So we had an ear infenction reprieve for the months of July and August, but now THEY’RE BAAAAAAAACK! Grr… We went back to the doctor today after he was put on Omincef for this one. After a whole round of the antibiotic, it is still there, and he has some suspicious fluid in the other ear too. So, now he’s on Augmentin. I’m not happy about this, as I’ve heard it can really hurt their tummies. Poor little guy. He really has looked so pale, has no appetite.
So, anyway, called the ENT again, and we are being booked for tube surgery. YIPEEE.. only problem, there isn’t an opening until DECEMBER!!! The scheduling nurse is supposed to be calling around tomorrow to see if they can find an opening at another hospital, so hopefully this can happen sooner rather than later.Anyway, can anyone tell me anything about Augmentin??October 29, 2007 at 10:39 pm #44764AnonymousInactiveAugmentin and Omnicef never worked for Owen, gave him diarrhea badly and he would sleep a little better on them, but they never really cleared it up! THE TUBES WERE A MIRACLE!!!!!
For some reason I thought Ben already had tubes?? Is this a second pair or am I thinking of someone else??That’s too bad that it would take until Dec! I would think something in there would open up! We went in on a Tuesday and he had his tubes on Thursday! It was AWESOME!! It was the day after the 4th of July so I guess no one wanted to do anything that day? I certainly jumped on it!!Good luck! Hopefully they can keep it under control until you get tubes! Poor guy!Griffin has croup….. I thought that was something from the old days….. But he has this terrible cough that sounds like barking seals! We went in today and they gave him a shot of Prednisone. Kind of drastic I thought, but he seems better already tonite!Oh the joys of winter!!October 30, 2007 at 6:33 am #44767AnonymousInactiveWe were on Augmentin but not for an ear infection. But it didn’t upset his tummy to terribly bad. We just kept with the probiotics and I just noticed more frequent bms, but not loose or anything. The one ear infection we have had had to use Zithromax to clear it up, you may want to ask for that, it is so much easier on the tummy. I hope they can get him in for tubes earlier than Dec.
October 30, 2007 at 9:17 am #44773AnonymousInactiveOh no! Poor little guy! The tubes were a MIRACLE for Hailey- they really helped with the ear infections, and it was like she came out it finally able to hear me. I hope that they are as great for you guys!
To everyone battling the Winter bugs, hope they pass soon!!!!October 30, 2007 at 2:15 pm #44796AnonymousInactiveUgh.. I feel for you. Myles has had quite a few ear infections…two in the last two months. He took Augmentin the last time and I was worried but he had no problems with it at all other than a loose stool the first day. The doc I took him to said that they’ve reformulated it so that it’s not so hard on the tummy like it used to be. So, that’s good news, but Myles is sick again….fever and irritabilty…so I’m worried that he may have another ear infection.
I hope Ben gets better quickly and has no problem with the Augmentin.October 30, 2007 at 2:22 pm #44798AnonymousInactiveThanks everyone! I’m still waiting to hear from the scheduler, but I’ll keep you posted on the surgery.
Erica: no, he hasn’t had tubes before. We were just talking about them and almost got them back at the end of spring, but then he stopped getting ear infections for a little bit, so we put it off. And Croup!! Claire just had it too! I also thought that she was too old for it, but man, it got scary there for a little, and she also had to have the steroids. The virus season is definitely back !!!October 30, 2007 at 3:18 pm #44801AnonymousInactiveHI
My oldest girl had many ear infections Omincef, Augmentin and a round of Rocephin shots did not touch her infections. Our ped got her in to the ent in about 2 weeks, after several calls from me and knowing that I was getting ready to have my second child(my gerdling). Danika had tubes the last week in May and then Ashlynn was her the following week. After surgery Danika was a totally different child. She was talking more ”””’ alot more. After follow up with the ENT hearing improved back to 100%. Yea!!!!!!!Ashlynn is starting to have flare up again on her reflux. We have weaned her off of her Periactin, but now she is not sleeping very good, wakes up alot, screaming.Good luck on the tubesstcwatt2007-10-30 15:20:45
November 1, 2007 at 2:17 pm #44871AnonymousInactiveDecember 5th!!! That’s the earliest they can get us in! We are on the cancellation list, but the nurse didn’t make that sound too hopeful. I’m so bummed because he is still having problems with this current infection. I’m taking him back in tomorrow because I think, once again, the antibiotics aren’t cutting it.
November 8, 2007 at 2:40 pm #45202AnonymousInactiveWe got a new surgery date. HOORAY!!! It’s now scheduled for Nov. 20th. He is on a low dose of antibiotics until then with the hopes of warding off any new infections. I can’t wait to get this behind us!!!
November 8, 2007 at 3:44 pm #45204AnonymousInactiveThat’s great Noami. Before our first set, we too did a low dose of Omnicef daily and it did wonders keeping the fluid from getting reinfected. Good luck with the tubes. They have been a blessing for us (on our second set!).

November 9, 2007 at 4:09 am #45233AnonymousInactiveAfter having ear infections last week myself I feel for the little guy. Honestly, I wanted to get a knitting needle and scratch around in my ears….how bad must it be for these little ones. Come on the 20th Nov.
November 9, 2007 at 3:41 pm #45245AnonymousInactiveHey there,
i am sorry your LO is till dealing with THOSE NASTY ear infections.I hope the tubes help.Kendra got a double EI even with tubes. I just wanted to tell you that i got sooo tired of antibioitcs and i gave Wallys Ear Oil ( i bought at GNC) a try (1-2 drops a day for 2 days, twice a day or as needed). It seemed to work as she started feeling better and i didn’t go to the ped. i didn’t have a diagnosed for EI, but after sooo many, you learned to reconize the pattern and behavior.i read the ingredients and i thought it couln’t hurt to try.here are the ingredients:sweet almond oil, eucalyptus oil, tea tree oil, Mullein Extract (numbs the pain), Echinacia oil, Garlic Oil, and other extracts.LeoNovember 10, 2007 at 2:22 pm #45294AnonymousInactiveNaomi~ I was just going to add that if they give you Floxin after the surgery be sure and ask for them to add a refill. It really helps when there’s a possible infection and or excessive drainage after tubes. I really hope Ben doesn’t suffer afterwards but to have something on hand always helps. Congrats with the earlier date! Will be keeping him in our prayers!
Leo~ I was told that I couldn’t use another type of drops after the surgery. We had a prescription numbing/pain relieving drop that had to be discontinued. I might check that one out because we are back to having drainage and ear pain again. GRR
