Sorry I dont post as much as a should, I think I feel like I still dont know much even though its been 6 months…

anyways today I had Audrey’s 6 month appt with her ped, who I usually love but he was not so cool today…ever since we saw our ped GI our regular ped has been aloof..whatever….I asked about solids and her issues with them still and he just said…talk to her specialist…which is what im going to do, but I thought id get his opinion too…

oh and why do vax’s have to irritate reflux? argh…she slept through the night for the first time ever last night and now I bet she wont cuz of her vac’s….also now we have to add plagiocephaly to her list of problems..at 4 months they mentioned it and were watching and now we have a consult with a craniofacial specialist…it seems to be an issue with the reflux kids, Im thinking from the swing sleeping and the carseat sleeping stuff..but Audrey hasnt been sleeping in those for 2 months, she has tons of tummy time, she sits up, shes in her excersaucer and I wear her alot…and at night she lays on her side, her non flat side..so I dont get it….

my son has plagio and wears a docband. i have been absolutely astonished at the progress he has made with it. he also has facial asymetry and ear misalignement. though from far away you cant notice but if you take a close look is def. there. you can read about the doc band at cranialtech.com.
my sons flat spot was caused by positional plagio, meaning the way he was inside my womb. i am pretty tiny and he didnt have much room in there and he was smashed pretty much. and also sleeping in the swing didnt help-he developed torticollis in his neck and goes to physical therapy and also the chiropractor once in a while. the chiro is amazing and i am so pleased with that. chiros are also known to imrrove reflux and overall digestive health.

im not sure about vacs irritating reflux but they def irritate my son in many more ways, anyway i have been resereaching and have decided to hold off on his shots, i may just discontinue them all together. he hasnt had anything past 4 month shots. aidanstiredmom on here gave me a ton of useful info.

Thanks for the info on the doc band…Yeah Audrey was a preemie so they were watching it a bit from birth as she too was crammed, but they never seemed super worried and now they are since there is some assymetry…which I didnt totally notice until it was pointed out, she does has a flat spot on the side of her head in back as well…not fun, these kids just cant catch a break

Yeah Ive aware of all the vax issues, and I selectively vaccinate (I used to work with Autistic kids so I have heard all the latest). I didnt get the flu shot or the rotavirus vax,but did get the pediarix….and shes been all refluxy since…but seems to be calmly sleeping for now…

Hi Shannon,
I’m sorry to hear about Audrey’s plagiocephaly. My son had plagio too. He had to wear a helmet (starband) for about 3 months, but it dramatically changed his head shape. It looks great now! It’s best the earlier you can start, so it’s good you caught it as early as you did. I was worried about my son because we didn’t find out about the helmet until he was 9 months old, and sometimes the head doesn’t change much after that age. Luckily it worked wonderfully for Bryce anyway – and quickly too.

I think Bryce got his plagiocephaly from having to sleep in the carseat when he was first diagnosed with reflux.

Sorry to hear about your doctor’s aloofness. That sure doesn’t feel good. Maybe he was just having a bad day.

Anyway Liza was not a reflux baby but she had a pretty bad case of plagiocephaly. It’s becoming so common since the back to sleep campaign. When babies slept on their tummies you never heard of plagiocephaly. For Liza it probably ocurred because I always put her down on her right side for sleep. You’re supposed to alternate positions for side sleeping infants, but of course no one told me that until it was too late. Anyway we caught her’s early enough to correct it just by alternating positions, and some physio exercises at home for her torticolis.

When is her appt with the cranio guy? I hope it goes well. Please keep us posted.

Her appt is next wednesday, thanks for asking…yeah I have done lay her different ways in the crib (well 2 ways since she is still on a wedge) but she moves so much at night now, but she ends up laying not on her flat side, so who knows

Its good to know that she;s not the only one….do when your kids got there bands how did they adjust to it?

We did a 5 day “break-in” period for Bryce, and that really helped him adjust to the helmet. The first day he wore it for 1hr on 1hr off, cycling it all day. The 2nd day it was 2hr on 1 hr off, and so on. He didn’t have any problems with it at all. Except at one point he figured out how to take the velcro strap off that held it on. He slept fine with it on and everything.

Thanks for the info..Ill know more next week what we are in for, but the breaking in period sounds good, and its nice to know he slept well with it on…

Audreys head is so big I cannot imagine her with anything on to make it even bigger (its always been 95% for circumference)…I hope if she needs a band/helmet that it wont effect her balance too much…she didnt sit well until recently cuz her head was always too big for her body (the rest of her is 50% or less)

Hopefully you can get one like we had, which is supposedly one of the lightest weight ones. (Although it was still 6 oz!) We had one called a Starband that was clear plastic. It was nice. My OT told me about another baby she worked with that had one of the helmets with some kind of padding inside and it was so heavy the baby couldn’t hold his head up at first. Bryce didn’t have a problem with his.

Hopefully, as was posted earlier, he was having a bad day. Lord knows we all have those.

That said, should that attitude continue…find yourself a new ped..

I JUST read an article in the Chicago Tribune (I live in COlumbus, my parents often clip and send articles from “home”) that specifically talked about doctors who become angry when their patients either A) get second opinions…or B) go to a specialist. This article (written by one of the top Internal Med docs in Chicago) said that such doctors are not good doctors. A good doctors recognizes a patients need to get answers…especially when the he/she can’t give then readily.

It might be hard…but consider that. You deserve support and a gentle hand when going through this. Not arrogance and ego.

Thanks…interesting about the article…yeah my dh and I were wondering about that issue…but he’s the one who referred us (to 2 specialists now) I hope he was just having a bad day…as he is also our ped for our son and is so good with him…but yeah if it continues I already have a back-up ped to check out (recco’s from friends)
