Hi everyone! I am so stressed out and I really hope someone here might be able to offer some suggestions. Our son started getting really fussy and refusing to eat about 2 weeks ago. Our pedi had us switch to soy formula, but that didn’t help so next we went to Nutramegin. On Monday we went back and he was still not wanting to eat, so we were given Axid. He is still screaming when we try to feed him, so I don’t know what to do. I know the medicine takes time to work, but what do we do until then to get some nutrition in him? He will take Pedialyte in okay at some feedings, but he has to have something other than that!!!!!
DH called today and they offered us a script for Prevacid but that’s about all they said. SHould we try that? With the Axid or just switch? I am so confused. He needs food, but how do I get it to him??? (He does have some of the other signs of reflux, but no spitting up)Thanks so much.October 9, 2008 at 9:05 am #57550AnonymousInactiveYes you can do the Prevacaid and the Axid together. We do Axid and Prilosec together. I owuld call the GI and get th edoses thoguh jsut to make sure.
You may really see a difference with the Prevacaid because it is a PPI and works much better than Axid, a H2Blocker. They work in the body in differnt ways. The PPIs are much stronger.Personally if the reflux is causing that much pain I’d go full on with just a PPI. We did for the longest time. We are trying to wen Jedd (after 2 fullyears) over to a H2blocker.I’d give the Prevaciad on an empty stomach at least 30-60 mins before trying to offer any food. It works much more effectivily that way.I’d see if they can give you an RX for a split dose one for the morning and one for the evening. If you don’t see results with that, ask them to do 3 doses in one day.As far as eating….can you use a sryinge and see if you can make headway that way. I’m not much hlep whne it come to infants that young he won’t eat. Jedd had a tube so we jsut tubed him his nutrition when we was at his worse and would not eat anyhting for days/weeeks/months. Literally he went about 18months being completely tube fed.Now if you are still here when your LO become a fussy aversion toddler, that I most certainly can hlep VERY well with. You can at least do some oral exercixes right now. Like rubbing your finger in the mouth and on the gums and on the cheeks. And stretching out the cheeks. Pushing down on the gums to cause th emuscles int eh jaw to get stronger. These can’t hurt, that’s for sure.October 9, 2008 at 9:13 am #57552AnonymousInactiveYou do have to space the prevacid and the axid apart by 3 to 4 hours for them to be effective, though.
Also, if you see any less wet diapers or any real sleepiness, then you need to go to the ER. Babies this young can get dehydrated easily and that should be your #1 concern. Also, not that you want to make a habit of this as it is hard to break, but you could try some real sleepy feeds. When Dylan would NOT eat no matter what we did, we would pick him up out of his crib while he was sleeping and put the bottle in his mouth. Babies will instinctually suck, and we would get a good three ounce feed in him until he woke up and started screaming at me, but at least I felt like I was getting some food and liquid in him to keep him hydrated and a bit fed until everything else got under control.Hang in there. I remember those days and the baby that would NOT eat. So hard and frustrating, but it WILL get better. I might consider a second opinion if you don’t feel like your ped is being responsive. That might help getting a second perspective. Please feel free to vent any time as well. This is an AMAZING site with GREAT moms who have been through so many experiences, so you are going to get amazing support here.October 9, 2008 at 9:40 am #57554AnonymousInactiveMy husband called the nurse this morning and we are going back in today to see our pedi again. He is currently on 1ml of Axid 2x a day…
He’s crying….be back later.October 9, 2008 at 9:51 am #57556AnonymousInactiveA late welcome here to you…
Good luck. My heart goes out to you. Landen had really bad silent reflux and I spent longer than I should have had to sleep-feeding him at night like Ann-Marie described. I had to set my alarm for midnight and 4am to get him to eat. What would have worked better for us was a GOOD STRONG dose of a PPI. Our pedi fought us for a long time for the right dose for Landen’s weight. The proper dose for babies weight can be found using the PPI dosing calculater at http://www.marci-kids.com. Many pedi’s think the dose is absurd, b/c they were taught in med school that small doses are better, not realizing what marci kids research suggests and that is that babies/kids metabolism is SUPER fast for food and meds, so they zip through the meds and need them more often. think of how often babies need to eat! When we did finally find a dr to support us, he started eating full bottles again.Good luck. Def try the Prevacid. It was a lifesaver for us and even in the smaller dose form worked FAR better than an H2blocker! If you need anything, let us know.October 9, 2008 at 1:08 pm #57561AnonymousInactiveSounds like “silent reflux” even though your son is anything but silent.
What are you doing for positioning? I found that upright positioning helped us quite a bit.
We found our daughter could no longer sleep supine after 6 weeks (projectile spit-up when we lay her down) We have to sleep her prone despite the “back to sleep” advisory. She spits up way less, we just have to monitor her – she’s always sleeping in the same room with us.
We keep her at least on a 30deg or greater when we feed. We keep her upright 30min to an hour after feeding with care to insure she isn’t slouching over and causing her stomach to compress.
I’m purchasing a sleeping wedge and praying my insurance will cover it. The AR, Tucker Sling or RESQ may be something you want to take a look at.
You may also want to look into babywearing.

October 9, 2008 at 6:13 pm #57567AnonymousInactiveThank you for all the replies. I took him to the doctor today and he had lost 5oz since Monday. The doctor was concerned about how much he was eating and now we are switching to Alimentum to see if he will tolerate that any better. He sent us for a chest x-ray because Eli was so congested; he says that could be part of his refusal to eat. He did some tests for viral infections, UTI, and food allergies. My poor little guy has had quite a day with the doctor visit, the blood draw, and the x-ray.
What’s really strange is that he ate 2oz of the Nutramigen with no fussing while we were waiting on the x-ray. We tried more of that when we got home and he was crying and turning away again…. It’s just so confusing. He’s been sleeping better at night and at naps now that we are on the Axid, but still refusing to eat. I don’t know if the medicine is helping enough that he’s able to sleep and he just hates the taste of the formula, or if we still haven’t fixed the reflux problem at all. I think our doctor was even confused, but he’s trying to help us now. I felt much better after I talked to him today. I think he realizes that we aren’t just being crazy first time parents, not with Eli losing weight and barely wanting anything to eat. He started to give us the prevacid today, but wants to hold off until we get some test results back. He gave me the script, but told me to wait on it for now.
I’ll let you know what happens as we go along…. He’s napping now, so we haven’t tried the new formula out yet.
