HI All,
Dagney had her GI follow-up today at the original specialist she saw in December, at 3 1/2 months. She is…drumroll, please…18.2 pounds and 26.5 inches long! That’s 90-95th percentile for weight and 97th for height!! The reflux and cut-back eating from teething and the stomach bug has NOT affected her growth! She wants us to start feeding her cereal on a spoon, which I had planned on doing tomorrow anyway so my husband could tape it, then after a couple of days start on foods, and do 1 new food/week. (We already know she can tollerate the rice cereal well, so we don’t have to wait the whole week to move on to sweet potatoes or carrots…)
I confessed to the specialist, however that she is NOT on 22.5 mg/day of PRevacid (what she prescribed), but is on 30mg/day (which we got our pediatrician to prescribe). She said several times that that’s a really high dose, and said once she finishes cutting this 2nd tooth, in about 1 month, she wants us to get rid of 1 dose completely. I didn’t really reply yes or no, but don’t really plan on doing it either. We don’t have to go back to the GI for another 3 months, so I was going to maybe cut back from 10mg 3x/day to 7.5 mg 3x/day, if I think at that point that it would be ok for Dagney.
I DID, however, show her the Marci-kids information, and she did note that according to that, Dagney’s on the right dosage now (which for her weight & age would be 10-12 mg 3x/day), and she had read a paper about how infants metabolize the meds faster. She actually asked to keep the printouts and said she would check out the website! So maybe I’m helping to convert her!
She also said that Dagney will stay on the Neocate until 1 year, then we’d trial a food that had some dairy in it. If she did ok with it, then we’d slowly mix milk into the neocate until she’s switched over completely
For the time being, I’m not changing anything…we have an appointment with another specialist on Monday, I was going to feel her out to see how she felt about it, then pick the one I like better and continue with that one. I really like the current one, but don’t feel right lying to her about the dosage or disregarding her medical advice, because if something does go wrong, then I really have no leg to stand on with her!

Totally understand where you are with this one. Myabe give her a call in a couple of days…ask her if she’s had a chance to read the marci-kids stuff and would she agree then it is OK to give the 30mg since it is doing so well (or put it in a fax with lots of thanks…..ala Laura’s great advice on how to do this). But at the end of the day if Dagney is doing well on the dosage…I’d stick with it myself…but thats just a personal opinion (from someone who has no guilt…I’m only an expert in worry you seeeeeeeeee)

If you want to stick with her you could always tell her down the road that you tried a lower dose and it didn’t work so you stayed with the marci-kid’s dose. You could also say that she herself said it was the right dose according to marci-kids.
After she finishes cutting this tooth, she’ll be cutting another tooth…so you could say you kept her on the higher dose for that reason.
So, if you’re not happy with the specialist that you see on Monday, you may be able to work it out with the current one.
I’m glad to hear Dagney is doing so well.

I love his little thunder thighs. It has been nice not having to worry about him wasting away through all this, and unbelievable to me that he is big when he spits up so much. My daughter’s reflux was mostly silent, but she was so skinny. I obsessed over every little ounce, so I’m glad I don’t have to do that again!
