I am the mother of Gracie 4 weeks old and from day one she has been hell on wheels. She has poor sleeping habits and is always crying and can never put her down and even when I hold her she cries. We thought it was colic at first but she didn’t fuss at one specific time during the day. Now we started Prevacid yesterday so I am hoping that works but i’m doubtful. I have to put it in her bottle of milk cause with syringe she spits it all back out at me. She is constantly grunting and straining like she has to poo but she goes about twice a day so I know she is not constipated can anyone give me any advice as to what this is. She always acts so uncomfortable and I have never heard a baby grunt and strain as much as she does. ANY HELP and advice would be greatly appreciated I am a working mother who takes care of baby and also brings baby to the office and takes care of her here so I never get a break. I am about to go insane I think. THanks for listening. 🙁
November 7, 2008 at 11:15 am #58431AnonymousInactiveI was also wondering if her straining and grunting could also be due to a protien allergy? We have her on Similac Sensitive right now could it be the formula making her do this all the time?
November 7, 2008 at 12:11 pm #58433AnonymousInactiveSimilac Sensitive is lactose free not cow protein free.
You may want to try either something like Goodstart or Gentlease as it will provide partially broken down cow milk proteins or go a step further and try Nutriminagen(Enfamil) or Alimentum (Similac) for further broken down proteins or cow protein free with Neocate.
November 7, 2008 at 2:15 pm #58438AnonymousInactiveThanks for the info. Do yall think that I should try a different formula? And should I start with something like Good Start before I try the other stuff? Or should I just stick with what i’m doing and just wait about 2 weeks to see if the Prevacid works? Does reflux also cause her to grunt and strain like she does?
November 7, 2008 at 4:22 pm #58445hellbenntKeymasteryes reflux causes grunting & straining- the grunting & straining are also most likely due to an intolerance or allergy- the only way to know is to switch formula to nutrimigen or alimentum- unfortunately it’s not a quick fix- it takes about 2 weeks of any formula change to see the full results- sometimes it gets worse before getting better so you have to ride out the 2 weeks- if after 2 weeks AND you get the meds figured out and you still think it’s intolerance/allergy then you would try neocate or elecare.
Read here and look for the links for the article giving the best explanation about the difference b/t intolerance and allergy AND look for hte link called ‘misconception about neocate’Mspi/allergy info(‘main page’): https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2697&PN=1&TPN=1
NEXT: PLEASE READ ABOUT PREVACID- it will not be effective in the milk!!! unless you are using ZEGERID or BUFFERBABIES/CARACREAM-
November 7, 2008 at 7:16 pm #58450AnonymousInactiveHi there…so sorry you are dealing with this too..
please read Laura’s post on prevacid– like she said, you can’t give it in the milk. are you using the capsules? the prevacid can also take a while to work.
I would definitely try the other formulas with 2 week trials.November 7, 2008 at 10:07 pm #58455hellbenntKeymasteroh & as I look at what I typed above: I in no way mean to sound like I’m giving you a ‘prescription’ or a ‘plan’ re: the formula- I really know nothing about formula – you may even give the current one a longer chance, all the while focusing on the meds- there are many options, that’s what so great about the forum-so much info to gather…
November 8, 2008 at 10:52 am #58467AnonymousInactiveCan you buy the hypo allergenic ones at the store or does a doctor have to prescribe them?
November 8, 2008 at 11:06 am #58468AnonymousInactiveYou can buy Nutramigen & Alimentum @ most stores (Target, Walmart, grocery, etc). The Neocate & Elecare are kept behind the counter @ pharmacies. I know many moms on here buy those from eBay though… or even from the Neocate website.
Someone correct me if I’m wrong please 🙂
November 8, 2008 at 11:14 am #58470AnonymousInactivethank you so much. She has a doc appointment on Monday but I think I am going to go ahead and try to switch. My husbands, his mother and her father all have milk issues that cause them gas and stomach pain so I’m thinking that she has the allergy and it must be hereditary. I dont know what else to do and she just grunts and strains with pain all day long. Never comfortable or content.
November 8, 2008 at 11:17 am #58471AnonymousInactiveThis was exactly how my ds was (never comfy or content) until we got his intolerances worked out.
Good Luck!
November 8, 2008 at 11:17 am #58472AnonymousInactiveIs one of those formulas better than the other? Any suggestions on which to try ?
November 8, 2008 at 5:56 pm #58478hellbenntKeymasterfrom all that I ‘know’ (being on the board five years and reading all about everything- but I do NOT have first-hand knowledge about formulas),
you might want to go for the RTF- Ready To Feed-I googled and it appears as though both Alimentum and Nutrimigen come in RTF so you might just want to go for whatever is easiest to find and/or least expensive of the twoNovember 8, 2008 at 10:01 pm #58488AnonymousInactiveAlimentum and Nutramigen are the same price here at our WalMart. They are about $27.00 for a small 16oz can of powder. You will pay much much more for hte RTF stuff. The quarts will run about $10.00 each.
You may find that once you get the right formula in then the suymptoms may lesses or disappear all together.Allergies are one of those things that sometimies gets DX as REflux when it isn’t. -
