I’m so sorry that you are going through the same thing! How’s Trace doing? I hope things are better for you! Taylor is just miserable, and there is nothing we can do! She’s at a point now that when she eats if she does, she is vomiting in her mouth! I just wish we could get a NG tube in her to give her throat time to heal!
December 28, 2006 at 10:51 pm #21242AnonymousInactivewell, its been since the 23rd. Trace is no longer vomitting or having diarhea. but, he is acting very strange. he cries a lot, need to be held constantly. i rock with him in the rocking chair almost all day to get him to calm down and he lays there all spread out like he is lethargic or something-but he isnt. i dont know whats wrong. he doesnt want to play or crawl or smile. i am freaking myself out with thoughts like what was in that anti vomitting shot they gave him in the ER. i am so paranoid about autism and thats what i am thinking about non stop-like what if there was too much mercury in the shot they gave him. after they gave him the shot is when his behavior really changed, he screamed non stop for about 4 days, and now he is just acting weird. he still wont eat. he had about 5 ounces total yesterday and about the same today.
December 29, 2006 at 12:37 am #21245AnonymousInactiveI can understand why you might be a little concerned. Is there anything you can do? Will you just wait a few days and see if he’s back to normal? It’s so hard when you know that your baby isn’t acting like themself. I hope he’s back to normal soon!
December 29, 2006 at 12:51 am #21246AnonymousInactivegod im so mad right now. Trace is refusing eaiting anytime i try to give him caracream. he will scream and spit it out and then refuse the rest of the bottle-he is associating it with the caracream.
i am so mad at Mike-he is heartless. and he just blew $600 on a shaver and new cell phone which he did not need. Trace NEEDS zegerid.
i have to call my mom in the morning and beg her for money for zegerid.
i do not need a baby with a feeding aversion.
mike keeps saying “he will get used to it”
my @ss. if anything he will go into full blown feeding aversion mode. all he ate was 5 oz today.December 29, 2006 at 1:16 am #21247AnonymousInactiveI am racking my brain so hard right now trying to think of a way you could get Zegerid cheaper…I’m assuming you’ve exhausted all options?? Did you ever talk to your pharmacist to see if they could make any phone calls for you? That helped us immensely. Because of him, we’re only paying $10 a box instead of an insane amount. Our pharmacist sort of lied to insurance and told them we had tried all other options and that Zegerid was the only choice. Our insurance has a “step program” and doesn’t cover Zegerid until A B and C haven’t worked. BUT I know you’ve tried several other medicines so your pharmacist wouldn’t even need to lie about that one! It’s worth a shot???
I’m sorry your husband doesn’t seem to have his priorities straight right now. That is very infuriating!!! Men can definitely be very insensitive sometimes.
Hang in there!
amy00132006-12-29 1:48:50December 29, 2006 at 1:23 am #21248AnonymousInactiveyes, i have tried everything. Trace is on medicaid right now and they dont cover zegerid-no matter what. They have a contract with prevacid so they hand it out like candy.
i even called the santarus company that sells zegerid-they dont have any assistance programs or anythingDecember 29, 2006 at 1:52 am #21249AnonymousInactiveCould you say that Trace doesn’t tolerate the prevacid?? He’s allergic to it or something? There HAS to be a loop hole in their contract with prevacid SOMEWHERE. Have you talked to your doctor about the fact that they won’t cover it? What did they say? I’ll keep thinking…
December 29, 2006 at 9:58 am #21259AnonymousInactiveFirst of all Natalia, I would call your doctor and tell him that your dh refuses to pay for Zegerid and make sure he documents this in Trace’s medical file. This little tidbit of information may come in handy some time in the future.
Next I would look into Amy’s suggestion. It’s possible that they have some kind of loophole in which they will cover Zegerid if all other options have been exhausted and Trace cannot tolerate the other comparable meds.
Have you considered Prilosec? Would they cover that?
If I have any other ideas I will certainly post them for you, but that’s all I can come up with right now.
December 29, 2006 at 9:59 am #21260AnonymousInactiveNatalia,
I bet the reason Trace doesn’t want to play & sees lethargic is that he is SO weak from being sick so long and not being able to keep anything in him. I know I’ve felt that way after a bad case of stomach flu. I bet after a day or two he’ll get his strength back and be more himself.Good luck with finding an answer with the medicine. I wish I had some advice.
December 29, 2006 at 4:26 pm #21287AnonymousInactiveNatalia,
Hailey was sick for over a week and a half, first with an ear infection/cold, and then with something viral where she was vomitting many times a day. Even though she was apparently hydrated, it took two weeks until she stopped lying around on the floor, and got her energy back. I know that after I’m sick with a GI bug, I have no energy for a few days either. I really wouldn’t worry about the shot having anything in it. I’m sure that your hospital treats many babies and I personally think that it’s just needless worry to be concerned about mercury etc (as you mentioned in your other post) on top of everything else. I don’t mean to sound insensitive, I just know how hard it is to deal with them when they’re sick, without having to worry about everything under the sun. I personally would take him to your ped, and not to the ER, but that’s just my opinion. Waiting in the ER can be a frustrating experience and probably won’t lead to anything new. This way your ped can evaluate him, and she knows what he’s usually like, so if his temperament is off maybe she’ll be more attune to that.
I don’t have any suggestions for the CaraCream issue. Hailey never liked the taste, but it really does work well for her. One thing I noticed is that you’ve started him off on a lower dose then he was on the zegerid. I think you said somewhere in the 20-something mg range when he was on 50+ mg/day of omeprazole, because prevacid is a stronger drug. I have never heard that prevacid is a stronger drug other than anecdotally mentioned by a few docs that prevacid is more effective. But the dosing information is actually the opposite- they recommend more mg/kg of prevacid per day then they do of omeprazole. This is even true on the marci-kids website, where for a 7 month-2yr old they suggest 1-1.25 mg/kg of prevacid 3 times a day, and only 1mg/kg of omeprazole 3 times a day. Is it possible that maybe he’s not eating well because he’s not getting nearly as much medicine as he was before?
Anyhow, good luck. I hope that you find something that works soon.
December 29, 2006 at 8:47 pm #21307AnonymousInactivelori-
the dosing on marci kids for trace is 42 mg of zegerid(from the 40 mg packs, NOT the 20, the dosing is different) (even though he needed 56 ish) and for prevacid it says 18mg-27 mg. doesnt that dosing indicate prevacid is a stronger drug?
how do you get hailey to take it? Trace has been screaming whenever i try and then refuses the rest of the bottle too because he is terrified i am going to sneak in the caracream. ugh!
im scared to try the solutabs because of the lactose and aspartame and the timing thing would drive me nuts-he is so unpredictable.December 29, 2006 at 9:50 pm #21314AnonymousInactiveI would have to say that no, the fact that the 40mg packets suggest 42 mg and that prevacid indicates 18-27 does not mean that prevacid is a stronger drug. The higher dose is being suggested based on the amount of buffer, not the amount of medicine. Compare the 20mg packets to the solutabs and you’ll see that they generally recommend a higher amount of prevacid compared to solutabs-I say generally b/c I think that there are mistakes in the calculator at some of the weights. So I personally don’t like that dosing calculator much. But for example if you put in 7 months and 16 pounds they suggest 21-30 mg of prevacid and 21-27 of zegerid, and if you put in 12 months and 22 pounds they suggest 27-39mg of prevacid and only 24-36 of zegerid. Anyhow, that’s off topic. Here’s the link from before they started recommending amounts of mg of meds needed based on zegerid packets (when it was only based on drug types and not brand names).

As for how I got Hailey to take it, all I can say is that it’s been really challenging. Now I syringe it and she tries to run away and screams NO NO NO and cries, but I used to put it in her milk. She’s never liked it though, but it works well. We’ve never been able to use the solutabs with such frequent dosing and her being unpredictable with timing meals.
