Hi – my 4 week old son is currently on Zantac, 1/2 tsp twice a day. Last Saturday he was 10lbs 10oz. (The first dose seemed to help him a little, but not a lot. He gets worse and worse every day.) I’m wondering how much Zantac he can be taking? The doctor said this was the maximum dose.
I’m kind of hoping to move to a better medicine, and like a lot of you have talked about, I’m hoping to get a good dose for him! My doctor didn’t even want to put him on Zantac at all. If you had to suggest one medicine, what would it be? Do you like the new one … Zegregid(sp?)
Also, I have heard a lot about Mylanta and Tums. Does it matter what kind? My drug store does not carry the “Supreme” cherry brand. They all have alluminum. What about Tums?
Have any of you tried gripe water, Hyland colic tablets, or gas drops? Any success??
Thanks so much!!

mylanta cherry supreme- look at walmart or walgreens or maybe order online? in the meantime, the kind w/ aluminum won’t hurt….
as for zantac, I’ll help you w/ the dose- maximum dose is 10mgs per kilo
baby is 10 & 1/2 lbs so that’s 4.8 kilos
max dose is 10mgs per kilo
so: 10 x 4.8 = 48mgs total for the day of zantac
the liquid is 15mgs/ml (check your bottle)
so: 48 divided by 15 = 3.2mls a day, total, divided up into 2 doses over the course of 24hrs
you say baby is on 1/2 a tsp, that’s 2.5mls
and, you say it’s 2 times a day. so, that’s 5mls total for the day- yes it’s high as a dr might go….Zantac dosing- my/otherโs question: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=9539&PID=82914#82914
this might help you w/ the various ‘forms’ of PPIs:
Prevacid 101(last post on the page): https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1936&PN=0&TPN=1
March 27, 2008 at 9:24 am #49436AnonymousInactiveThank you. wow. I guess he IS taking the maximum does of Zantac. Maybe I should go back to that after hours doctor because she might be more willing to prescribe a high does of a PPI. If the Zantac isn’t doing anything at that high of a dose, than he must have it pretty bad. ๐ I’m pretty sure (after reading things) that he has Sandifers Syndrome too. He must be in a lot of pain. It kills me.
Is it ok to take the mylanta or tums with the zantac? Do I need to space it out? How much mylanta? Before, after feeding, ….?
Thank you for everything.
March 27, 2008 at 11:38 am #49442AnonymousInactiveI believe you can give the mylanta or tums at any time around zantac but not for sure…hopefully someone else will respond who knows for certain. I believe you also suspect a milk/soy protein intolerance? Forgive me if I have you confused with someone else, but some tums contain milk ingredients so read the labels or do a search here…I believe it was the tropical flavor that is safe.
I would suggest seeing a pediatric GI instead of just a regular ped….they will be more informed (hopefully) on infant GER….even if it means traveling to a different city, as we did, it would be worth it to get him on the right meds and dose.March 27, 2008 at 6:18 pm #49480hellbenntKeymasterMarch 27, 2008 at 9:28 pm #49490AnonymousInactiveWell, we went to a different doctor today. I’ll probably have to pay out of pocket, but at this point I don’t care. He listened to and believed me, and even looked at all the Marci-kids papers I printed out for him. He felt uncomfortable about the Zegerid because he couldn’t find any info on it for little babies (4weeks old.) He said he’d make some calls and let me know tomorrow. If not, we’re trying prevacid. I THINK he may go by the Marci dosing – but we’ll have to see. He suggested trying Nutramigen (but mentioned that this still has some milk in it) and also gave me a referral to a GI specialist right away. I’m really hopeful and so excited to start trying something else to help my baby out.
We tried Nutramigen once and he ate it just fine, he just spit up a bunch and seemed REALLY fussy afterwards??
Do any of you know if the Zegerid is ok for 1month old babies, and if so – what kind of research or info can back that up??
Thanks!
Heather
March 27, 2008 at 9:33 pm #49492hellbenntKeymasterzegerid is fine for babies
they haven’t done much studeis w/ babies bcse who wants to test babies, you know? but nexium, another PPI has recently been approved for infants. also, not that this means anything research-wise, but my son started PPIs really early on and was on them for a year. he’ll be 5 in July and he’s fine.dr philips, of marci-kids, will talk to your doctor! he’s at the forefront of PPI research & infants…he’s helped many many of us here on this board (& on other boards, too!)April 1, 2008 at 12:04 pm #49705AnonymousInactiveHow can I contact Dr. Phillips so he can contact my doctor? I really want Dallin to start on Zegerid, and not prevacid – but I’m not sure if the specialist will like that. No one seems comfortable with it. If Dallin does have a milk or protein intolerance, is prevacid or Zegerid bad for it?
April 1, 2008 at 1:21 pm #49708AnonymousInactiveZegerid is completely dairy free. Addy was on it, and still can not tolerate dairy.
You can email him directly through the marci-kids site. You could always fax some info from the site directly to the doctor’s office with a nice note. ๐April 1, 2008 at 1:53 pm #49709AnonymousInactiveThank you. When I try to email him, something comes up on my computer that says I need to set up an email thing, etc. I guess I’ll have to do that. Does anyone have his actual email address?
So Zegerid is Dairy free, but they say to mix it with Mylanta, right? Is Mylanta Cherry Supreme dairy free?
April 1, 2008 at 2:06 pm #49711AnonymousInactiveI sent you a pm.
Yes, Mylanta cherry supreme is dairy free too. -
