I have a 10 week old that was diagnosed with Reflux about a week ago. he was breastfed until he was 6 weeks old then he was put on a soy formula. He was on that for about 2 weeks then he started vomiting that up and was screaming with and after feeding. He was then put on Zantac which did nothing. So he was switched to prevacid. This seems to help a little. He has been on Enfamil AR for about a week and now is starting to vomit it up and scream with each feeding as he did with the soy. I have no idea what to do now. HELP

November 15, 2011 at 1:08 pm #69368AnonymousInactiveDid your doctor recommend soy formula because they suspect a milk intolerance? And did you switch to Enfamil AR because of the vomitting experienced with soy formula?
I think you should consider asking your doctor about using a hydrolysate formula like Nutramigen or Alimentum. These formulas are still milk based but they are made up of partially broken down protein chains, making them easier for babies who are sensitive to milk proteins to digest. It could be that your LO has a milk soy protein intolerance (MSPI) especially since he was having trouble with soy too.If you do decide to switch just be sure to give it time (a good 2 wks) before switching again or deciding it’s not working, your LO needs time to adjust to the new formula.November 16, 2011 at 7:42 am #69371hellbenntKeymasterAsk about neocate or elecare- read this & decide for yourself:
read about MSPI (milk soy protein intolerance) so that you have a good idea of what you’re dealing with:best EXPLANATION OF FOOD ALLERGIES/INTOERANCES and their RELATION TO REFLUX that I have found, to date: 2nd post: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2697&PN=2
figure out PROPER dose of prilosec and TELL doctor you need a RX for the 40mg packets of ZEGERID (long story why you need to ask for Zegerid- but the short version is that it’s a stable compound, meaning liquid, that you can give at any time. If you’re giving solutabs you must give on an empty stomach, followed by a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later.)
Prevacid 101:
scroll to the last page of this post, (it’s actually also about other PPIs like prilosec, too)

And at first he seemed to be doing better. The fussiness had definitely decreased! Today was day 5 of nutramigen and he started projectile vomiting this evening after both his bottles!! We also went to a chiropractor today at the suggestion of friends! Should I give the formula longer? We are putting rice cereal in his bottles to help keep it down already!
December 14, 2011 at 11:20 pm #69559AnonymousInactiveI would try to give it more time if you can, the rule of thumb is usually a solid two weeks with any formula change. And I’m not sure about the rice cereal in the bottles, you may want to consider not doing that for a few reasons, one your LO might not be ready for grains yet, they’re hard to digest, and second you may be able to get a clearer picture of what is bothering your LO if you’re only using formula, YKWIM?
I would say if you continue with Nutramigen and things don’t improve you may need to switch to an elemental formula. Elemental formulas are made up of free amino-acids (the building blocks of proteins), so they are easy to digest. It may be that your LO is sensitive to the partial proteins still found in Nutramigen.Hang in there!December 15, 2011 at 8:39 am #69562AnonymousInactiveThanks !!!! I’m gonna gradually decrease the cereal in his bottles and see how he does! I have a can of elecare on hand which I guess will be my next step!! I decreased the cereal in his bottle this morning and now hes spitting up clear instead of chunky! I feel like I am trying everything!!
December 20, 2011 at 5:06 pm #69581AnonymousInactiveSo we have officially started Elecare. And now we are on day 5. After a week on Nutramigen LO started projectile vomiting. Now on day 5 of Elecare and it seems as if he is throwing it all up. The fussiness does seem to have decreased though. But now it seems as if that might be coming back too. I am tempted to put him back on Enfamil AR as he did keep most of that down. He just screamed all the time. Any suggestions on what to do now??

January 4, 2012 at 2:47 am #69633AnonymousInactiveI went this same route, trying many many different formulas! The truth is, breast milk rarely produces allergies, it is the safest way to go! Most babies with reflux have an under developed les flap because they were premature or something internal rather than allergies. A RES-q wedge to help them sleep at night at an angle will help wonders. I am looking to get rid of mine because my baby grew out of his reflux at 10 months! Please let me know if you could use it… [email protected]
January 4, 2012 at 2:49 am #69634AnonymousInactiveIf the elecare does not work, it is probably not an allergy! Breast milk is rarely allergenic and most babies with reflux have an internal under-developement. I regret switching to formula so bad! Have you heard of the RES-Q Wedge? It will help your LO sleep longer and keep more food down. I have one mine has grown out of, if you are interested!
January 4, 2012 at 8:58 pm #69646AnonymousInactiveNo I have not heard of the res q wedge but he was tested today and tested negative for MSPI. We also saw a GI specialist today and we are back on Prevacid but double the dose he was on before. He seems to think we are definitely dealing with reflux! If you don’t want the wedge I am defiantely interested !!
January 4, 2012 at 9:13 pm #69647hellbenntKeymasterdon’t know about the AR pillow but have this link saved:
https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=14191There is a ton of research showing that babies should not have flexed legs, that it can aggravate reflux.
