and on day two of prunes. Pears didn’t go over
great and avocado caused a big rash. Carrots constipated.March 28, 2006 at 8:35 pm #4859AnonymousInactiveBTW – we do bottle before solids and the solids about one hour later.
At this age, the formula is still most important – you don’t want them
to fill up on solids..March 28, 2006 at 9:11 pm #4861AnonymousInactiveTracy, glad to hear the allergy tests came back negative! Wonderful!! Hope you get some answers from the probe. Please keep us posted.
March 28, 2006 at 10:25 pm #4865AnonymousInactiveIm so glad you had a good experience with the allergy clinic. It is great that all the tests came up negative, what a relief.
Sweet potato is supposed to be a good first food although we had no luck with it. Just take things slowly, it can take some getting used to. Usually at around 9 months you can give solids before bottles, but up until then the milk should be their main food. We have just started giving Tyler his lunch before his bottle because he just wasnt hungry enough.
You wouldnt believe what happened here. At the moment banana is the only fruit that Tyler can eat. Well last week a hurricane went through the far north of Australia and wiped out 95% of our country’s banana plantations. So we have no banana’s! I have to try him on another fruit as soon as we have finished his beef trial so he can have some fruit.
Glad Ian is drinking his bottle, is he feeling better generally?
March 29, 2006 at 2:01 pm #4910AnonymousInactiveOh Amber-I read about that in the paper! I’m so sorry! How about peaches-the allergist said those are pretty good to start with..have you tried yet?
Well, learned my lesson and gave bottle first. 2nd day of sweet potato and super fussy and GASSY! He’s letting one loose quite often and they smell so bad, I keep swearing he has to have pooped! Every time I check his diaper though, there’s nothing. No other reaction – I guess give it a couple more times and see if his little digestive system adapts? Amber-how did Tyler react to them-was it severe or just gassiness? So hard to tell anything.
Ian’s still waking up all night. Karen-good idea about the pacifier…he could be looking for the comfort especially with teething… my friend brought up maybe it’s just become a habit now since he went through those horrible nights when we switched meds? Also, he rolls so much to the bottom that I think it’s definitely time to de-elevate the crib. I will take any suggestions on how to get him back on schedule-we have got to get some sleep-it’s really killing us now at 3 1/2 weeks. At least as a newborn, you knew they were hungry, fed them, and back they go. Of course, who am I to complain when my poor little guy is the one in pain. I’m so not ready for letting him ‘cry it out’ especially if I can’t rule out it being a medical issue. C’est la vie!

March 29, 2006 at 2:16 pm #4913AnonymousInactiveWe’ve had good success with peaches here.
Marisa often gets gassy with a new food but usually adjusts after a few
days – unless the reaction is more severe. I believe that Thais said
that Matthew is usually the same – takes time to adjust to new food.
Have you tried Mylicon or gripe water to help with the gas?I’ll also email you with some sleep thoughts.
March 29, 2006 at 3:16 pm #4917AnonymousInactiveOh, that’s good to know. When she gets gassy-does fussiness follow?..I think I will try some maalox (mylicon and gripe water never worked for us). Allergist also said give him the benefit of the doubt with fussiness so I’m going stick with it unless it gets really bad or other symptoms appear. I don’t want to freak out and it’s not as bad as alimentum was.
I’m sure he’ll love peaches! When we gave him SP today, he didn’t want it but later changed his mind (we didn’t force). He loved them the first day…
