My baby is almost 7 weeks old, and has been having signs of progressing silent reflux. He cries and arches his back during breastfeeding, (I’ve already cut out dairy) he winces and coughs and chokes. He produces gnarly wet burp and cries/winces in pain. I can hear him swallow at night and whimper and I know something is coming back up!
We started on zantac which did nothing (we had about 1 good morning) and the doc prescribed prevacid. I cannot for the life of me get him to take it! Yesterday I tried and he choked and threw up his whole feed! Although I notice that when he actually throws up there is no pain, while when he gets the silent it hurts him a lot.
Any ideas on how to give him the meds? Isn’t he too young for apple sauce? those damn beads don’t dissolve and when mashed it forms a thick paste! I’m so desperate as he is literally crying all day and sleeping very poorly at night.
Another note, He is constantly wanting to feed to comfort his throat. The ped says to “let him” but he is gaining weight like crazy! I was wondering if there was anything else (water, juice) that I could give him that would help to soothe his throat without having to be his personal pacifier. Oh, and he doesn’t take a paci.
I am soooo desperate as I literally cannot put him down or else he’ll cry and choke. When I pick him up and he’s in pain he’ll scream in my ears and that adds up after a few hours I’m in tears too. I fear damage in his throat and the doc doesn’t really call me back. Please somebody, give me some advice. I can call the doc again, but my hubby doesn’t want me appearing to be a crazy calling mom. He’s finally come around to admitting our boy has reflux but he’s not as supportive of it as I’d like.
Sorry for the essay but please someone..

As far as being crazy… reflux babies just make us mamas get that way. When my boys were suffering so badly I was worried I was going to loose my mind and never regain it. I cried MANY MANY tears too. I was SO at my wits end.
If you have time you can read my full story about what all we went through. http://help4acidreflux.wordpress.com/a-detailed-account-of-what-all-we-went-through-with-our-children/
One thing I would HIGHLY recommend is giving your little one probiotics. Probiotics are the good live bacteria that coat and protect out entire digestive tract. Many babies are low on them anyway but for sure babies with any kind of digestive problems. You can buy probiotics in powder form, in capsules or just in a tub, and mix the powder with a little milk or water and give to baby. For us this has worked quite quickly. You can also buy probiotics in liquid form. I have never used liquid ones but assume they would work too to soothe the throat quickly.
It sounds to me like your little one could really benefit from digestive enzymes too. Digestive enzymes aid in breaking down food. Proteins in particular. And it’s most often the protein in dairy that causes baby to scream and be in pain because they can’t break them down.
But you yourself can take probiotics and digestive enzymes and they will get to your baby. 🙂 This will help your milk to be more broken down and easier for baby to digest. Read here… http://help4acidreflux.wordpress.com/should-i-quit-nursing-and-go-to-formula/
There is lots of good info on my blog so please look around. If you don’t have time to read the detailed account that I gave a link to, then please at least take the time to read my home page.
There are many types of digestive enzyme and probiotic supplements being sold out there and some work and some don’t. We use “Digestive Health” sold by Core Health Products. It contains both probiotics and digestive enzymes. This is what has helped my children and many more find relief.
