My ds is 14 months old and has had silent reflux since birth. He was diagnosed at 2 months old and has been on Prevacid for over 1 year. He has been on a very high dose – 15 mg twice a day because it has never worked completely and it has to be that high for him to be comfortable. I have always complained ot the doctors that it doesn’t work completely and they have always been confused and said don;t worry he will grow out of it. Well he just passed a year and has not grown out of it adn I pushed for a throat scope and his throat was red. So the doctor said it could be cuased by stubborn reflux or food allergy. We are going for an endoscopy in 3 weeks. I amn wondering if anyone has had the experience where prevaic has not worked adn what the solution has been.

On an empty stomach, followed by food/milk 30-60min later? If you’re not administering it this way (assuming it’s not compounded/liquid Prevacid) then it’s likely not effective.

Ashlynn my 17 month old is still on Nexium, just when I think she has finally outgrown reflux I hear her make that dread sound. We go back to her GI dr for a follow in Dec and if she is still having problems they might do a scope. Ash has been on her Nexium since she was about 4 months old. Hopefully you and I can both find sonething out.November 12, 2008 at 2:25 pm #58599AnonymousInactiveHI Gianna,
I definitly feel your pain. My Gracie is NEVER comfortable and if she does doze off then she wakes herself up because she is grunting straining and uncomfortable. I’m sorry I have no advice nothing is working for me. They are doing an upper GI in the morning and blood work to make sure everything is functioning properly so I hope that I have answers. Just wanted to let you know I am in the same position as you with NO sleep and constant crying. I hope things get better for both of us.November 12, 2008 at 7:55 pm #58614AnonymousInactiveGood luck with teh upper GI tomorrow. Please let us know how you make out!
November 13, 2008 at 8:20 am #58625AnonymousInactiveThe meds never totally resolved the issue for Hailey but they definitely made things much much better. I’ve read that in some babies delayed release PPIs don’t work 100 percent because of the way the stomach empties. I don’t know too much about it… it’s marci-kids theory, party why they suggest delayed release. The other thing that comes to mind is food allergies or EE. Ask your doc to take a biopsy to check for eosinophilic esophagitis when he does the endoscopy. Good luck. If he’s still red, then they might want to try increasing the dose or a different med.
November 13, 2008 at 5:42 pm #58663AnonymousInactivejust wondering what a “throat scope” is? how is it different from an endoscopy?
November 13, 2008 at 8:05 pm #58670AnonymousInactiveIt is a larangothopy – or something like that – the ENT did it right in the office, its just a camera that they put down his throat, takes about 30 sec, he stays awake. They are able to see irritation but can’t determine what its from.
November 13, 2008 at 8:09 pm #58672hellbenntKeymasterthrush? esopogeal thrush?
November 13, 2008 at 8:50 pm #58677AnonymousInactiveI’m not familiar with that – would he have been able to see it when he looked down his throat with the camera? Would he have it for this long?
November 13, 2008 at 10:04 pm #58682AnonymousInactivei noticed he drinks milk. cows milk?? VERY likely he is intolerant to it! And .. it is making him reflux.. which is why he isnt stopping..and why the meds are not enough??
my son.. couldnt and still cant drink milk without refluxing… and i just started having acid reflux since being pregnant..and everytime i drink milk.. it acts up really bad.November 13, 2008 at 11:49 pm #58685AnonymousInactivewhen kassie had esophageal thrush it was found when she had her endoscopy done. it looked like white spots all down her esophagus—but the doc said it was either thrush or food allergies—he couldn’t say without the microscopic report. if i can find the picture of that scope i will post it with my other pics.
