I’m pretty sure I have a breast infection or at least a clogged duct, but the pain isn’t going away, which makes me think it’s an infection. I REALLY don’t want to take antibiotics, because we finally just got my son’s system regulated with the probiotics, and I’m afraid antibiotics will wreak havoc on his poor digestive track.
Has this happened to anyone else? I’m not really sure what to do. I need to feel better, but I’ve read that antibiotics basically wipe out any job probiotics are doing, and the probiotics are doing WONDERS for him.
I know I could pump for a few weeks and not give him any of the antibiotic milk, but that seems like much too much work, and I’m more apt. to throw in the towel on breast feeding if I have to do that.
I’m also terrified to give him formula, because we haven’t given it to him, and I have no idea how he will react. My diet isn’t restricted, but he seems to have such a sensitive tummy that it just scares me.
Any thoughts at all? Please help!
October 2, 2012 at 8:47 am #71011AnonymousInactiveWhen Quinton was only a couple of weeks old I got mastitis. I suppose I had antibiotics. 🙁 GRRRR!! I had forgotten about that. I knew I’d had antibiotics right after he was born because of my low grade fever in labor. (Which now I believe was from the epidural) Yes, I believe all the antibiotics played a HUGE part in his digestive system being messed up. 🙁
I’m glad the probiotics are helping so much. 🙂 I don’t have any answers at this point but will do some researching and asking and will come on here again today and let you know what I find out that you can maybe do instead of antibiotics. Because I would not want to take antiobiotics either! 🙁

October 2, 2012 at 7:17 pm #71013AnonymousInactiveWell, here are a couple of ideas…
Grapefruit seed extract is a really good antibacterial. And so is coconut oil.
I had some other ideas but I accidentally deleted the page where I had them all written. 🙁
I hope you find something to work.

October 2, 2012 at 8:11 pm #71019hellbenntKeymasterI had plugged ducts! you’ll know it’s an infection if you get a fever 🙁
I had one (infection) once & I didn’t take antibiotics-HOT SHOWERS- as hot as you can tolerate- and masage the breast – feel for hardened ducts and massage them until milk comes outLECETHIN! get it at whole foods. if you’re watching your diet, I do believe it’s soy lethicin? but I also think that moms on a mspi diet can have soy lecithin? Oh! you’re not on a restricted diet, great!also: sounds/feels counter-intuitive, but feed from hurt side first- baby is way more efficient than a pump- he’ll help to clear it out- nurse often from that sideOctober 4, 2012 at 9:09 pm #71026hellbenntKeymasterhow’s it going?
October 13, 2012 at 7:43 am #71054AnonymousInactiveThanks for asking! I was able to use some natural remedies, pump and feeds lot and get it to go away. I’m not sure if it was a duct or infection, but I was do g.ad it subsided, it was so painful!
The good thing is, it forced me to try some formula with him, which I need to do eventually. We’ve been giving him the Similac Sensitive, one bottle a day, and he seems to be tolerating it well, which I’m very relieved about!
