What should I do? My baby hates the taste of Nutramigen. I diluted it in his regular formula (2 ounces of Nutramigen to 4 ounces of milk-based)- which he normally chugs down- and he can tell the difference right away. Is there a way to disguise the taste? Karo syrup? Should I try Alimentum and give up on Nutramigen all together? What about skipping the trial and going straight to allergy testing? Is that ever an option with a 9 month old baby? How traumatic is it? Can they tell if an infant has a milk allergy with a blood test?

Also, I have heard that some babies like one or the other (nutramigen/alimentum). I remember trying all sorts of formulas with kaden when he was little and he hated nutramigen but liked Alimentum, but we ended up on soy.lastly, I wouldn’t recommend a blood food allergy test (RAST). This is just me. It was kind of traumatic and everything came back negative (there is NO way). Landen has intolerances AND allergic reactions and I know that the test has high false positive and negative rates. I read more about this AFTER we had his blood draw done and still feel guilty to this day about it. We are seeing an allergist in July for Landen and Aug. for Kaden to get the more accurate skin prick test done. Just wanted to share our experience. 🙂Good luck with whatever u decide with the formula!May 31, 2008 at 3:53 pm #51991AnonymousInactiveI use Splenda. 2 packets per 6 ounce bottle. This is what our ped GI suggested. We started with 4 packets per bottle and have worked backwards to 2. Definitely ask a dr first to make sure. There are healthier alternatives out there like zylitol. Zylitol is a natural sweetener. You can pick that up at health food stores.
Since we are being honest today, I admit I use the Splenda b/c it is just easier for me. I can buy a whole big box of Splenda packets that lasts forever. There I came clean.Honestly, I am just happy that he takes his bottles now. We got to a bad point and if we hadn’t got on the Elecare when we did, I think we would have had bad aversions or a feeding tube. As one mom said to me about her baby, “I would let him eat Burger King if that meant he would actually eat something.”June 17, 2008 at 4:47 pm #52713AnonymousInactiveSorry I didn’t see this sooner, but I will say for anyone else who finds this thread, my son flat out refused Nutramigen. Besides, it seemed so thin that it made his reflux worse. We switched him to Alimentum and he was just fine.
Recently we tried soy formula too and it turns out he’s one of the many kids who is both dairy AND soy intolerant.
