Hello all…
My name is Shawna and I am the mommy of 2 beautiful little ones. Sierra age 3 and Tony age 11 months. I am in need of advice and hopefully someone here can help. When my son Tony was born we were breastfeeding. He cried out in pain constantly, horrible gas pains, projectile vomiting, up to 20 soiled dipes a day, and they were mucusy. ( sorry tmi) I was constantly at the pedi’s office demanding answers or at least advice. They were totally ignored, claiming he was just a normal BF baby. Due to other circumstances, Tony refused to latch for a few days and when he was ready to I dried up. So we tried, Cow based formula and his symptoms got worse instantly. Our pedi at the time, changed him to Soy based formula and still no change. I finally got in to see another pedi in the practice and he tested TJ’s bm and found acute blood. He said it was MSPI and put us on Alimentum in addition to GERD. We have had lower and upper GI test done. He has done awesome on the Alimentum. I changed pedi’s and am at a new office with dr’s that I love. now at 10 months old. Tony started to refuse the Alimentum. He would drink his juice and water out of the sippy fine but refused to drink the formula. After a week of him not drinking any formula our new pedi told us to switch to Whole milk, saying that Tony should have outgrown his allergy to milk. So that weekend we did. He loved it and drank it instantly. He only drank 6 oz of Whole Milk. but he started projectile vomiting again and diarreah the rest of the weekend. After that weekend Tony started drinking his formula again.. lmbo. Well this freaked me out so I made an appt with are allergist ( advice of pedi) to find out for sure. Tony’s appt was yesterday and they did the back prick test and the scratch test for milk, soy and rice. All of which came back negative and the allergist said Tony wasn’t allergic he was lactose intolerant. I just don’t understand. The allergist told me to switch Tony to Soy milk and try whole milk again in 6 months. I am not comfortable with doing this. I do not want my son to suffer again. But I cant afford to keep him the Alimentum passed 1 year. So any advice or help is welcome. PLEASE HELP.
Is MSPI, MIlk Allergy the same?
November 26, 2008 at 3:48 pm #59012AnonymousInactiveHi there,
we were also negative on the allergy tests, but Dylan has GI reactions that won’t show up as skin reactions, so I call him “intolerant” as he is not necessarily “allergic” but can not handle the whole milk and he is now 5. He can do cheese, yogurt, pizza, etc in small doses, so it is very easy to feed him, but can not drink the whole milk, so we do enriched rice milk with him and have done it since a year old. Weight gain was not an issue at that point for him so the less fat was not a problem, and the enriched has the same vitamins and calcium as the rice milk. Is this an option for you?November 26, 2008 at 4:24 pm #59014hellbenntKeymasterhi & welcome!
yes there seems to a ‘misunderstanding’ somehow in the (majority?) of the medical community about intolerances vs allergies. This should help, I think:
Accuracy of allergy testing & great post by sherri explaining IgE and IgG (intolerance/allergies) https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=10815
Allergies-PATCH, panel, RAST testing, etc- allergies & intolerances, too:
