My son was MSPI and when we first started Neocate, he really refused the bottle and I was convinced that it was the taste. He went from being breastfed for 4+ months straight to Neocate b/c no one told me to wean slowly. The doctor tried to convince me that it certainly couldn’t have been the taste, his stomach was just small from not taking appropriate amounts for so long. Long story short, I got so fed up with trying to force him to take the Neocate.
My mother in law mentioned that she had to be given goats milk as a baby and my dad was also not able to take cows milk as a child. So, I just got the Meyenburg brand one day and added it to the Neocate and the first bottle he sucked down 5 oz like he was starving. He hadn’t taken more than 1-2oz per feeding before that time. I used 30%-40% goats milk and 60-70% Neocate– I would make about 24 oz per day and store it in a container b/c it was difficult to measure out otherwise. My doctor had a fit at first b/c he said goats milk did not have the fats that the brain needed to grow. He didn’t want me to do more than 30% goat milk. I watched him closely for the first 2-3 weeks and every cry or wimper, I thought oh this is a reaction to the milk, but we were successful and he was weaned to whole milk at around 14 months.
I know it’s not for everyone, and peds usually don’t recommend it, but I was desperate.
