well I have been coming to this forum for weeks now to find support. Now I am really going crazy.
At her 2 week checkup the ped said she had silent reflux. I told the ped i was having a really hard time feeding her-she was doing great before that- She is breastfed-won´t take more than 2 oz in a bottle. So we started the useless zantac, then after 10 days, she was covered in a rash(head, back and chest) and was having FOUL smelling gas, I mean foull like a 40 year old truck driver! And a lot of it.Today she has been on prevacid compounded by a pharmacy for a week at the chime of 5MG day I have since gone off dairy as we think it may be MPI . She feeds every two hours (which leads me to think that a possible foremilk/hindmilk imbalance may be contributing to her pain). She had a great day of no pain, feed every 4 and feeding well. Then it all went down hill. The last two days she has been crying in`pain passing tons of gas, pooped twice in 2 days(before she was going every other day). She cries and all she wants os the breast for comfort so consequently she is feeding very poorly and will not sleep during the day. She falls asleep and gets woken up by pain.My dilemmas:1)i am not sure she has reflux now! she is not better or different since the dietary changes and meds. Now i read that for MPI improvement can take weeks<…………..I want to keep breastfeeding but am thinking of forcing her to formula feed to eliminate leftover protein quicker2) her feeding aversion is the same, she passes gas when she feeds so its a tug of war.3)I dont want to keep pumping her full of p`revacid if reflux is not the culprit but rather colic or food sensitivity.I am so lost, desperate, my husband has been on deployment for 7 months and is coming home soon, i have a demanding two year old boy and on top of that 4 weeks after i delivered, i had tobe rushed to the er because my stupid OB left a huge piece of placenta in me AFTER having a d/cGOING NUTS!!! All of the symptoms your are describing (gassiness, colic/crying in pain) could be signs of a milk protein allergy. How long has it been since you cut dairy out of your diet? As you mentioned it can take 2 weeks for it to be gone from your system and then two addtl weeks til it is totally gone from hers too. You may also want to cut out soy since many MPI babies are allergic to that as well. If you are desperate to see an improvement, then it is an option to give an elemental formula (as you mentioned)) and keep pumping in the meantime until all of the proteins are gone from your system. I would do what you are comfortable with, and if you do want to try an elemental PM me and I can help you get some Neocate samples. Do you family/friends around that can help?
July 14, 2010 at 9:01 pm #66703hellbenntKeymasterok I want to tell you that you DO NOT HAVE to try elemental formula in order to clear out the proteins from your baby. it can take two weeks. that is ALL. it’s a short time on the planet, you can do it
seriously. you are NOT harming your baby. keep breastfeeding and keep trying to figure this out.
you say you’re confused. it IS confusing! I want to let you know that it CAN be reflux AND mspi – the mspi can exacerbate or even CAUSE the reflux. So, you address the reflux (thus the medicine) as you work on finding out if the cause of the reflux is diet related and/or if diet (proteins in your diet) is affecting the reflux.first of all the amount of prevacid and the FORM of prevacid most likely isn’t doing ANYTHING so it really is like you’re not giving any medicine at the moment (if it’s what you posted, ‘only’ 5mgs a day and in a compound made by the pharmacy)
I would work on MEDS and diet and then you can back off the meds if you want/need.
I would start w/ PROBIOTICS. even if it is ‘colic’ (which I don’t like the word at all!) even doctors say to use probiotics for colic! read here, it’s a great article and page 2 tells you what probiotics to use
“Colic Solved” article: http://wondertime.go.com/learning/article/interview-colic-expert.htmlthere is SO MUCH information I have to help you, i don’t want to overwhelm you! but in case you’re wondering how I know that your prevacid most likely isn’t doing jack (excuse me, I’m mad at your situation and your doctors!) is because of here:

this link is from the U of Missouri where they are at the FOREFRONT of research in this area…hang in there!
you can do this!July 16, 2010 at 7:00 am #66718AnonymousInactiveHi there, sorry you’re having such a hard time. I would try to stick it out with bf if you can. I ended up going down the formula route because the feeding aversion was impossible that she wouldn’t feed at all, and always wished that I’d stuck with it, because it’s so much better for them, especially a reflux baby. So Laura is such a great source of support re: BF a refluxer and she’ll help out if you ask. I did want to tell you that my experience with compounded PPIs is that they’re essentially useless… sorry I am biased, as I had a terrible experience. They are rarely made corectly, though do seem to work okay for tube fed babies, maybe because it goes directly to the stomach, I’m not sure. But had I gotten the meds sorted out earlier, I could have avoided a feeding aversion. I would personally try buffer babies, and get a higher dose if possible. Chekc out the the marci-kids website that Laura linked above. If the dose is too low, especially in a compound, it won’t do anything, like being on NO meds. Good luck.
