Trace tripped and slammed his chin which he then bit his tongue with his two bottom teeth. he has been bleeding since 2 and its now 5:30. its worse when he sucks on the bottle. my mother is saying there is nothing they can do if i take him to the ER (and she is a nurse) but like i said before i dont really trust her. i am starting to wonder if he needs his tongue stitched?
what should i do, i have tried cold things, they arent helping…

Can you see if he has a significant gash? It’s hard to say, it’s possible he might need stitches, I’m not sure what they do for tongue injuries… Hope it stops soon!
March 24, 2007 at 6:37 pm #28397AnonymousInactiveCan you see where he bit it? Does it look very deep? Is it bleeding continuously, or just a little here and there? Sorry for all the questions! If it’s not bleeding continuously, it might just be reopening every time he moves his tongue, and I think eventually it will close up, but if it looks deep and is bleeding quite a bit, then you might want to have it checked. Is there an on-call doctor you could call? These things always have to happen on the weekend don’t they? Hope he’s okay.
March 24, 2007 at 6:54 pm #28399AnonymousInactiveOh, no! I hope he’s ok.
I think if it’s bleeding continuallly I’d take him to the ER, but if it’s stopping or slowing down and then starting up again when he eats, I’d probably wait it out a little.
Maybe an ice pop would help.

March 24, 2007 at 8:39 pm #28406AnonymousInactiveThis happened to Hailey. It was horrible, we couldn’t stop the bleeding. It went on for hours and hours. When I told the supervisor at the daycare on Monday what had happened, she said that when that happens they give them a spoonful of maple syrup. She said it’s an old remedy, but stops the bleeding almost immediately.
We never got the chance to try it, but just in case you’re desperate.
March 24, 2007 at 9:58 pm #28417AnonymousInactivethanks everyone. i called the doc on call and she said to bring him in…this as at 6 and she said 4 hours of bleeding was pretty long, and also mentioned all the bllod vessels. she said he would need stitches probably. well right after that he finally stopped bleeding, so we didnt go. thank God, i got sick just thinking about them having to stitch up his tongue!!!
March 24, 2007 at 10:40 pm #28418AnonymousInactiveOh good! I’m glad it finally stopped bleeding and you didn’t have to take him in.
March 25, 2007 at 8:09 am #28427AnonymousInactivePhew! glad it stopped. Next time it happens over here, I’m going to try the syrup. Apparently it aids clotting.
March 25, 2007 at 9:29 am #28431AnonymousInactiveGood news, Natalia! I’m glad he’s ok.
March 25, 2007 at 2:23 pm #28442AnonymousInactiveoh good! I am glad Trace is OK.
March 25, 2007 at 7:40 pm #28461AnonymousInactiveSo glad he is okay! That was so scary I am sure! Addy tripped one day in Kindermusik class and bit her tongue and it didn’t stop bleeding for awhile…I was a nervous wreck!!!! I am so happy that the bleeding stopped and he is okay!
March 27, 2007 at 12:13 am #28626AnonymousInactiveOh goodness I hope Trace is doing better! Poor guy
Just to help out if anyone else has this sort of thing happen. Try giving them a little bit of sugar. It helps aid in clotting probably like the maple syrup tip. I wet a washcloth in very cold water then dip it into some sugar so we get the cold to ease swelling and the sugar to help stop the blood. Also alot of peds recommend popsicles for the same reasons.
