Hello!
I am so thankful that I found this site! I had my daughter Emmie on 9/10/11 @ 33 weeks. She did really well and was released from the NICU at 35 weeks and 3 days. I noticed while she was in the NICU that after I would feed her, she would arch her back, turn her head to the side, and flex both arms and legs. She seemed to be in pain, but being a new mother, I thought I was just not burping her correctly. After 2 weeks being home, she started to scream at night (not cry, but scream!). The doctor told me that she was just overstimulated. Then she started to cry during the day and night – even while she was in a deep sleep. She also started to scream/cry after feeding and she started to take less expressed breastmilk. I did enough research and thought she had reflux. I bought the book “Colic Solved” and insisted that the doctor put her on PPI. After listening to me, he put her on Prevacid (7.5mg every day – suspension form) and gave me a referral to see a ped GI doctor.
I went to the GI doctor and he was a JERK! He asked me one question – why was we were there. When I answered that we were there due to reflux, he said that all infants had reflux. When I said that she screams in pain after eating and she is now eating half of her normal amount, he said that was “normal”. He also told me that infants do not have pain with reflux, I was horrified! I went on Vitals.com and found that he had 1.5 stars out of 5! Gee, go figure.
Anyway, my ped doctor was pretty horrified about my appt as well. He said that he could just treat her. He seems willing to give me whatever medication that I want and whatever form I want it in. My daughter seems to be doing better on the prevacid, however I will admit that I started giving her 6mg twice daily, not the 7.5mg once a day. Is this too much? She weighs 6 pounds 10 ounces. Do you think I should keep her on the suspension or the solutabs? Maybe the Zegerid powder packets??
Also, do you think I should go to another GI doctor? I live in the Chicago area and there are plenty of doctors to chose from (not that I now which one is the best). I just want to do what is best for my daughter!
Thanks so much in advance! I can’t begin to tell you how much I appreciate any response!

you’ve found a great place!
I have a LOT to say and most of it’s here, in a link called ‘groupie intro.‘
it’s looong but TRULY will help you- read through it, refer back to it, scroll through it/skim through it. You’ll find yourself coming back to it!
https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=853Please read:
Prevacid 101:
scroll to the last page of this post, (it’s actually also about other PPIs like prilosec, too)
https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1936&PN=0&TPN=1I would say to get zegerid:“Remember to get 40mg packets only – not 20mg packets; and remember add 6.5mL water to the powder (in a syringe) and shake – then add 10mL Mylanta Cherry Supreme-
remember 40mg packets not 20mg packets (because the 20mg packets and 40mg packets have the exact same amt of sodium bicarbonate) so per each mg of dose, the 20mg ends up with twice as much bicarb (too much)
Keep in refrigerator and it is stable for a week”
I emailed Dr Philips for more exact instructions! Also: Please post about your terrible Ped GI & see if there’s anyone else in your area who parents recommend:Looking for GI: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=660
there are recommendations for ped GIs in your area…
