at 4 am trace woke up which is not normal for him-he was screaming like someone was murdering him. i tried to feed him but he only ate a little. then he was up screaming.
thismorning he woke up agian barely ate, and was screaming.i mean SCREAMING.
i gave him some tylenol and he slept for about 4 hours!
he woke up and was fine for about 2 hours. then all of a sudden started the screaming. he sounds like he is dying! i have never heard him cry like this.
fil says its teething-i find it hard to belive he would cry this hard and loud. though he is chewing on everything.
could this be an ear infection with no fever?the only thing different in the past couple days is going from 12 mg zegerid 3 times to 14 mg 3 times a day.
ahh stuff always happens when there is no doc in the office!!
help….September 3, 2006 at 8:35 pm #12893AnonymousInactiveMyles has twice had ear infections with no fever. The first time I was at the doctor for something else and they happened to check his ears. He’d been irritable but I didn’t suspect an ear infection at all.
Just two weeks ago he began crying and screaming. No fever. He’s kind of an ornery kid so I didn’t think he was sick. I waited 3 days (how utterly stupid of me) and finally took him to the doctor. Sure enough….ear infection. I was surprised because he did not have a fever. I’ll never wait again if he’s crying or screaming more than usual.
Motrin did seem to take the edge off his pain, but I think Trace might be too young. Is there a walk-in clinic or on-call nurse you can call until the doctor’s office opens on Tuesday? Where I live we can call the ER and talk to the on-call physician without bringing the child in if it’s just a question like, “Can I give him Motrin?” If he seems to be in a lot of pain or gets a fever I’d just take him to the ER.
Good luck. I hope it passes soon.
September 3, 2006 at 9:13 pm #12896AnonymousInactiveSorry he’s having such a bad time. Yes, things always seem to happen over the weekend! I’d say that seems a bit extreme to be teething, but stranger things have happened. As for the ear infection, none of my kids have ever had fever with ear infection. Just extreme irritability and crying.
September 3, 2006 at 11:01 pm #12900AnonymousInactiveSame here, Kayla never had a fever with an ear infection – just screaming and not wanting to drink. Holiday weekends are so frustrating but I would definitely take him to ER if things don’t get better.
Good luck and hang in there

September 4, 2006 at 12:20 am #12903AnonymousInactiveHi Natalia,
It could be an earache that hasn’t turned into an infection yet. Or even a sore throat. Is there an Instacare in your area??September 4, 2006 at 1:04 am #12904AnonymousInactivethanks guys
we went to the ER
i hate er s, the doctors are idiotsanyway he said “it looks kinda red” and “could be an infection”
ugh cant i get a yes or no?
so they gave me a script for amoxicillin.
my mom told me that antibiotics never worked on my brother,, and she just had to keep warm packs by his ears. apparently the infections were viral, not bacterial.
anyone ever experience that?September 4, 2006 at 9:01 am #12905AnonymousInactiveDoes he have a cold or any other viral symptoms? If not, my guess would be bacterial. My kids ear infections for the most part were bacterial. But I do know that my grandmother always told me that they used to do hot packs as well.
September 4, 2006 at 9:40 am #12906AnonymousInactiveWhen Myles had his last ear infection (only two weeks ago) we were given Amoxicillin (a pretty high dose, mind you) and it did nothing for him. Five days later he was just as miserable. I figured it was viral, BUT when I brough him back in they put him on Zithromax and that cleared it up in a few days. Sometimes it is bacterial but a lot of these strains have become resistant to certain antibiotics. If he’s not better soon I would ask to try Zithromax before assuming it’s viral. Good luck.
I hope he’s better soon.
BTW, with all three of my children Zithromax seems to do the trick, while the other antibiotics they’ve been on (amoxicillin and omnicef) never seem to work.
September 4, 2006 at 9:52 am #12907AnonymousInactiveI think I’ve only had one time when the amoxicillin didn’t work for an ear infection (and my boys have had tons of ear infections!) and he just ended up needing augmentin instead. Every other time it usually made a huge difference very quickly. I think every child is different though with medicines.
I hope he gets feeling better soon either way. I know it breaks your heart when your little baby is sick.September 4, 2006 at 10:59 am #12910AnonymousInactiveKaelyn never had any signs of an ear infection except fussiness and not sleeping. Most of the time, amox worked to clear it up. Twice she has needed augmentin to do it.
September 4, 2006 at 11:27 am #12912AnonymousInactiveokay…the amox can be given with or without formula right?
September 4, 2006 at 1:05 pm #12915AnonymousInactiveYes, with or without food. My pharmacist said with food is better only in that it may help prevent stomach upset, but the medicine will work either way.
I hope he’s better soon.
September 4, 2006 at 9:39 pm #12928AnonymousInactivethanks….we are now on amox.
Trace is having some problems with feedings …after about half the
bottle he cries like it hurts to suck. this CAN happen with ear
infections right? because his PPI dose is way high and i really dont
think its that.September 5, 2006 at 9:25 am #12938AnonymousInactiveOh yeah, sucking does hurt when they have an ear infection. I bet in a day or so, you will have a totally different Trace. Hope he feels better soon!!

September 5, 2006 at 9:25 am #12939AnonymousInactiveDefinitely, yes. All three of my babies ate much less when they had ear infections. I think it’s a combination of the pain from the ear infection and probably some stomach upset from the antibiotics.
I hope he’s feeling better soon.
