Hi My 3 yr old has severe reflux and has since 5 mos. He is on 30 mg of prevacid. Seems to be helping. Now he is throwing up because of the acid. He threw up 3 xs this morning the first time it was all stomach acid. The second and third time there was blood. Now my doctor wants to put him on Reglan because he suspects he has DGE. Any ideas on how to help him. And anyone that’s kids were on Reglan did it make them tired?hyper? etc. Any help would be appreciated. I know reglan has side effects but our doc doesn’t seem worried, and thinks it will help. Thanks
February 21, 2006 at 12:26 pm #2099AnonymousInactiveHi there. Has Andrew been tested for DGE? They can do a stomach
emptying scan to see if he does in fact have delayed gastric emptying.
If so, Reglan or another motility drug certainly could help but given
the possible side effects, I wouldn’t use one unless I knew my child
had DGE for sure.Could he be allergic to something he’s eating?
Is this doctor a pediatrician or a GI specialist?

The only other baby I ever heard of doing that was Laurie (3under3) – one (or maybe both) of her twins threw up blood. They had known ulcers and they were later diagnosed with food allergies. .. celiac and I think milk. Sorry Lori – its been a while forgive me for misremembering if you see this. Anyway, I would definitely get a second opinion and explore the possibility of allergies and/or ulcer first before I did the test for UGE. Like Karen said, I would also have a scan done first if you need to consider Reglan. I would hate to see your little one medicated with Reglan without knowing for sure thats what was needed.
Heres a link to most of Laurie’s posts. . .maybe you can find some “clues” in there as maybe your situation is similiar? I think the one titled “really bad day” mentions the throwing up blood?

February 21, 2006 at 1:32 pm #2107AnonymousInactiveHe has not been tested, but the doc seems to think he has the signs. We go to a pediatric gastro doctor. He seems to think we shouldn’t be concerned about the side effects of reglan. I do know we’re not dealing with allergies. The doc did a scope and biopsy and the biopsy showed no allergies. TIA anyone with ideas!!!!!! I’ve reached the end of my rope!!
February 21, 2006 at 3:37 pm #2114AnonymousInactivehmmm- I’m not sure what to say other than I feel awfully bad that you have these scary symptoms to deal with. How is the sleep – general mood – eating? Keep in mind that not all allergies and/or intolerances can be tested per se. Celiac spru ( a wheat intolerance) can cause severe gastrointestinal upset but it needs to be specifically tested. .. protein intolerance is another thing that can’t be lumped together with normal testing. .. I would still consider dietary changes since its non-invasive and quickley implemented. Heres a couple of links that you could print out and discuss with the doctor as far as reglan goes. .. whens your next appt?

For the most part doctors seem to feel very confident about Reglan and for some it can be a positive medication. Everyone is different but it just seems like its not a drug to be taken lightly as its side effects can be of a neurological nature and hard to detect in an infant who can’t communicate with you.

February 21, 2006 at 4:03 pm #2117AnonymousInactiveMy next appt is march 26th. The good thing about the reglan is I am dealing with a 3 yr old who can communicate what is happening with him. Liek I said I know the side effects of reglan but my doctor seems to think this is the avenue to go. However I do know at the first sign that anything is amiss I will have him off of it in a sec!!!!!!
February 21, 2006 at 4:04 pm #2119AnonymousInactiveBeing able to communicate is a good thing. However, IMO you shouldn’t
put him on the Reglan without knowing if DGE is a problem. I would
demand a scan ASAP if I were you.February 21, 2006 at 4:42 pm #2123AnonymousInactiveI wholeheartedly agree with Karen – anytime I deal with medication I like to know if its absolutely necessary. Do you have a good pedi who could kind of give you a more well rounded opinion on the matter? Spitting up blood is indicating something (like an ulcer) and I can’t see how thats related to DGE. .. unless I’m missing something? What were the other symptoms your doctor attributed to DGE . .. frequent spitting up?
February 21, 2006 at 5:20 pm #2126AnonymousInactiveWhat form of Prevacid are you using? It could be that the form is not effective and/or unstable, or it could also be that she needs a higher dose. Children and infants metabolize and eliminate PPIs much faster than adults, and as a result they frequently need to be given higher doses with greater frequency. February 21, 2006 at 5:35 pm #2127AnonymousInactiveThanks all! The doc we go to is a pediatric gastro specialist. He seems to want him on the reglan b’cuz of the throwing up. He thinks the blood is because his esoph is severely irritated and the violence of throwing up caused the bleeding to those tender areas. He is on 30mg of prevacid. The med is in capsule form. and now they have prescribed 3 tps of reglan 3xs a day 1/2 hour before meals. To Joel: Do you know of any way to get kids into studies of new advances in reflux treatment??????
February 21, 2006 at 5:47 pm #2128AnonymousInactiveWhat kinds of studies are you looking for? For what purpose? Send me an email: [email protected]. I may be able to help you out.
