Ok so little Ethan is having a horrible day. Does Zantac cause gas? The poor kid is soooo uncomfy he is grunting and grunting like he needs to poop, but just pooped. He will grunt then scream in pain. i even went as far to video tape it so that we can take it to the dr with us. I just dont know what the heck to do. He has 7.5 mg of the prevacid this morning and is going to get a dose yet tonight. I also switched his formula yesterday to the Similac Alimentum ready made because it is much thicker so I have hopes he can keep that down. He also has had the hiccups terrible today, and we had been doing so good with not having them.

I bought the simply thick and am thinking i would like to take him off the Reglan. The side effects just seem terrible and i wonder if they are not making his cramping and gas worse. Has anyone dealt with Before?
April 26, 2008 at 8:13 am #50891AnonymousInactiveI would not think Zantac caused gas, maybe the Prevacid. My 8 week old daughter has terrible gas, on the colic side more so. They get gas from also from crying and gulping their bottles. Ava can poop and have gas a few minutes later. It takes a while for their system to adjust. Hang in there
KarenApril 26, 2008 at 8:22 am #50892hellbenntKeymasterReglan is for Delagyed Gastrci Emptying (DGE). reglan and zantac seem to be the first meds prescribed by peds, “Just Because.” It’s probably just what they were taught and that’s that. Jonah was even prescribed reglan in the nicu and they had DONE testing and they pretty much knew he didn’t have DGE. Personally, in retrospect, I think they gave it to him to cover their butts legally- he was having apnea episodes (stopped breathing) and rather than have a dead newborn on their hands, they figured the possible risks of reglan, and the help it MIGHT provide, sure outweighed the apnea episodes.
anyway, there’s a lot of bad hype about reglan, but it has worked wonders for some babies, with diagnosed/VERIFIED DGE, in small doses. there ARE other motility drugs out there such as bethanecol (sp?) and erythromyacin (sp?)…I feel that if a baby has been given the stomach emptying scan (this is not just an Upper GI- it’s a specific test looking for DGE) and doesn’t respond well to other drugs, then by all means trying reglan is worth it…
April 26, 2008 at 12:18 pm #50899AnonymousInactiveOk just an update for all. Ethan has been having a horrible day. He has thrown up his bottles and has hiccups and gas so bad. I called the doctor this morning and he said to give him mylecon or maaalox. Well my kid is not a science project. So I called the Univeristy of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics…BEST PLACE EVER> It is comparable to Mayo Clinic!!! My husband had cancer and did his treatments there. Anywhoo I spoke with the on call ped gastronoligst and told him what was going on. HE said to stop the Reglan right away. He also said that Ethan did not need the maalox because he has enough acid meds in his system. He asked if the doctors had done any test to determine what he has and I said no. He said that is the first thing that needs to be done. So we have an appoitment monday morning at 9:30, and the doctor is on call all weekend and said it was his pleasure to help me and to call if I needed anything. WOW a doctor who finally listens and is willing to help. There is a god out there!!!! Now just to make it until Monday. Where did the weekends go where all I had to do was worry about supper and maybe a beer or two. He also said Ethan does not need to be on the Similac Alimentum formula, he jokingly said that stuff smells horrible. So hopefully Monday we can get the right formula and find out exactly what is wrong. And if the poor little guy has colic why does he sleep at night???? I told the dr that they kept saying it was colic and he said that test need to be done to make sure nothing is wrong with his inners. So a two hour ride Monday to the dr will be well worth it. BUT I have to call our regulaur doc monday to get a referal because doctor said some insurances wont cover without a referal. Anyone know how blue cross blue shield works? I guess at this point if he will not give me a referal I will pay for it out of pocket.

I am glad you find a good doc. BC/BS plan usually follow these guidelines:Traditional/PPO no referralPOS/HMO referral, but NJ Blue Cross just changed, what does your card say exactlyKaren -
